The Jelly List: Desserts for delivery that will sate your sweet cravings

How’s your sweet tooth these days, foodies?

The quarantine has hampered our ability to go out for our sweet fix. Thanks to the internet, however, we can easily find dessert sellers, ready to supply us with goodies so we won’t have to leave home to sate our sweet cravings.

If you’ve been missing your favorite dessert stops during your life before the pandemic, it may be high time to get tapping on your phone and have your sweet cravings delivered to your doorstep.

Being a sweet tooth myself (and egged on by my equally sweet fanatic kids), I decided to give some of these sweets a try over the past few months. Others have been sent by friends and relatives to celebrate special occasions. Whatever the reason, being treated to new desserts is always a good idea.

Check out my picks and see if they can become your favorites too!

Triple Cheese Donuts from Lola Nena’s

The social media star for many months into the quarantine is Lola Nena’s Triple Cheese Donuts. It’s the offshoot of the old-fashioned donuts inspired by the sugary bicho-bicho but now overloaded with cheese.

These are best served when heated so that the cheese gets all melty and yummy!

Flavored Ensaymada from Bread for EveryJuan

Ensaymadas are another childhood favorite of mine. I prefer these pastries to be fluffy and topped with lots of sugar and cheese for that sweet-and-salty dynamic.

Bread for EveryJuan, however, ups the ante on my favorite kind of ensaymada with the addition of Ube and Caramel flavors.

Signature Moist Chocolate from Amante’s Decadent Moist Cakes

The gold standard for any chocolate cake is the moistness (read: non-dryness) of its chocolate cake base. (Speaking as a home baker myself, it’s actually hard to achieve!)

That’s why it’s best to let the pros handle it, like Amante’s Decadent Moist Cakes. It’s Signature Moist Cake has that moist cake base, and a decadent chocolate frosting topped with chocolate chips. It is not too sweet, so you can savor more of its richchocolate goodness.

5 ways Cafe Mary Grace’s ensaymada solves your holiday gifting dilemma

Ooh yes! We’re in the BER months now and, for many, the countdown to Christmas has begun.

And you know what we’re all excited for during the holidays, right?

Gifts, course!

Showering our loved ones with presents is one of the most rewarding feelings.

Cafe Mary Grace, SM East Ortigas

However, given the new situations we are faced with due to the still raging pandemic and different phases of community quarantine it necessitates, we may have to adjust our holiday gift-giving strategy.

Cafe Mary Grace, SM East Ortigas

So let me present the case for Cafe Mary Grace’s Ensaymadas as your go-to holiday present for your nears-and-dears.

1. Ensaymadas are rich in history.

Did you know that the origin ensaymadas can be traced all the way back to the 17th century in the Balearic Islands in Mallorca, Spain?

During celebrations and festivities, Mallorcan bakers would combine strong flour, water, sugar, eggs, mother dough and a kind of reduced pork lard called saim, from which the resulting pastry, the ensaimada de Mallorca, gets its name.

The ensaymada found its may to the Philippines during the Spanish colonization and is now among the most common delicacies in the country, found in most neighborhood bakeshops. Modifications made from the Mallorcan original include the use of butter instead of lard, as well as the addition of sugar and grated cheese.

It has even become part of our Christmas tradition to enjoy these pastries together with a cup of hot tsokolate made with local tableya.

2. They’re also steeped in good childhood memories.

Most of us can recall those afternoons we spent enjoying an ensaymada roll or two – still warm and fresh from the neighborhood bakery – for merienda after playtime with our childhood pals, right?

3. Cafe Mary Grace’s Ensaymadas is an upgrade of our childhood ensaymada.

Cafe Mary Grace made its name from the homemade goodness of its cakes and baked goods. Its ensaymadas are no different.

Made with 100% real butter and eggs as well as topped with grated Edam cheese, these soft and fluffy pastries have that combination of sweet and salty flavors we Pinoys so adore with a premium and delicate mouthfeel.

4. They already come beautifully packaged.

For just Php658, you can already get a pretty box of six ensaymadas, ready for gifting.

The ensaymada pieces are also individually wrapped so it’s no hassle to give them out to guests as desserts during small gatherings or save a few pieces for later munching.

Boxes of eight pieces and twelve pieces are also available at Php756 and Php1,098, respectively.

5. They’re easy to get.

Given all the restrictions on retail operations and protocols on social distancing, Cafe Mary Grace has made it easy for its customers to get their offerings by making them available online so there’s no need to line up to get a hold of them.

Orders may be coursed through Cafe Mary Grace’s website for pickup or via GrabFood for delivery.

These pastries will arrive chilled as they were taken fresh from the chiller. Before serving, only thaw out the number of pieces you want to eat. Do this by placing an ensaymada in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth, and microwave for ten seconds on the lowest heat settings to restore its original softness.

Recovery Food at Pi Breakfast & Pies, Ugong

I admit, there are times when I’m in no mood to worry about breakfast, especially when my (gasp!) three-in-one coffee is already waiting for me at the dining table (courtesy of my ever-loyal yaya, of course).

I keep hearing that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day… yada, yada, yada…” but we shouldn’t eat breakfast for its own sake.  Breakfast should be a gastronomic pleasure too.  (That way, more people will take eating breakfast to heart!)

After my first attempt to return to running for fitness (or to be more honest, walking around the track just to burn off some calories), I, together with Hubby who is more serious about running than I am, decided to stop over at Pi Breakfast & Pies at the Rockwell Grove in Ugong.  For our breakfast – slash – recovery food, we ordered:

  • Caramelized Spam (Php265).  The classic spamsilog is given a more premium twist.  The hefty cubes of spam, tossed in the pan until they achieved a nice caramelization, were accented by garlic fried rice, kimchi, pesto, a five-minute egg, scallions and sesame seeds.
  • Queso de Bola Ensaymada (Php55).  And I used to think those big red balls of cheese are only good for the Christmas season!  The sharp saltiness of the cheese has a nice interplay with the sweetness of the bread.  I would prefer it to be a bit puffier and have a smoother texture, though.
  • Hot Chocolate (Php85).  I’m not sure what I expected but I would have thought that the resto could have added a new twist to this drink to make it special, maybe a drop of peppermint or some chocolate shavings?

All these said, I wouldn’t mind returning to Pi Breakfast & Pies to sample their other All-Day Breakfast Options such as the Eggs Benny (Php275) and the Beef Brisket Corned Beef (Php275).

This branch of Pi Breakfast & Pies is located at The Grove By Rockwell, E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue, Ugong, Pasig City, open from 7am to 10pm everyday (Tel: +63 915 2583314).  Its other branch is located at 39 Malingap Street, Teachers Village, Quezon City, open from 6am to 10pm everyday (Tel: +63 2 9312337 or +63 2 4411773).
