Calling all holiday goers! Summer is finally here – and so are the beach umbrellas, halo-halo and samalamig vendors popping up everywhere, and barkada group chats pinging every now and then for that highly anticipated beachside getaway.

As Filipinos throng the roads and airports with much enthusiasm this summer, data from Airbnb revealed that group travel has been on the rise with group travel spiking by almost 180 percent year-on-year last year.*

The quiet town of Santa Maria in Bulacan ranks the #1 domestic destination with the highest number of guest searches on Airbnb this summer, with other popular destinations including Malay, Baguio City, and Cebu City.**

If you’ve yet to make plans for the upcoming long weekend or the rest of summer, Airbnb has rounded up a list of unique, group-friendly Airbnb Stays in the hottest destinations under Php10,000 – making the spend no more than Php2,500 per person if you’re a barkada of four!

A taste of old Chinatown at Comida China de Manila’s new location in Libis

In May of last year, my family and I were shaken up by an announcement that one of our go-to restaurants – Comida China de Manila – located along C5 in Pasig, was closing after twenty-six years of operations.

Comida China de Manila was established in 1996 along E. Rodriguez Avenue (C5 Road), serving Old Chinatown cuisine – dishes that harken back to the Cantonese panciterias that proliferated in Manila during the pre- and post-war years. It has gained renown and a loyal clientele for its homey atmosphere and its delicious classic Chinoy dishes.

We were quite saddened with the news as the restaurant had long been the setting of many memorable family meals and celebrations. It was a shame, we thought, that the pandemic precluded us from having a last meal at this landmark eatery prior to its closing.

Back in business

Well, let’s fast-forward to March 2023 when, during a grocery run at S&R along Libis, we caught sight of a familiar signage at the ground floor of the building. Oh yes, Comida China is back in a brand new location!

It took us a while to be able to eat here as we usually espy a line of diners waiting outside the restaurant whenever we passed by. However, one Sunday morning, just after attending Mass, the family was able to grab a table as the restaurant has just opened for the day.

Now under new management, the restaurant boasts of a more modern layout, though in a much smaller area, with a capacity of 50 dine-in seats (which, if memory serves me right, was about a fourth of the seating capacity of the previous location), with no areas allotted for special functions or private parties unlike the old location.

This new restaurant’s interiors also have a lighter and airier feel, thanks to the natural light streaming in from floor -to-ceiling glass windows that look out to the Libis road. Its decor still calls back to the days of Old Chinatown, thanks to tasteful wall art and shiny hardwood furniture.

Old faves are back, albeit in smaller portions

As we browsed through the menu, we were delighted to see that our old favorites are still there – the same dishes created and curated by Comida China’s celebrated cook who began his career in the original T. Pinpin Street branch in Manila.

However, due to the smaller kitchen size, the servings were also smaller, in sizes good for two people (so goodbye, bandehados!). Still, this suits my fam just fine as we could then order multiple viands to try out more flavors, such as:

Ho To Tay Soup (Php394). This savory soup is made with a rich broth that is simmered with pork, liver and shrimp. It is then garnished with vegetables and served hot, making it the perfect comfort food.

Yang Chow Fried Rice (Php330). This classic Chinese fried rice dish is a staple at any Chinese meal for the fam. The dish is made with day-old white rice that is stir-fried with eggs, vegetables, and meat, such as shrimp, pork, or chicken. The result is a flavorful and filling dish that goes well with other Chinese viands.

The first of many

While the fam didn’t get to have our last meal at the old Comida China de Manila restaurant before it closed its doors, we were able to have our first meal at its newest one, and, thanks to its convenient location, excellent service and, of course, delicious dishes, it would definitely be the first of many.

Plus, I’ve heard from some sources that if this branch does well, there are plans to open more branches. So how about we extend some love and support to this newly opened Comida China de Manila?

As this branch is currently on soft opening, only payments via cash and credit card are accepted.

Take stunning nighttime photos with the new vivo V27 Series 5G, The Aura Portrait Master

When the sun goes down, the majestic city lights start to shine. Coffee turns into spirited drinks and slow music into electronic beats. You go dancing with your friends and have the time of your life. But the next morning, you barely remember anything from the night before and your blurry photos are not any help.

Let no amazing moment go undocumented! The vivo V27 Series, The Aura Portrait Master, features first-of-its-kind Aura Portrait Algorithm to produce photos with professional, studio-level quality. The latest addition to vivo’s V smartphone line and its newest release in the Philippines, the vivo V27 Series upgrades the industry-standard camera flash, sensors and portrait capabilities so you are assured of high-quality photos whether you’re shooting at night or in low-light locations.

Light up your aura with the Aura Light

Ever wonder why night photos do not come out vivid and clear even when you’re already using your flash? That is because ordinary camera flashes are designed to just light up a certain range around you. They are not specifically created for taking portraits.

vivo V27 Series’ Aura Light was designed to properly illuminate the subject’s face and create even lighting to keep the skin refined when taking photos in low-light environments. When it is toggled on, the camera automatically detects the ambient light and adjusts the Aura Light’s intensity based on the environment in order to produce night photos with clearer facial details without over- or underexposing the subject’s face.

Go and take as many photos with your friends or pose in your best aura underneath the spinning disco ball. No need to search for the spot with the best lighting. Just turn the Aura Light on and your portraits will surely come out as sensational as you!

Make night shots vibrant with the Sony IMX766V sensor

They say the bigger the sensors, the higher the image quality. vivo made upgrades to its flagship standard sensors by making them ultra-large and ultra-clear.

The vivo V27 Series’ camera is powered by the new Sony IMX766V sensor that is now 59 percent bigger in effective sensor size and 104 percent bigger in single-pixel size. By enlarging the sensors, the camera has 145 percent more light intake, which effectively boosts image quality and vibrance and makes images appear brighter and vivid even when they are taken in low-light conditions.

The new sensors also include the industry-leading Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) technology, which can handle all kinds of light situations and gets rid of jitters. Say goodbye to blurry night images because with the new ultra-clear sensors, photos you take during your night out with the squad will come out with clear details and more authentic colors. Don’t hesitate to take photos even if you’re right in the middle of the dance floor as the vivo V27 Series’ also comes with the EIS+OIS Dual Ultra Stabilization that can take a photo or video of you and your friends busting those awesome moves in great detail.

Set the vibe with the vivo V27’s Advanced Portrait Mode

The vivo V27 Series’ portrait mode is now supported by vivo’s Exclusive Portrait Algorithms. This new portrait mode helps understand, beautify and enhance portraits.

To make sure that your subject has a natural and healthy appearance, the vivo V27 Series’ portrait mode decodes information about your subject and coordinates with up to 103 facial points. The portrait mode’s AI algorithm retouches your subject’s face but without making unrealistic over-enhancements.

The portrait mode also creates a balance between your subject and the background using the new Low-Light Portrait feature. When the Low-Light Portrait feature is turned on, the Aura Light automatically turns on as well. The Aura Light will light up the subject’s face while the Low-Light Portrait enhances the background by adding tones, thereby creating a warm and vivid vibe. The resulting image then is not only high quality with stunning details but also depicts the same exciting and vibrant moment during which it was taken.

The Aura Light, the Sony IMX766V and the advanced Portrait Mode all create the newest and first-of-its-kind Aura Portrait Algorithm. Don’t let your night out outfit go to waste. Capture every exciting moment of your night out and let your best aura shine with the vivo V27 Series, The Aura Portrait Master.

The vivo V27e retails for PHP16,999 while the vivo V27 5G lists at PHP24,999. Both variants are now available for purchase in all vivo official stores nationwide. They are also available for purchase on vivo’s official website and Shopee, Lazada and TikTok pages.

Unlock the skincare benefits of glutacollagen for the whole family with SmoothGlow

I admit that early into my journey of motherhood, with all the roles I had to play and responsibilities that I had to take on for the family, I did let my personal skincare fall by the wayside. Fortunately, both Hubby and my eldest child #ExhibitA are both avidly into skincare and have slowly but surely educated me on the discipline of self-care.

This foray into skincare has led to one happy discovery: skincare products with glutacollagen – a powerhouse combo of two important skin-boosting ingredients: collagen and glutathione – can provide a multitude of benefits for the whole family.

Collagen is a protein that is naturally found in the skin and helps to keep it firm and elastic. As we age, our body’s natural collagen production decreases, leading to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By using skincare products that contain collagen, we can help to replenish our skin’s natural collagen levels and improve its overall appearance.

Glutathione, on the other hand, is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that can cause damage to our skin cells and accelerate the aging process. By using skincare products with glutathione, we can help to neutralize these free radicals and protect our skin from damage.

SmoothGlow
SmoothGlow

Using skincare products with glutacollagen, the family can achieve the following:

Improved skin elasticity. We can counter the ravages of time on our skin such as the loss of its natural elasticity, which would then lead to sagging and wrinkles. Collagen can help to improve skin elasticity and firmness, giving the skin a more youthful appearance.

Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen helps to plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helping to diminish the signs of aging and keep our skin looking youthful.

Brighter, more even skin tone. Glutathione helps to brighten and even out skin tone, reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation, resulting to a more radiant complexion.

Protection from environmental stressors. Did you know that environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays cause skin damage? Skincare products with glutathione provides protection from these stressors, helping to prevent premature aging and keep our skin looking healthy and youthful.

Improved overall skin health. Glutacollagen helps to reduce inflammation, prevent acne, and promote a clear, glowing complexion.

SmoothGlow

So the next challenge is finding a way to bring the benefits of glutacollagen to the family. The newly launched SmoothGlow skincare line helps me do just that.

This line includes:

Glutacollagen Lotion with SPF 60

This lotion contains Glutathione, Niacinamide, moisturizing Vit E, and nourishing shea butter to help improve skin elasticity , firmness and moisture retention. Thanks to its natural actives, it helps to slow skin aging. With gentle peeling effects to eliminate skin pigmentation and blemishes, it helps to lighten scars and skin tone for healthier glowing skin. It also provides effective protection against the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.

SmoothGlow

To use, gently massage an appropriate amount into skin until fully absorbed.

Glutacollagen Face and Body Whip with SPF 30

This whipped scrub emulsion helps improve skin hydration and provide sun protection. Regular use also helps in acne treatment and prevention, removal of dirt, dark spots and dead skin cells as well as minimizing pores and wrinkles, all resulting to radiant, soft and smooth skin. It is suitable for use by pregnant women, lactating moms and teenagers.

SmoothGlow

To use, apply an ample amount to the target area using small circular motions. Leave on for two to three minutes on your face and for twenty to thirty minutes on the body. Then, rinse with soap and pat dry.

Note: Never exfoliate when your skin has open cuts or wounds, or is sunburned.

Glutacollagen Soap with Himalayan Salt

Regular use of this soap can help improve skin texture and promote a smoother, brighter complexion. The exfoliating properties of Himalayan salt can help to remove dead skincells, revealing healthier-looking skin. The addition of collagen can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

SmoothGlow

This soap helps treat rosacea – the flushing, reddening and swelling of facial skin – as well as other skin conditions, while unclogging pores, evening skin tone and lightening dark spots.

It is best to patch test these products prior to application and discontinue use if negative reactions occur.

Clearly, taking care of your family’s skin is essential for their overall health and well-being. Skincare products with glutacollagen such as SmoothGlow can help to keep your family’s skin looking and feeling healthy, youthful, and radiant.

Want to incorporate these skincare products into your family’s skincare routine? The good news is that all three are available in a Trio Set for only Php699!

Exotic Filipino Dishes and Local Art: Why Balaw-Balaw Restaurant Should Be on Your List

If you’re a foodie and an art lover, you need to add Balaw Balaw Restaurant and in Angono, Rizal to your must-visit list.

This quaint eatery has long been an Angono landmark, thanks to its menu of exotic Filipino dishes and its extensive collection of Filipino art and artifacts.

After learning that our balikbayan tita has a hankering for the dish called kuhol sa gata (snail in coconut milk), Hubby and I set about looking for a restaurant that serves it which we can go to as we take our tita on a tour of Rizal.

After scanning through several articles from online publications and blogs, all touting the food and the unique ambiance of Balaw-Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery, we gamely included it in our itinerary.

Balaw-Balaw Restaurant

A visit to this establishment is also special to me, as I’m a foodie who likes doscovering new places to eat and recommend to my friends and I also like checking out local artworks.

So if you’re like me, you should definitely venture into Angono for a visit to this restaurant. Here are some reasons why:

The Food

Balaw Balaw Restaurant is known for its exotic and authentic Filipino dishes, which are not commonly found in other restaurants. Their signature dish, Balaw Balaw, is a fermented shrimp paste that is a must-try for adventurous eaters. The restaurant also offers other dishes like “adobong kamaru” (adobo-style crickets), and “frogs legs” (fried frog legs).

During our visit, we indulged our tita’s craving for ginataang kuhol (₱195), or snails cooked in coconut milk. We also went for more mainstream dishes such as inihaw na baboy (₱295) – grilled pork belly, and laing at gabi (₱270) – taro leaves cooked in coconut milk.

To cater to our monster-sized appetites and to introduce a variety of dishes in one fell swoop, we also ordered a medium minaluto (₱1,250), a bilao group meal good for three to four persons consisting of steamed rice, chicken adobo, grilled squid, battered fried fish, halabos na hipon, adobong kangkong, crab legs, clams, fresh tomatoes and salted egg.

The Art

The restaurant is also known for its extensive collection of Filipino art and artifacts. The walls are adorned with paintings, sculptures, and other artworks created by local artists. You’ll also find traditional wooden sculptures called “anitos” and a wall of painted plates by local artist Perdigon Vocalan.

The Cultural Experience

Dining at Balaw Balaw Restaurant is not just a culinary experience, but also a cultural experience. The restaurant is a celebration of Philippine culture and heritage. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a bygone era of Philippine history.

The Local Community

The restaurant is owned and operated by the family of the late painter and sculptor Perdigon Vocalan, who is considered one of the town’s most celebrated artists. The family has continued to honor their father’s legacy by showcasing his works and supporting the local art scene through their business. By dining at Balaw Balaw Restaurant, you are also supporting the local community.

The Location

Angono, Rizal is known for its vibrant art scene. The town has produced numerous acclaimed Filipino artists, such as Carlos “Botong” Francisco and National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva. The Balaw Balaw Restaurant is a part of this vibrant art scene in Angono. After your meal, you can explore the town’s art galleries and museums.

The Instagram-Worthy Spots

The restaurant is filled with Instagram-worthy spots. From the colorful plates to the intricate wood carvings, every corner of the restaurant is a feast for the eyes. Make sure to snap a few shots before you dig in!

Boost your kids’ digital, creative skills with Basecamp’s Design Trail

Kids today are considered as digital natives, making them more perceptive to developments in technology. But as it becomes even more advanced and fast-paced, it must be a challenge to catch up, especially if you are a busy parent. This is where Basecamp, Power Mac Center (PMC)’s official training provider, can step in.

Armed with a mission to equip kids, teens, and young adults with the digital skills critical in today’s modern world, Basecamp’s “Design Trail” and “Vision Hub” workshop series offer fun and age-appropriate digital courses on animation, game design, web design, video editing, and app development. Design Trail for Kids also has non-digital courses on drawing, painting, and science experiments. Enrollees in the Visayas and Mindanao region will also be provided with modules written in Cebuano. Courses will start onApril 11, 2023 and will be ongoing all year long.

“Parents always want the best for their kids, and Basecamp is here to help them provide the best digital learning experience. Just like a real base camp, we serve as a storehouse of food for the imagination and equipment needed by kids to survive the digital wilderness and, figuratively speaking, to scale the mountains ahead. Our courses are conducted by expert mentors who can readily address kids’ natural inquisitiveness and ensure their holistic development,” said Maleng Raysag, Basecamp Head.

Basecamp prepares youngsters to be the Philippines’ future animation artists, programmers, and filmmakers. It harnesses the power of Apple technology and equips workshop participants with the knowledge, skills, and aptitude to succeed in their chosen path or simply enjoy exploring their talents and interests. In particular, they can improve the following skills:

Storytelling with iPad

Kids who love telling tales will learn to express their ideas through comics brought to life by technology after completing the Design Trail courses “The Art of Comics” and “2D Animation using iPad.” Designed for those aged 7-10 years old, these courses will strengthen their visual communication skills through creating new characters from basic lines, shapes, and colors.

Older teens and young adults aged 16-21 years old, meanwhile, can enroll in Vision Hub’s “3D Creation and Animation for Beginners,” which takes it to the next level through animation techniques and software tools actually used in the industry.

Programming and STEM skills

Today, everything is run by technology, which means that we will need more programmers in the foreseeable future. If your child is constantly immersed in game platforms such as Roblox and Minecraft, might as well get them a more structured training course that can teach them how to build their own Roblox game and publish it on Roblox Studio. They can also familiarize themselves with Minecraft for Education, which is a great tool for learning that builds science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills, unleashes creativity, and engages students in collaboration and problem-solving.

Kids can learn the discipline involved in creating their own games through various software and programming languages, while teens and young adults can hone their skills in web design, video editing, and app development. These digital courses are conducted either online or face- to-face and available year-round so your kids can fit them in their free time.

Non-digital skills

Design Trail for Kids also offers courses designed to develop analog skills such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and manga-creation. In addition, young scientists are invited to discover scientific concepts through hands-on activities and inquiry-based learning.

These non-digital courses are conducted exclusively in person, in order to increase children’s appreciation for the value of hands-on work and imagination. The Basecamp training center is located at 3/L Glorietta 5, Ayala Center, Makati City.

Design Trail classes are conducted in the course of 4 days, for 1.5hours each session. Digital courses are priced at P2,500 per student per course for online sessions, and P3,000 for face-to-face classes. Non-digital courses can be availed at P3,000 each. Vision Hub’s online courses are priced at P5,500 per head, per course, conducted over 5 days per course, for 15 hours in total.
