Family Dinner Hack with Honestbee and Buffalo Swing Cafe, Maybunga

As a working mom, one of the regular challenges I face is trying to fit in all my errands and tasks during the weekend. Last Saturday was particularly hectic: I had errands elsewhere and I didn’t know if I will be able to finish them in time to come home and prepare an appetizing dinner for me and the kids.

Fortunately, Honestbee has recently expanded its services to food delivery and among its partner merchants is Buffalo Swing Cafe.

This resto is situated in the Maybunga area, quite some distance from my home. I never heard of it before as I don’t usually explore the area for dining options.

Already anticipating how busy my day was going to be, I already booked my orders the night before using the Honestbee app. I ordered the following:

  • 1 order of American BBQ wings (Php175 – 5 pieces)
  • 2 orders of Butter Parmesan Wings (Php175 – 5 pieces)
  • 1 order of Macaroni and Cheese (Php170)
  • 1 All-Cheese Pizza (Php345)

I chose 2 flavors of wings so that the kiddos and I will have some choice in our viands. The Mac ‘n Cheese is a special request from my daughter #ExhibitA, while the pizza is a treat for my little boy who is, by the way, is a self-confessed pizza monster, so I’m hopeful that the pizza order will be a hit with him.

The entire bill amounted to a little over Php1,000 but since I applied the Php500 reward I received for referring a friend of mine to Honestbee, my actual payable amount is Php569.

I was still stuck in traffic by the time my orders arrived. Fortunately, #ExhibitA paid for the delivery while I was gone.

By the time I got home, dinner was already laid out at the table, ready to be eaten.

Not surprisingly, the little boy loved the All Cheese Pizza. It arrived still warm with the brick oven baked crust still crisp and the cheese toppings rich and creamy. My little pizza monster was able to polish off 3 slices.

The Mac ‘N Cheese, on the hand, was a hit with #ExhibitA. We found the noodles firm and the sauce really cheesy, with bits of bacon to add a meatier flavor to the dish.

We actually loved the Butter Parmesan Wings. It had a new kind of flavor that is a departure from the usual spicy buffalo wings. The American BBQ Wings wasn’t bad either. It was quite close to the barbecue sauce flavoring we’ve come to expect and had some zesty aftertaste which counters some of the umay factor.

Both sets of buffalo wings arrived still warm and had tender and juicy meat, which was very much appreciated by the kids and myself who all made short work of the meal.

I’m glad that with Honestbee there’s now a convenient way for me to have food delivered at home, with various options other than the big fast food chains. It’s become a life hack for busy working moms like me who want to give their kids a dining treat without having to spend all day in the kitchen, nor having to forego other important activities.

If you’re in an area where Buffalo Swing Cafe delivers via Honestbee, I would recommend ordering from it. Sign up for Honestbee using this referral link and get Php500 off for a minimum spend of Php2,500.  You can download the Honestbee app on iTunes or Google Play.

Six indispensable mobile apps for the busy working mom

If there’s one thing that we working moms oftentimes lack, it’s time.  Given our fast-paced lives and the demands of work, family and (gasp!) other obligations, we usually find ourselves pressed for time, looking for a few minutes here and there to squeeze in some errands or to just enjoy some moments to ourselves.

Fortunately, we have our greatest ally right in our pockets.  More than just our means to contact our family or to touch base with old friends through social media, our smartphones can and do allow us to do so much with what little time or space we have.  All we need is to have the right apps for the job.

Banking Apps

Most banks already have their own mobile apps that allow users to check their bank account balances and transaction histories, make fund transfers and even pay bills online.  Imagine not having to line up at the bank or at bayad centers just to make sure the bills are paid.

I helped my new college girl get her own account at the bank that I also have an account in.  Now, I usually just transfer money to her account as her allowance.  This frees me up from having to make sure that I always have cash on my wallet for her allowance and other household expenses.

This app turns our phones into a scanner which allows us to keep copies of important documents with us at all times. We can even use the app to send PDF copies of the scanned documents via email.

I recently used this feature to avail of the birthday promo at Ramen Nagi.  Since we didn’t have a hardcopy of my daughter’s valid ID, I asked the restaurant manager if I could just email her the digital copy I have on CamScanner and she agreed.  It was quite lucky that I kept the scanned copy of her passport on my phone.

Some moms may consider grocery shopping as a form of retail therapy, but for me, it’s a tedious chore.  Just to ensure that our pantry is stocked with all the food and supplies my family needs, I would have to drive to the supermarket, find a place to park (I hate this part), walk around looking for the items I need, only to line up at the checkout lane and lug my groceries back to my car.

Honestbee eliminates all those hassles by enabling me to order my groceries online right on the app which a well-trained shopper bee will get from the nearest grocery store and a delivery bee will deliver to my house.  This gives me additional two or three hours every weekend that I can use to catch up on my reading, get some beauty sleep or spend time at home with the kids.

For moms like me who will appreciate the convenience that Honestbee brings, here’s another perk: sign up for Honestbee using this referral link and get Php500 off your grocery bill.

Plus, Honestbee now delivers food from nearby restaurants. If you don’t feel like cooking, you can just order via the app and a sumptuous meal will be delivered right on your doorstep.

Speaking of food, sometimes you just want to enjoy some good food (that you didn’t have to cook yourself!) or try a new restaurant but you don’t want to overspend. With Eatigo, you can book a table at the featured restaurants and even enjoy up to 50% off on your food bill.

The discounts I’m able to avail of via Eatigo have helped me discover new places to eat and enjoy with friends and family.  Register using this link and get a bonus of Php150 worth of rewards.

Amazon Kindle App

Being a book lover, I used to have shelves and shelves of books.  However, Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) struck and I was forced to leave my beloved tomes behind to be swallowed up by the floodwaters.  For a few months after that disaster, I used to get teary-eyed whenever I find myself near a bookstore.

Fortunately, popularized ebooks and published the Kindle app which allows users to view their ebooks via their mobile devices.  It even allows users to convert their personal documents and books in PDF formats into files that can be read by Kindle.

Now, I carry my entire library with me wherever I go, and when I feel the need to read to relax, I just take out my phone and start reading.

SKY on Demand

There are times when you wish you just can take you TV anywhere with you such as when you’re still on the road and the show you’re following is already airing, or during long road trips and the kids need a distraction from the wait (and you need a break from the constant follow ups of “Are we there yet?”).

With SKY On Demand, you can watch SKYcable channels using any mobile device and any internet provider. Just download the app and register your SKYcable account number. You will be able to view all the channels in your SKYcable plan or any pay-per-view shows you are subscribed to that are available on SKY on Demand.

This app was a God-send to me when my husband and I had to pick up my daughter from her Community Development class on the Sunday when the Pacquiao vs Matthysse bout was going on. I was able to watch the bout while waiting in the car and later while eating lunch in our favorite Korean restaurant. If it weren’t for SKY On Demand, I would have missed the historic moment when Manny Pacquiao scored his first knockout victory in nine years.

Life for us working moms may be hectic and hard but with a little know-how and the help of our trusty smartphones, it can be made easier and more enjoyable for us and our loved ones.

What apps couldn’t you live without?

Disclosure: I work for SKY and part of my job is promoting its products and services, especially the content it provides to its subscribers. I consider being able to share my love for TV shows and movies and the experience of watching and talking about them with like-minded people some of the biggest perks of my job.

Five Things I Love About Honestbee

Being a homebody (and an introvert to boot), I’m sometimes loathe to leave the house to do some grocery shopping, whether after a tiring workday or during the weekends when I feel like I have earned my respite.

When an officemate clued me in on Honestbee, I was thrilled at the idea. Imagine doing your grocery shopping using your computer or any mobile device, and having your goods delivered right to your doorstep!

Honestbee is an online concierge and delivery service. It keeps a pool of trained concierge shoppers (called shopper bees) who make the trip to stores near your area, pick out the freshest produce or the items specified in your order, then forwards it to one of the delivery bees so that your orders reach you in the time you specified. It’s basically like having a personal shopper for groceries!

Having logged nine grocery orders from its partner store Robinsons Supermarket for the past three months, I feel that I have enough experience with the service to list down exactly why I love it:

  • The app is so easy to use. I mainly use the Honestbee mobile app as I try not to open my laptop at home (it’s my way of keeping my work life and home life separate). I simply downloaded the app on my phone and proceeded to use it. I’ve seen some reviews provide step-by-step instructions on how to use the service but, honestly, I don’t think those are necessary. Practically anyone who knows how to use a smartphone can navigate her way around the Honestbee app.
  • No more handwritten grocery lists. Planning the trip to the grocery store used to be such a complex production number for me. I had to plan the weekly food menu, check various storage spaces for items we are running low on, ask my family members what they need, list down all the items on a piece of paper that I hopefully won’t forget when I leave for the grocery store, yada yada yada… With Honestbee, I can just place my orders via the app as I’m checking the ref, or conferring with yaya, etc.
  • I don’t have to leave the house. Did I mention I’m a homebody? I’m the kind of person who can be perfectly content hanging around the house. The time I used to carve out for grocery shopping is time I now use to play with my kids, catch up on my reading or my favorite TV shows, try out new recipes or crafts, and, of course, write this blog! Presented with with option to pay via cash or credit card, I chose credit card, eliminating the mad dash to the ATM to pay for my purchases. Plus, with the rising gas prices and the stress of having to find parking in malls and supermarkets, I’m happy as a clam to stay right at home.
  • I get additional savings from promos and rewards. Since I shop for an average-sized household, I’m usually able to unlock the FREE DELIVERY reward which eliminates the flat Php45 delivery fee from the final bill. From time to time, Honestbee would also email me promo codes that shave off as high as Php500 for a minimum order of Php2,500. I just have to indicate the promo codes during checkout for the discounts to apply.
  • Its shopper and delivery bees are friendly and helpful. My usual shopper bee, Odessa, would text me with suggested alternatives if some of the items I ordered are out of stock. One of my delivery bees, Jeffrey, ventured out in the scorching heat of the midday sun just to delivery my groceries by 12noon. I’m happy that such hardworking and accommodating people are able to earn some extra cash during their spare time through their engagement with Honestbee.

Honestbee has extended its services beyond groceries to include food delivery. Some of the places I’ve already eaten at, including Tittos and Don Bao in Kapitolyo and Pi Breakfast & Pies in The Grove, now deliver through Honestbee. So just picture yourself ordering from your favorite resto using your phone everytime you get a craving.
