CinemaWorld film fest features 4 award-winning films this November

CinemaWorld continues to bring quality movies to SKYcable viewers, this time putting the spotlight on four award-winning international films as it launches “Cinemaworld Film Festival: Crossroads” Sundays at 9pm this November showcasing youths prevailing over life’s adversities.

SKYcable subscribers can tune-in to the story of star-crossed lovers Rafael and Cristine in Romanian’s “Box“. Find out how far the 19-year old aspiring Gypsy boxer and the 34-year old married actress can prove that age and different worlds don’t matter when it comes to love.  It premiered last November 4 but will re-air on November 9, 8.20pm.

Awarded Best Screenplay Award at Sundance Film Festival 2013, “Wajma, An Afghan Love Story“, tells the tale of a young couple who kept their relationship in secret. After Wajma discovers her pregnancy and their relationship is exposed, her father will be tested as he tries to uphold their family’s honor and protect his daughter.  The movie premieres November 11.

The Israeli film, “Fill The Void“, which won Best Actress Award at Venice Film Festival 2012, and seven Ophir Awards, also known as the Israeli Oscars, revolves around Shira (Hadas Yaron), an 18-year old woman, who is urged to marry her brother-in-law after her sister unexpectedly dies and leaves behind her new-born baby. Catch its premiere on November 18.

Last on the line-up is Britain’s “Bypass“, a film nominated for Best Film for the Venice Horizons Award in Venice Film Festival back in 2014. A young man named Tim, played by George MacKay, is left with no choice but to look out for his younger sister Helen after the tragic death of their mother.

As he finds a job for their needs, he resorts to reselling stolen goods for profit. In the middle of his dilemmas, he finds support in his girlfriend Lily. See it as it premieres on November 27.

Last month, CinemaWorld treated film buffs to an exclusive screening of “Wajma, An Afghan Love Story” at the UP Town Center. The film festival was graced by the Sales and Marketing Director of CinemaWorld, Pearlyn Lee. “CinemaWorld aims to increase visibility of international films in communities where we operate and give local audiences a taste of a foreign country’s diversity, culture and creativity through an annual film festival,” said Lee.

CinemaWorld is available on SKYcable Plans HD1799 and HD1999 channel 184 in Metro Manila, San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna, and on HD channel 716 in Cebu and Davao. HBO brings Malaysian myth ‘TOYOL’ to scare viewers this Halloween weekend

The ghost of an unborn infant haunts HBO viewers on SKY as the Malaysian flick “Toyol” airs this Sunday (November 4), the fifth episode of the horror anthology series, “Folklore.”

A Member of Parliament (Bront Palarae) of a fishing town seeks the help of a mysterious woman (Nabila Huda) with shaman-like powers in order to save the town from its dire economic situation. After she miraculously fixes the problem, the two fall in love. But the woman hides a deep, dark secret that will threaten to destroy everything as she could unleash the “toyol” upon the world.

According to Malay folklore, the “toyol” manifests itself as a newborn baby, only with blood-red eyes and sharp teeth. It is summoned through black magic by its owner and does their bidding no matter how gruesome the wish is.

Will the local politician know the real motive of the shaman before it is too late?

HBO Asia’s first horror anthology, “Folklore,” is a series that draws on the local myths from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Following “Toyol” is the last installment, the Korean episode,“Mongdal.”

Episodes are helmed by different directors from various Asian countries, and are filmed in the local language of the country that the episode is based in.

Watch “Toyol” on November 4, 10PM on HBO Ch. 54 SD/Ch. 168 HD (For Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Lipa-Batangas) or on Ch. 402 SD/710 HD (For Bacolod, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Dumaguete, General Santos, Iloilo). Weakest Beast

WeakestBeast_E1A

Weakest Beast stars Yui Aragaki as Akira Shinkai and Ryuhei Matsuda as Kosei Nemoto in their fourth collaboration as an on-screen couple.  Written by Akiko Nogi, the show follows the story of Akira Shinkai who wants to be free to be herself and lose her perfect-girl image, and of the cynical, street-smart ladies’ man she meets, Kosei Nemoto. Guarded strangers to each other, they need to learn to let their feelings lead the way.

Matsuda, who is best known for his role of Japanese gangster in the sequel of The Raid, called Berandal, is expanding his acting portfolio by adding romance to his genres.  “This role is going to be fun and I am looking forward to it. It would be great if there were twists to the fabric of relationships between men and women. I hope to portray the role of Kosei Nemoto based on my intuitive feelings of the character; a character that will speak whatever that comes to his mind,” said Matsuda.

Aragaki, on the other hand, is excited to be working with Matsuda again after a long time.  “It has been 11 years since Matsuda and I last starred together in a movie; I am elated to work with him again and it is a treasured opportunity for me. Back then, I was still a high school kid. This time, I will do my best to showcase a different set of acting skills and not to be a burden to him,” said Aragaki.

4 Things I love about the New SKY On Demand Box

When I joined the company over a decade ago, SKY has just introduced digital cable TV. For almost all of its subscribers, cable TV means a coaxial cable is connected directly to one’s TV. Since the signal is analog, the TV reception is sometimes grainy and, compared to today, the channels available were limited.

Fast forward to today, and digital TV is the norm. It is now common to see set-top boxes attached to the TVs; these process the digital from the cable and produce clearer pictures on the screen. And because the channel capacity on the digital network has expanded, more channels and shows are available, some are even in high definition.

Coinciding with the technological developments in cable TV is the growth of over-the-top or what we sometimes call video-on-demand streaming services.  Online services such as Youtube and Netflix expand our content choices in ways unimaginable ten years ago.  However, these are mostly viewed using mobile devices (and therefore in smaller screens), and oftentimes can’t be enjoyed by more than one person at a time.

Enter the new SKY on Demand Box.

I’ve been excited about this new product development since I first heard about it and I’ve been anticipating its launch for some time now.

So please allow me to sing a few of my praises for the new SKY on Demand Box. 🙂

It lets you watch cable TV channels, Netflix and Youtube, all in one device.

Since the new SKY on Demand Box can connect to the internet and includes Netflix and Youtube among its launch apps, your TV viewing choices now cover all of your favorite cable channels, all the shows and movies available on Netflix in your area and all the clips uploaded on Youtube.

Want to catch the premiere of a new episode of Asian horror anthology Folklore on HBO? Check! Want to binge-watch the much-raved-about Outlander series on Netflix? Check! Want to learn makeup application from an online tutorial on Youtube? Check!

It basically turns your TV into a smart TV, helping you get more of the shows you love.

IMG_0801

It lets you catch up on the shows you missed.

Couldn’t make it home in time to catch a show as it airs?  Or is someone else hogging the TV when your favorite show comes on?

No worries: if the show is one of the titles available on SKY on Demand, you can watch the latest three episodes using the SKY on Demand app, which is included among the box’s launch apps.

Or you can also set your box to record the show even when you’re not at home as the box has a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) function. And guess what: even while someone else is watching another show on the TV, the SKY on Demand Box is recording the show you’re not watching so you can view it at your leisure.  No need to fight with hubby or the kids over the remote, yeah?

It comes with a companion app that extends the box’s functionalities even further.

By downloading its companion app (available on the App Store and Google Play) you can use your phone as your TV’s remote control, privately listen to the audio of the show you’re watching using your phone’s headset (no need to settle for almost-mute audio levels just because someone in the room is studying or sleeping), or watch cable channels on your phone.

Existing SKY subscribers can call the Customer Service hotline +63 2 381 0000 or visit any of the SKYzones or SKY offices in the metro.
