Discover great food by great cooks at Meals.ph

With our busy schedules and so many responsibilities, preparing something good for a family meal or a gathering can be quite a challenge. Don’t you sometimes wish that you could just have someone to do all the marinating, basting, slow-cooking, grilling and baking for you?  This will leave you so much time to do all the other stuff you need to do but still assures you and your near-and-dears a great meal.

Food delivery services recently started becoming popular as it connects us busy working moms to restaurants from which we can order food to be delivered to our homes.

But sometimes, we crave for food that only good artisanal home cooks can give.

Enter Meals.ph.

Meals.ph is the brainchild of young entrepreneur Macky Sy who envisioned creating a platform that helps people find great home-cooked meals near us as well as help home cooks earn a little extra by selling their meals online.

Through the website, you can navigate the tabs to find vendors for specialty meals (according to cuisine), meal plans (with options for per-day and per-week orders), catering for events (party trays), desserts, ready-to-cook/eat meals, as well as sauces, side dishes and snacks.  You can also just use the search bar to find a specific dish you’re looking for.

When you’ve selected your dish, click “Order” to initiate the order process, wait for the vendor to acknowledge, then settle with the vendor regarding the terms for payment and fulfillment of your order.

Note, though, that these terms vary from vendor to vendor, and the availability of dishes varies from area to area.

If you find yourself too loaded with tasks and would like to leave the cooking to someone else, why not check out some of Meals.ph’s vendor partners.  Especially with the holidays coming, get yourself to enjoying more time relaxing and having fun with family and friends, and maybe help support some of these budding entrepreneurs as well.

Kitycups

The person behind Kitycups is part-time accountant/financial advisor Kristine Rodriguez.  She started by baking simple cookies and eventually grew a business out of her hobby.  Her venture specializes in cakes and sweets and she hopes to establish a factory for her food business someday.

On a side note, I recently treated myself and the kids to one of her Dreamcake Chocolattas and we loved it!  Watch out for it among my future posts. 🙂

Nikita’s Pastries

Niki Alfaro, on the other hand, works full-time on her business, Nikita’s Pastries, while taking care of her mom who has a heart condition. This home baker decided to put up a home-based business that will give her the time and flexibility to be available to her parents while providing her with an independent income. She dreams of one day opening her own restaurant or bringing her business with her to the US. Check out her cheesecake cups; those are her specialty.

FoodAllMighty

When Cristina Bustos is not at her job, working as a supervisor in a BPO company, she occupies her time with cooking but she hopes to go full-time on her side business someday. Her FoodAllMighty party trays, particularly the baked lasagna, are a boon to those who are assigned to bring viands for the office potluck or the clan get-together.

Shoreline Barbecue

Men seem to have a special relationship with grilling and artist, entrepreneur and doggy daddy John Muyargas revels in this. Having worked his way up from waiter to chef in an Italian-American resto in Dallas, Texas, he brings Tex-Mex flavors to his local customers through his Shoreline Barbecue trays. His immediate plans involve steadily growing his business and sharing the love.

Migu Migu

Carlos Cabigao pulled himself up from the multiple challenges that his family encountered and set out building a business. He first started with baking until a friend suggested he try making spreads using flavored butter. His White Truffle Butter is a definite must-try.

With so many great cooks ready and willing to prepare gorgeous and delightful food for us, and with a service like Meals.ph that connects us to the best among them, it just make sense to free ourselves from the stress of holiday cooking.

Check them out at Meals.ph!

You’ll be also glad to know that Meals.ph already has a mobile app.  Download it from the App Store or Google Play, check it out, and tell Macky what you think. 🙂

Have an Instant Party at Alex III, Tomas Morato

With the approaching holidays comes the much-awaited season of parties and get-togethers.  Pinoys, in particular, love to celebrate with food, lots and lots of it.  I recall my mom and titas slaving away in the kitchen, preparing their signature dishes for our family gatherings.

While I’m passionate about food, I’m not too keen on stressing myself out in the kitchen. Fortunately, thanks to a Foodie Meet-up held at Alex III’s Tomas Morato branch, I, together with my fellow foodies, discovered that I can treat my loved ones out to a feast of classic Filipino favorites, thanks to its Instant Party Menu.

Alex III’s Instant Party Menu consist of two sets of dishes.  Both priced at Php2995, these feature home-grown Filipino party food enough for a group of five.  These are all prepared and cooked with the same love and tradition that goes all the way back to Aling Asiang (or Mrs. Engracia Reyes), the matriarch of the family behind the Aristrocrat restaurant of which Alex III is an offshoot, being a business started by one of Aling Asiang’s grandsons.

Set One

Alex III, Tomas Morato

This set includes:

  • Choice of 1 viand among Chicken Barbecue, Pork Barbecue, Barbecued Pork Belly and Whole Fried Chicken
  • Special Pancit Canton
  • Fresh Lumpiang Ubod or Lumpiang Shanghai
  • Kare-Kare
  • Crispy Pata
  • Steamed Rice

Set Two

This set includes:

  • Choice of 1 viand among Chicken Barbecue, Pork Barbecue, Barbecued Pork Belly and Whole Fried Chicken
  • Whole Fried Chicken
  • Whole Crispy Lapu-Lapu with Sweet and Sour Sauce
  • Camaron Rebosado
  • Special Pancit Canton
  • Shanghai Rice

Each set is served with garlic peanuts, a sushi sampler, your choice of soup (of which we sampled the Hototay and Sinigang na Salmon), bottomless iced tea and your choice of dessert (of which we sampled the Leche Flan and the Pandan Jellied Tapioca).

Both sets present diners with a combination of flavors that are dearly familiar, being dishes that were served during family reunions and fiestas when we were growing up.  They also serve as a way for working moms like me to reconnect our present-day celebrations with the warmth and traditions of our childhood: that despite the hectic schedules and fast-paced lifestyles, we have a way to get together with our loved ones to exchange old memories and make new ones, while enjoying good food and good company.

With Alex III’s Instant Party Menu, the tradition of fun family celebrations with good food is made even better.

Family Dinner Hack with Honestbee and Buffalo Swing Cafe, Maybunga

As a working mom, one of the regular challenges I face is trying to fit in all my errands and tasks during the weekend. Last Saturday was particularly hectic: I had errands elsewhere and I didn’t know if I will be able to finish them in time to come home and prepare an appetizing dinner for me and the kids.

Fortunately, Honestbee has recently expanded its services to food delivery and among its partner merchants is Buffalo Swing Cafe.

This resto is situated in the Maybunga area, quite some distance from my home. I never heard of it before as I don’t usually explore the area for dining options.

Already anticipating how busy my day was going to be, I already booked my orders the night before using the Honestbee app. I ordered the following:

  • 1 order of American BBQ wings (Php175 – 5 pieces)
  • 2 orders of Butter Parmesan Wings (Php175 – 5 pieces)
  • 1 order of Macaroni and Cheese (Php170)
  • 1 All-Cheese Pizza (Php345)

I chose 2 flavors of wings so that the kiddos and I will have some choice in our viands. The Mac ‘n Cheese is a special request from my daughter #ExhibitA, while the pizza is a treat for my little boy who is, by the way, is a self-confessed pizza monster, so I’m hopeful that the pizza order will be a hit with him.

The entire bill amounted to a little over Php1,000 but since I applied the Php500 reward I received for referring a friend of mine to Honestbee, my actual payable amount is Php569.

I was still stuck in traffic by the time my orders arrived. Fortunately, #ExhibitA paid for the delivery while I was gone.

By the time I got home, dinner was already laid out at the table, ready to be eaten.

Buffalo Swing, Maybunga

Not surprisingly, the little boy loved the All Cheese Pizza. It arrived still warm with the brick oven baked crust still crisp and the cheese toppings rich and creamy. My little pizza monster was able to polish off 3 slices.

The Mac ‘N Cheese, on the hand, was a hit with #ExhibitA. We found the noodles firm and the sauce really cheesy, with bits of bacon to add a meatier flavor to the dish.

Buffalo Swing, Maybunga

We actually loved the Butter Parmesan Wings. It had a new kind of flavor that is a departure from the usual spicy buffalo wings. The American BBQ Wings wasn’t bad either. It was quite close to the barbecue sauce flavoring we’ve come to expect and had some zesty aftertaste which counters some of the umay factor.

Both sets of buffalo wings arrived still warm and had tender and juicy meat, which was very much appreciated by the kids and myself who all made short work of the meal.

I’m glad that with Honestbee there’s now a convenient way for me to have food delivered at home, with various options other than the big fast food chains. It’s become a life hack for busy working moms like me who want to give their kids a dining treat without having to spend all day in the kitchen, nor having to forego other important activities.

If you’re in an area where Buffalo Swing Cafe delivers via Honestbee, I would recommend ordering from it. Sign up for Honestbee using this referral link and get Php500 off for a minimum spend of Php2,500.  You can download the Honestbee app on iTunes or Google Play.

Five Things I Love About Honestbee

Being a homebody (and an introvert to boot), I’m sometimes loathe to leave the house to do some grocery shopping, whether after a tiring workday or during the weekends when I feel like I have earned my respite.

When an officemate clued me in on Honestbee, I was thrilled at the idea. Imagine doing your grocery shopping using your computer or any mobile device, and having your goods delivered right to your doorstep!

Honestbee is an online concierge and delivery service. It keeps a pool of trained concierge shoppers (called shopper bees) who make the trip to stores near your area, pick out the freshest produce or the items specified in your order, then forwards it to one of the delivery bees so that your orders reach you in the time you specified. It’s basically like having a personal shopper for groceries!

Having logged nine grocery orders from its partner store Robinsons Supermarket for the past three months, I feel that I have enough experience with the service to list down exactly why I love it:

  • The app is so easy to use. I mainly use the Honestbee mobile app as I try not to open my laptop at home (it’s my way of keeping my work life and home life separate). I simply downloaded the app on my phone and proceeded to use it. I’ve seen some reviews provide step-by-step instructions on how to use the service but, honestly, I don’t think those are necessary. Practically anyone who knows how to use a smartphone can navigate her way around the Honestbee app.
  • No more handwritten grocery lists. Planning the trip to the grocery store used to be such a complex production number for me. I had to plan the weekly food menu, check various storage spaces for items we are running low on, ask my family members what they need, list down all the items on a piece of paper that I hopefully won’t forget when I leave for the grocery store, yada yada yada… With Honestbee, I can just place my orders via the app as I’m checking the ref, or conferring with yaya, etc.
  • I don’t have to leave the house. Did I mention I’m a homebody? I’m the kind of person who can be perfectly content hanging around the house. The time I used to carve out for grocery shopping is time I now use to play with my kids, catch up on my reading or my favorite TV shows, try out new recipes or crafts, and, of course, write this blog! Presented with with option to pay via cash or credit card, I chose credit card, eliminating the mad dash to the ATM to pay for my purchases. Plus, with the rising gas prices and the stress of having to find parking in malls and supermarkets, I’m happy as a clam to stay right at home.
  • I get additional savings from promos and rewards. Since I shop for an average-sized household, I’m usually able to unlock the FREE DELIVERY reward which eliminates the flat Php45 delivery fee from the final bill. From time to time, Honestbee would also email me promo codes that shave off as high as Php500 for a minimum order of Php2,500. I just have to indicate the promo codes during checkout for the discounts to apply.
  • Its shopper and delivery bees are friendly and helpful. My usual shopper bee, Odessa, would text me with suggested alternatives if some of the items I ordered are out of stock. One of my delivery bees, Jeffrey, ventured out in the scorching heat of the midday sun just to delivery my groceries by 12noon. I’m happy that such hardworking and accommodating people are able to earn some extra cash during their spare time through their engagement with Honestbee.

Honestbee has extended its services beyond groceries to include food delivery. Some of the places I’ve already eaten at, including Tittos and Don Bao in Kapitolyo and Pi Breakfast & Pies in The Grove, now deliver through Honestbee. So just picture yourself ordering from your favorite resto using your phone everytime you get a craving.
