Hokkaido Oysters

Salmon HQ PR

Imagine eating oysters that are as big as the palm of your hands? AWESOME right? This is what Hokkaido Oysters are all about.

Oysters are a rich source of vitamin D, copper, zinc, and manganese. These micronutrients, in combination with calcium, are thought to be key to slowing or even preventing bone loss in older women due to osteoporosis. Additionally, dietary sources of these minerals are thought to be more effective than supplements. Salmon HQ’s Hokkaido Oysters will definitely have you slurping this awesome goodness with the biggest smile on your face.

Otoro and Chutoro

Salmon HQ PR

This is the most desirable part from the inside of the fish’s belly. Because it is the fattiest part of the fish, it practically melts in your mouth. It also lends sashimi a sweeter taste. Because of its rich and highly sought-after nature, otoro can be a bit more expensive than other parts of the fish – but certainly worth every penny.

Chutoro straddles both types of tuna and so it provides both a meaty and a fatty texture for a real celebration in your mouth. Don’t expect to eat a lot of chutoro when enjoying tuna – it makes up such a small amount of the fish that it takes a whole fish to make one chutoro sashimi! This is why it’s a must have!

Sushi Bake or Baked Sushi

Salmon HQ PR

A sushi bake is basically a deconstructed sushi roll, with all the elements you love: tangy sushi rice, seasoned crab filling, and spicy mayo to top it off. Salmon HQ makes it better by playing around and adding more to its offering so you’re constantly surprised with the taste. Some of the flavors you need to try are the Crunchy California Maki, Takoyaki, and their ultimate best-seller, the Aburi Scallops Salmon Ebi.

Premium Salmon Cake

Salmon HQ PR

Salmon is the only dish that you can eat raw and it’ll be so good you’ll want more. The good thing is that it is good for your body and for your heart. One of the top health benefits of eating salmon, either raw or cooked, is that it is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help the body in several ways, including: Improved brain function. Decreased risk of cardiovascular problems, like heart attack and heart arrhythmia.

So, what are you waiting for? Order yours now via their Salmon HQ Facebook Page or better yet, book them for your next event, Zoom meeting, or celebration. Everyone will definitely love you if you bring food from Salmon HQ.

While many of our old dining haunts have (thankfully!) re-opened for business, they are doing so at just thirty percent capacity for outdoor dining and ten percent capacity for indoor dining, catering only to customers who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

That leaves many of us members of the dining public still with little recourse for our foodie adventures but to have them at home.

Fortunately, great food is only a few phone taps away with these food shops!

SaladStop!

Veggies are front and center at Salad Stop!, a salad-centric shop that espouses “Eating Wide Awake.” Its salad creations are not only fresh, nutritious and flavorful, their ingredients are also sustainably sourced.

Yummy sushi galore from Salmon HQ

Since I belong to a family of Japanese food lovers, it’s hardly surprising that I would develop a liking for sushi.

Traditionally made with vinegared rice (sushi-meshi) combined with other ingredients (neta) such as (often raw) seafood and vegetables, sushi has become showcases for the sushi chef’s creativity and ingenuity.

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

During pre-pandemic times, we usually needed to venture all the way to our go-to Japanese restaurants to get a taste of our favorite sushi variants.

But with restrictions on movement and dining out within the metro limiting the choices available, I’m glad that innovative food entrepreneurs have ventured into sushi delivery such as the people behind Salmon HQ.

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

This New Manila, QC-based enterprise specialized in delivering fresh salmon sashimi right to the doorstep of Japanese food lovers.

It soon expanded its product offerings to include the latest food trends, incorporating its fresh seafood ingredients into delectable creations, well-suited for delivery.

The Sushi Bakes.

Sushi bakes are deconstructions of the maki (sushi rolls) where, instead of rolling the sushi rice and the sushi fillings and wrapping them in nori (dried seaweed) sheets, they are layered on a baking pan and cooked in an oven. Sushi bakes are enjoyed by scooping out some of the dish and folding them into small nori squares.

Salmon HQ

Similar to traditional maki, the sushi bake offers a lot of possibilities in incorporating tantalizing tastes and textures into the dish.

I was able to try out samplers of sushi bakes from Salmon HQ, which included:

The Crunchy California (a variant of the OG sushi bake with kani and mango) and Unagi Madness (with slivers of freshwater eel and generous sprinklings of roe).

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Aburi Salmon Scallops Ebi (torched slivers of salmon mixed with scallops and shrimp) and Softshell Crab and Ebi (wonderfully textured combination of shrimp and softshell crab).

Prices for the full trays of Salmon HQ’s sushi bakes start at Php500 (for small) and Php1,200 (for large).

The Pasta.

Who would have thought that a pasta dish can taste so distinctly Japanese? With the Seafood Wafu Pasta, you get spaghetti noodles tossed in a soy butter glaze with scallops, shrimp and salmon. It’s a perfect blend of hearty pasta goodness and the fresh flavors of the sea.

The Salmon Cake.

If you ever wondered what could possibly make a show-stopping cake for any celebration, well, here’s the answer.

Salmon HQ’s Premium Salmon Cake is a wondrous creation: pieces of fresh pink salmon sashimi are layered and interlaced to form a two-tier cake, with the bottom-tier hiding layers of kani (imitation crab meat), ebiko (shrimp eggs), seaweed salad and Japanese rice.

#LookToTheEast for delectable and affordable Sushi Bake

Easterners, we don’t have to get left behind when it comes to the latest quarantine food trend: the Sushi Bake.

YG Delectables

YG Delectables

Thanks to new online seller in the Rizal area, Y&G Delectables, we can satisfy our curiosity and craving for this trending food item easily and quite cheaply, too!

YG Delectables

YG Delectables

Despite having been written about as early as 2011, the sushi bake has re-emerged as the must-taste dish of the season. While its exact origins aren’t known, some have theorized that it may have been influenced by Hawaiian cuisine such as the poke bowls with cooked meat and the Spam Musubi.

Essentially, it is sushi deconstructed as a casserole: steamed rice forms the bottom layer which is then topped with the elements we normally expect from a sushi roll such as kani, ebiko and furikake. After baking the sushi casserole in the oven, spoonfuls are scooped out and placed in small nori squares, ready for eating.

YG Delectables

YG Delectables

While there are many interpretations of this dish being offered all over the metro, they tend to be quite pricy or too distant from us Easterners to find the cost of delivery to our homes practical.

Well that limitation ends now with Y&G Delectables’ Sushi Bake. This no-frills take on the dish is well-suited for those who like their kani baked sushi cheesy, strongly flavored with a little spicy kick due to the use of sriracha.

YG Delectables

YG Delectables

Cainta-based Y&G Delectables takes its name from the teenage twins Yel and Gel who decided to offer their Ate’s sushi bake in their area as a way to pass the time (and earn some money) while stuck at home. (And I’m all for youngsters learning the value of making a living early on.)

YG Delectables

Y&G Delectables’ sushi bake come in three tummy-filling sizes:

  • Solo with 1 free nori pack: Php250
  • Sharing with 2 free nori packs: Php350
  • Family (available upon request); Php550

So. Easterners, the next time you’re feeling peckish and looking for a trendy snack, or want to surprise your old folks with today’s hottest food trend, grab a tray of Y&G Delectables’ Sushi Bake and support a local business while you’re at it.

Sushi bake delivery from Meatsumo Premium, Panay

I admit: I’ve grown quite worried about how restaurants will fare in The New Normal.

Particularly vulnerable are the samgyupsal places wherein unlimited meats and other food items are served for table-top grilling by the diners. These places require groups of people to gather around the table as they grill their food.

One such place was Meatsumo Premium located in Panay Avenue in Quezon City. Located a few minutes’ ride away from my office, it was the perfect place to indulge my craving for all things samgyup. No wonder then, that I found myself dragging my more fellow samgyup lovers at work to this resto a few weeks after it opened.

Meatsumo Premium, Panay

What made Meatsumo Premium stand out from similar restos is Japanese dishes it also offers alongside its Korean fare. For just Php549 per person, we were able to enjoy eleven kinds of meat (including plain pork, pork galbi, regular and spicy pork yakiniku, pork gochujiang, plain beef, peppered beef, beef bulgogi, regular and spicy beef yakiniku and beef gochujiang) as well as twenty different side dishes (including my favorites such as cheese, kani salad, kimbap, California Maki and California Temaki).

Oh, such happy times…

But then, the enhanced community quarantine happened. I knew then that I had to bid adieu to Meatsumo.

That is, until it re-opened a few weeks ago, offering a “Create Your Own” Samgyupsal Set as well as its Japanese-Korean fusion dishes ala carte.

However, what drew my attention was its newest menu item: the Sushi Bake (Php480).

Meatsumo Premium, Panay

Meatsumo Premium, Panay

This trendy dish akin to a sushi casserole. The usual Japanese maki elements such as sushi rice, kani (crabstick), mango, zucchini, Japanese mayo and tobiko (fish roe) are there. With all these, you’ve got one scrumptious dish!

Meatsumo Premium, Panay

To eat, just scoop out a portion (mine tend to be overly large but I don’t care), place it in the nori strip provided, add a bit of finely chopped spring onions and tempura flakes for one tasty bite!

Meatsumo Premium, Panay

I ordered this for the fam’s lunch, along with Tempura (Php150) and Karaage (Php120), and all proved to be certified hits with kiddos!

Well, I’m glad to see that Meatsumo Premium was able to deftly pivot its business and innovate on its offerings. It sure looks poised to meet the challenges of The New Normal head on.
