#TitaAdventures Unleashed: Fun things to do in Subic

Picture this: A gathering of fabulous Titas from all over the country, armed with their signature oversized totes and killer style, converging upon the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. It’s a celebration of a dear friend’s birthday, and the stage is set for a weekend of adventure, delectable feasts, and unforgettable memories.

Join me – your friendly Tita Jellybeans – as I recount my escapades outside of the City in this playful travelogue that showcases the most fun things to do in Subic for Titas like us!

Chapter 1: Destination Subic Bay Freeport Zone

Our Tita Adventure began with an invitation to the birthday bash of a close friend, Mama Rhods, who gathered forty of her beloved family, cherished friends, and fabulous co-workers, for an epic celebration.

This shindig took place in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone — home of fantastic beaches, stunning sunsets, foodie and shopping adventures — a perfect destination for Titas seeking thrilling experiences without compromising comfort and style.

Chapter 2: Go on a Food Trip

No Tita adventure is complete without indulging in mouthwatering delights.

Together with two of my fellow Titas, my first stop was MeatPlus Cafe, where we seize the opportunity to savor their irresistible Steak Treats for Two offer. Juicy US rib-eye end cut steaks paired with a medley of veggies, bottomless drinks, and unlimited rice refills—it’s a gastronomic feast that satisfies our discerning palates (and craving for steaks!), all for just Php1,700.

MeatPlus Cafe is located at 65 Sampson Rd, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Olongapo, open Mondays to Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. (Follow it on Facebook).

And as self-proclaimed coffee connoisseurs, we made a detour to 727 Coffee & Co – a thriving coffeehouse with a distinct minimalist and modern feel (ran by Millenials and Gen Zs!) – for handcrafted coffee and jumbo cookies. Because, you know, a Tita needs her caffeine and sugar fix!

727 Coffee & Co is located at Building 727 Manila Avenue corner Dewey Avenue, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Olongapo, open Mondays to Thursdays from 7am to 9pm and Fridays to Sundays from 7am to 10pm. (Follow it on Facebook).

Chapter 3: Go on a Sunset Dinner Cruise

As the sun started its descent, we embarked on a sunset yacht cruise, courtesy of La Banca Travel & Tours. Aboard the vessel, we were treated to three hours of blissfully sailing through calm waters as we grooved and sang to lively party music. The golden sunset we were looking forward to may have been covered by an overcast sky, but the cooling breezes lifted our spirits and whet our appetites.

The dinner buffet tantalized our taste buds with street food skewers, mouthwatering pan-grilled steaks, succulent grilled fish and shrimp, and a delightful veggie salad. We definitely reveled in the experience, toasting to friendship and life’s sweet moments.

Chapter 4: Party All Night at the Beach

By the time the dinner cruise ended, the night iwas still young, and we were ready to unleash our inner party animals. Our next stop? Samba Blue Water Resort—a paradise where the waves meet our dance moves.

With overflowing drinks and a street food buffet spread out by the celebrant, we embraced the “pa-morning-an” spirit and danced the night away. A live singer, as well as gifted songstresses from our group, serenaded us, adding rhythm to our vibrant celebration. As you can see, these Titas know how to keep the party going!

(I don’t have a lot of pics for this party because, supposedly, what happens in Subic, stays in Subic! And I was too busy partying to take pictures, sorry!)

When I recovered from our pa-morning-an party, I was able to explore Samba Blue Water Resort the following morning before checking out. It is a family-friendly destination which offers affordable accommodations and fun beach activities such as island hopping tours and various water sports. Unfortunately, as I was only in Subic for the weekend, I will have to discover them on my next visit.

Chapter 5: Duty-Free Shopping Spree

No Tita adventure is complete without some retail therapy. The two Royal Duty Free outlets became our destination for duty-free shopping, where we got out our credit cards and eco bags and shopped for imported chocolates, delectable food items, and self-care products.

Sabik sa Subic

Our shopping bags overflowed with indulgence and a touch of luxury—perfect additions to our sophisticated Tita lifestyles. I was especially excited with my haul of four Tim Tam variants, seven Milka variants, two each of Betty Crocker Pound Cake Mix and Cream Cheese Frosting and a trio of Ox & Palm Corned Beef cans.

(Here’s a piece of trivia: Back in the day, these were referred to as “PX goods.” When the US military bases were still situated in Subic and Clark, stores that sell these products to US army personnel and their dependents were marked “PX,” short for “post exchange.” I bet you young’uns don’t hear that term much nowadays, do you?).

Sabik sa Subic

One of these Royal Duty Free outlets is located at 1109 Palm Street while the other is located at corner Manila Avenue and Canal Road, both within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Olongapo. (Follow it on Facebook).

Subic Bay Freeport Zone, with its irresistible charm and vibrant offerings, truly captivated us Titas seeking adventure without compromising our comfort and style.

From savoring sumptuous food, going all-out on retail therapy, to embarking on unforgettable cruises and dancing the night away on sandy beaches, we found Subic to be a haven of excitement tailored to Titas like us and will forever be etched in the annals of Tita history.

Many thanks to Rhods and family for this epic Subic celebration!

How about you, fellow Titas? What are you planning for your Subic adventure?

Introducing Airbnb Rooms

Originally, Airbnb began as a platform for sharing a room in someone else’s home, offering guests a chance to stay at affordable prices while experiencing the city like a local. Airbnb believes that the original concept is more important than ever, and now, with the pandemic over, the demand for travel is increasing. Airbnb Rooms has been created to ensure that guests are comfortable staying with a Host, and the new feature offers a way to get to know the Host through the Host Passport. The passport showcases a larger photo and details about the Host, including where they went to school and their profession, to help guests feel more at ease before booking a stay.

Airbnb has taken a design-driven approach to enhance the experience for guests and hosts, from sign up to checking out, and every step in between. Based on user feedback, Airbnb has launched over 50 new features and upgrades to improve the service, and these include:

  • Total price display: Guests can view the total price with fees before taxes across the entire app, including in search results, maps, price filters, and listing pages.
  • Transparent checkout instructions: Guests can now view checkout instructions on the listing page before booking, receive reminders before they leave the home, and tell Airbnb about excessive requests.
  • Improved maps: Updated maps have faster performance, persistent pins when zooming and panning, and more search results.
  • Redesigned wishlists: Wishlist interfaces are improved, including one-tap saving, improved calendars that show the availability of wishlisted homes, and the ability to add notes to wishlisted listings.
  • Simpler and more affordable monthly stays: Airbnb is reducing the guest service fee after the third month for stays over three months. Guests in the US can also save on stays over one month when paying with their linked bank account. A new Months tab features an all-new interface that makes it easy to select the length of stay.

Hosting on Airbnb gains momentum in the Philippines amidst growing appetite for travel

As the holiday season awaits and the travel rebound continues to unfold, more Filipino travelers are embracing flexible travel while more homeowners turn to hosting on Airbnb for additional income. A new survey commissioned by Airbnb* reveals that over half of Filipinos polled expressed interest in becoming Airbnb Hosts to take advantage of the new appetite for travel.

Around the world, Airbnb has seen strong growth rates of  new Hosts, especially in countries with high inflation rates. Notably, 77 percent of Filipinos polled said they were looking for ways to offset rising costs of living. The survey also shows that desire for travel remains high, with over a quarter of respondents saying that they will continue to find ways to travel even if general costs of living rise.

In a trend that started since the pandemic, millions are now enjoying their newfound freedom to live and work anywhere. Notably, 65 percent of Filipinos polled said that they are now more flexible in terms of their type of holidays and time of travel. Notably, of those who plan to travel within the next year, 1 in 4 Filipinos said they plan to travel without set dates.

This new approach to travel and living continues to shape the choice of accommodation among Filipino travellers. When asked about factors that influence when and how they travel:

  • Almost half indicated they are likely to travel if they can find accommodation that makes longer stays easy and comfortable
  • 35% pointed to destinations offering unique styles of accommodations
  • 25% prioritised access to amenities that make it easy to combine remote work with travel, such as a dedicated workspace and a fast, reliable internet connection

This growing appetite for travel among Filipinos puts homeowners in a unique position to take advantage of the Airbnb Setup, the all-new easy way to Airbnb one’s home which was announced early this month. In Q3, Pasay ranked as the #1 trending domestic destination for Filipino guests on Airbnb, followed by El Nido, Cebu City, Paranaque, and Iloilo City.**

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong and Taiwan, said the fundamental shifts towards long-term stays and flexible travel point to the increasingly important role that short-term accommodations (STRA) like Airbnb play in the new era of travel.

“This growing appetite for travel is a positive sign as tourism recovery gathers pace. More keenly, this is an opportune moment for aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs to Airbnb their homes and earn additional income to mitigate rising living costs or support their travels,” he added.

* Online survey of 1063 respondents in the Philippines commissioned by Airbnb and conducted by YouGov between 6-12 October 2022

** Based on increase in searches of destinations (minimum 1,000) in Q3 2021
