Sun Life Foundation and WWF collaborate for sustainable Food Shed Farming

Sun Life Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sun Life Philippines, has partnered with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines to establish two Food Shed Farming Enterprise projects in the province of Surigao del Norte. The collaboration aims to provide a sustainable source of food and economic resilience for low-income urban communities through food security and sustainable livelihoods.

The Food Shed Farming Enterprise projects will help secure food and livelihoods while mitigating food shortages in the community. Sustainable agriculture interventions will be used, along with the promotion of climate-resilient and sustainable production systems that minimize the impact of stresses contributing to limited food accessibility. By utilizing technology and sustainable agriculture practices, the initiative seeks to improve the resilience of the food supply chain in communities.

“With this collaboration, we hope to further improve the resiliency of the food supply of communities, especially with the threats that climate change poses to our food resources,” says Katherine Custodio, Executive Director of WWF.

Located in Del Carmen, Siargao Island, the Food Shed Farming Enterprise projects will be established in Brgy. Caub and Halian Island, benefiting 250 individuals through sustainable livelihoods and providing access to hyperlocal nutritious food for almost 2,000 locals. The projects will create economic opportunities for the locals through the promotion of sustainable farming practices, increasing their capacity to utilize technology, and providing training in climate-resilient and sustainable production systems.

“Through this collaboration with WWF, the Sun Life Foundation aims to provide food security, sustainable livelihoods, and climate-adaptive technologies for the locals of the island in an environmentally sustainable manner,” says Kristine Dianne Millete, Executive Director of the Sun Life Foundation. “It is our earnest hope that through this project, we can alleviate the effects of food shortages and help our farmers with alternative farming technologies that support food security even during times of pandemic,” Millete concluded.

Sun Life and Donny Pangilinan team up to promote health and financial wellness

There’s no question about it: it’s Donny Pangilinan’s time to shine. The young star has projects left and right, numerous billboards that sport his charming smile, and a fandom that is incredibly supportive of his engagements.

Donny is making the most of the opportunities coming his way. However, the glitz and glamor of showbiz can easily distract from the reality that it all comes with hard work, commitment, and even sacrifices. The busy schedule and daily pressures can take a toll on one’s health, both physical and mental, and Donny knows this all too well.

It’s a good thing that he grew up knowing just how important it is to take care of his body and mind, having been an athlete from a young age. He has raced in triathlons and competed in basketball tournaments, among others.

“Health has always been a top priority for me,” he says. “One important thing I’ve learned is to plot not just your work schedule but also your workout schedule. Don’t just revolve your work around your workouts. They must revolve around each other.”

He also makes it a point to protect his mental health. “It’s essential that we find a safe space to express ourselves,” he muses. “At the same time, we must also listen to others and be present for them when our capacity allows it.”

Donny reaps the fruits of good health in more ways than one. Apart from being physically and mentally well, the discipline and drive he has developed also extends to his finances. At only 25 years old, he has already invested in real estate and recently secured a health insurance plan.

“I don’t splurge anymore,” he shares. “I’m very hands-on now with my savings. I do still have moments when I treat myself and invest in memories through traveling or experiences, but I make sure that a big percentage of my money goes to savings and investments.”

Donny recognizes that others, especially those from his generation, may not have the capacity to secure their finances just yet and are still working hard for it. “I encourage them to avoid comparing their journey with others because everyone is on their own different road. Instead, find a group that will motivate and inspire you. Surround yourself with people who will help you reach those goals,” he advises.

It is this levelheadedness about building his own brighter future that Donny was selected by Sun Life Philippines to be its health ambassador specifically for the younger generation.

“We’re excited to have Donny on board because we share the same advocacies,” said Sun Life Chief Client Experience and Marketing Officer Carla Gonzalez- Chong. “Moreover, he is both a credible and inspiring model for the youth. We look forward to working with him as we strive to help the Gen Z secure their future.”

Filipino Actor James Blanco Takes Home Best Actor Award at Asian Film Festival

James Blanco emerged victorious at the 20th Asian Film Festival, clinching the esteemed Best Actor award for his remarkable performance in “Ang Matsing at ang Pagong” (The Monkey and the Turtle), directed by Daniel R. Palacio. Outshining 17 other nominees, Blanco’s portrayal of a hero unwittingly entangled in a disguised reality of corruption and violence captivated the jury, comprised of film director Enzo Aronica, screenwriter Roberto Recchioni, and journalist Marco Lodoli.

In their own words, the jurors praised Blanco’s passionate and nuanced interpretation of the character, as he navigated the role of a rural town’s vice mayor challenging the incumbent chief in the upcoming election. The award was presented by the director of the 20th Asian Film Festival, Antonio Termenini, and received by producers Vanessa Joy Palacio and Hilque Dairo on behalf of Blanco, who was unable to attend the event.

“Ang Matsing at ang Pagong” is the debut project of M1 Films, directed and written by Daniel Palacio. The film proudly represented the Philippines on an international stage, shedding light on social inequality, and denouncing political issues. Daniel’s tenacity in addressing pertinent societal matters in the Philippines was applauded by viewers, who were captivated by Blanco’s natural acting and creative interpretation of the character.

“I gave James the freedom to respond and react with his own interpretation of the character,” shared Daniel. “His creativity and dedication shone through in the film, and he even challenged the script on occasion, staying true to the character’s mindset. He was perfect for the role and the story I co-wrote with my mentor Armando Bing Lao.”

M1 Films executive producer Oliver Sy was also lauded for choosing a powerful story with a compelling voice for the company’s foray into the movie industry. The film’s world premiere was held at the esteemed Asian Film Festival in Rome, Italy, with over 80,000 Filipinos in attendance, including overseas Filipino workers from different parts of Italy who were deeply moved by the film’s resonant portrayal of their own life story.

As the consul general of the Philippine embassy in Rome, Donna Celeste Feliciano-Gatmaytan joined Daniel, Vanessa, and Dairo at the film festival, expressing her support and admiration for the film. Daniel welcomed the predominantly Italian audience, who were fascinated by his docu-drama cinema style, and when asked by the Italian press about his future plans, he quipped, “There’s no other purpose of my film but to denounce.”

“The words of appreciation from fellow Filipinos were already a great accomplishment,” Daniel continued. “The win was the cherry on top.”

In addition to co-writing the script, Armando Lao served as the editor of “Ang Matsing at Ang Pagong,” while Jeffrey Icawat and Jerel Travezonda were the cinematographers. Joining Blanco in the talented cast were Jana Victoria, Ryan Sandoval, Raquel Villavicencio, Cataleya Surio, Dido Dela Paz, and Lou Veloso.

Enhancing quality of life: Doc Pao Bellosillo’s approach to healthcare

Dr. Juan Paolo Bellosillo, known as “Doc Pao,” is a medical doctor with a passion for understanding and empowering his patients about their health condition. His expertise in preventive medicine, natural medicine, and energy medicine has enabled him to help many people achieve better health and wellness.

Doc Pao’s educational background is impressive. He obtained his undergraduate degree in economics from Ateneo de Manila University Loyola Schools, with concentrations in natural sciences, math, law, and foreign languages. Aside from his impressive medical background, Doc Pao has also undergone training and education in sports and nutrition. He supports athletes and the general public to fuel their performance in competitive races or the race of life. He has been educated and trained under the Philippine Red Cross in the areas of life support and first aid, and he was even President of his class composed of 70 nurses and allopathic doctors.

Doc Pao’s compassion for others led him to lead a team of Coast Guard Auxiliary and First Responders in a Medical-Psychological Mission in the heart of Tacloban, Leyte, during Typhoon Yolanda-Haiyan. He has also become a resource speaker in various TV programs such as Doctor’s on TV, Rise and Shine, and Good Morning Kuya, using the television to educate and reach out to people to avoid diseases and increase their quality of life.

During the pandemic, Doc Pao was actively helping those in need. He provided medical care and nutrition to around 400 patients, including law enforcement, military personnel, and civilians. Doc Pao also took care of a family of eight with varying medical needs, helping them overcome COVID-19 without being intubated during the height of the pandemic. He utilized a multidisciplinary team of healthcare workers, implementing cellular nutrition protocols, and monitoring the patients through compact equipment, even in their homes when hospitals were full.

Doc Pao’s ultimate goal is to help the Philippines develop a more realistic COVID-19 management system with zero casualties, utilizing whole medical systems. He advocates for enhancing the quality of life and helping people avoid becoming sick in the first place. He believes in the importance of exercise, a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep, even during these challenging times. As he says, “my passion is to understand, share and empower patients about their health condition.”
