Exploring the Philippines with Airbnb: A Rising Trend Among Southeast Asian Travelers

In a world reshaped by the pandemic, travel has taken on a new dimension. As borders reopen and adventurers eagerly dust off their passports, Southeast Asia is witnessing an intriguing phenomenon. Airbnb, a pioneer in redefining travel experiences, is revealing compelling trends that showcase a fervent interest in the Philippines among Southeast Asian travelers.

Chinese Wanderlust: A Philippines Affair

Year-on-Year Surges in Chinese Travelers’ Interest

China’s resurgence in international travel has sent ripples of excitement through the Southeast Asian region. The Philippines, with its stunning landscapes and warm hospitality, has become an alluring gem for Chinese tourists. Airbnb’s latest data unveils a staggering tenfold increase in guest searches among Chinese travelers year-on-year. It seems the allure of pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history has captured the hearts of our neighbors to the north.

Domestic Travel’s Remarkable Comeback

Philippines: A Domestic Travel Hotspot

As international travel regains its footing in Southeast Asia, domestic tourism is proving to be an unwavering favorite among locals. The Philippines, in particular, has witnessed a remarkable resurgence in local wanderlust. In 2022, the number of nights booked on Airbnb more than doubled compared to 2020. The archipelago was proudly crowned as the #1 travel destination for Filipino travelers in 2022.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, emphasized the significance of domestic tourism. “A weekend trip to a nearby destination is not only easier to plan but also much more affordable. Airbnb has played a pivotal role in supporting domestic tourism by offering a diverse range of affordable accommodations in new and exciting locations. This allows our guests to explore a multitude of destinations they might have never considered before.”

Unlocking Hidden Treasures: A Global Trend

From Popular to Lesser-Known: The Airbnb Effect

In 2022, Airbnb’s global guests ventured into over 100,000 different cities and towns. Interestingly, the top 10 most-visited destinations accounted for just 7 percent of all trips, down from 10 percent in 2019. Airbnb’s travelers are increasingly turning their gaze away from the well-trodden paths, expanding their horizons into lesser-known communities.

Since March 2020, more than 13,000 towns and cities worldwide received their inaugural Airbnb booking. In the Philippines, this trend is no exception. Over 900 new towns and cities have experienced their first-ever Airbnb bookings, marking a significant shift toward more diverse travel experiences.

Flexibility Breeds Exploration

A Novel Way to Explore

One standout revelation is Airbnb’s flexible search features, which empower travelers to break away from the tourist hordes. Data shows that guests using these features are markedly less likely to stay in the most popular destinations on Airbnb. Approximately 1 in 20 stays on Airbnb are now booked using flexible search. Globally, flexible bookers are about 23 percent less likely to choose the top 20 destinations on Airbnb.

Amanpreet Bajaj underscored the importance of this shift, saying, “Distributed travel is affordable, bolsters local economies and jobs, and immerses people in communities. Airbnb is committed to dispersing guests, income, and tourism benefits beyond the usual hotspots to new and trending destinations. We acknowledge the challenges posed by mass tourism globally and are investing in solutions to mitigate these while introducing our guests to fresh communities and income streams for locals.”

In a world where travel is no longer just a journey but a transformative experience, Airbnb continues to be at the forefront, redefining how we explore our world, one destination at a time.

About Airbnb

Born in 2007 from the warm embrace of two hosts welcoming three guests into their San Francisco home, Airbnb has since blossomed into a global phenomenon. With over 4 million dedicated hosts opening their doors to more than 1.5 billion guest arrivals across the globe, Airbnb has made it possible for travelers to forge authentic connections with communities worldwide. Every day, Airbnb offers unique stays and experiences that redefine the essence of travel.

As the world continues to evolve, so does the way we explore it, and Airbnb is leading the way. So, whether you’re a traveler or a host, remember, your next adventure is just a click away.

Ken is hosting: Stay at Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse on Airbnb

Step aside, Barbie, because this summer it’s Ken’s turn to take hosting to a whole new level. Brace yourselves as Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse returns to Airbnb, but this time with a twist – Ken is the man in charge!

As Barbie makes her dazzling live-action film debut in the highly anticipated BARBIE movie, Ken, portrayed by the charismatic Ryan Gosling, is handing over the keys and inviting guests to experience an unforgettable overnight stay in the newly renovated and iconic Malibu Dreamhouse.

While Barbie is undeniably the epitome of perfection, Ken has taken the opportunity to infuse the Dreamhouse with his own personal touch. Imagine rolling through the spacious halls on a pair of rollerblades – just one of the things Ken is crazy about. Don’t worry, though, Barbie’s signature pink is still ever-present throughout the life-size, toy-inspired home. She has certainly put her redecorating skills to work since the last time the Malibu Dreamhouse was available for guests.

“We all have dreams, and Barbie is lucky enough to have a house full of them,” said Ken with a charming smile. “But now, it’s my turn, and I can’t wait to host guests inside these one-of-a-kind – dare I say, one-of-a-Ken? – digs.”

Ken’s venture into hosting is a celebration of the BARBIE movie’s release, directed by the talented Greta Gerwig, with a screenplay penned by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. The star-studded cast includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.

Discover the Dreamhouse

Experience Nestled in the sunny paradise of Malibu, this oceanfront mansion boasts breathtaking panoramic views, setting the stage for Ken’s picture-plastic paradise. Fans can now request to book Ken’s bedroom in the Malibu Dreamhouse for two individual one-night stays, accommodating up to two guests each, on July 21 and July 22, 2023. And the best part? All stays are free of charge! After all, Ken’s thing is beach vibes, not crunching numbers.

During their stay in the Dreamhouse, guests will have the opportunity to live life in vivid technicolor by:

  1. Raiding Ken’s Incredible Wardrobe: Channel your inner fashionista and explore Ken’s jaw-dropping wardrobe collection. Move over, Barbie; Ken has quite the fashion sense too!
  2. Dancing the Night Away: Get your cowboy boots ready and master a line dance or two on Ken’s outdoor disco dance floor. Alternatively, unleash your inner musician and treat the sunset with a serenade using Ken’s trusty guitar.
  3. Beach Off Competition: Challenge your fellow guests to the ultimate “beach off” extravaganza. Lounge by the infinity pool, soak up the sun, and perfect the art of chillaxing.
  4. Take a Piece of the Kendom Home: Bid farewell to the Dreamhouse but not without a memento of your unforgettable stay. Each guest will receive their very own set of yellow-and-pink Impala rollerblades and surfboards to take home, allowing the Kendom spirit to live on.
How to Book Your Dream Stay

Beginning July 17 at 10 a.m. PT, everyone in Barbie Land can request to book Ken’s room in Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse at airbnb.com/kendreamhouse. Keep in mind that guests are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from Malibu, ensuring a smooth journey to paradise.

*Plus taxes and fees

**These two, one-night stays for up to two guests are not a contest. The home is independently owned and operated. The right holders for Barbie and the Ken character have been compensated for their participation.

By supporting this remarkable organization, Airbnb is helping provide learning resources and support to children, families, and communities in over 100 countries, ultimately building girls’ confidence and helping them excel in school. Together, we strive to ensure that every individual has equal opportunities to achieve success.

Discover Airbnb’s Unique Story

Airbnb’s story began in 2007 when two visionary hosts welcomed three adventurous guests to their humble San Francisco abode. Since then, it has flourished into a global community of over 4 million hosts who have opened their doors to 1.4 billion guests from nearly every corner of the world. Every day, Airbnb’s hosts offer unique stays and experiences, fostering authentic connections and allowing guests to truly immerse themselves in the communities they visit.

So, if you’re seeking an unforgettable getaway that combines glamour, fun, and the chance to contribute to global progress, Ken’s Malibu Dreamhouse on Airbnb is the ultimate destination. Secure your spot in this dreamy paradise, and let Ken show you the true meaning of California cool.

Gassho-zukuri Farmhouses: A Testimony to Time and Harmony

The village’s Gassho-zukuri style farmhouses, including the Nakashima family home, are unique to the region. Their pitched, thatched roof structures are designed to withstand heavy winter snowfall and have stood the test of time. Thatching is a local tradition that requires immense time and effort, fostering a spirit of mutual support known as “yui” among the locals. Suganuma village embodies the harmony between its people and nature.

Embracing immersive travel: How Filipinos are opting for longer stays with Airbnb

Airbnb, the leading online marketplace for lodging and travel experiences, reveals a significant increase in the popularity of long-term stays among Filipino travelers. With a growth rate of over 2.4 times year-on-year in 2022, the trend indicates a shift towards slower and more meaningful travel experiences. As the upcoming off-peak season approaches, Airbnb encourages travelers to take advantage of lower travel fares and consider extended trips. To inspire potential adventurers, Airbnb shares the story of Liezl Jose, the winner of the ‘Fly and Live Anywhere’ contest, who embarked on a month-long immersive travel adventure with her family.

Embracing a New Way of Travel

In the pursuit of escaping the confines of the pandemic and exploring new horizons, Liezl and her family eagerly sought an opportunity for relaxation and adventure. Winning the ‘Fly and Live Anywhere’ campaign through Airbnb felt like destiny, offering them the perfect chance to fulfill their dreams of visiting off-the-beaten-path destinations and creating lasting memories as a family.

According to Liezl, “An adventure doesn’t always have to be in far-flung regions or the most popular destinations because there are so many choices in our beautiful islands. Some natural wonders are practically in our backyards.”

During their month-long journey, Liezl and her family immersed themselves in the wonders of Dumaguete, Boracay, and Cagayan de Oro. They discovered the rural charm, indulged in the local food scene, witnessed breathtaking sunsets on stunning beaches, and even experienced adrenaline-filled whitewater rafting. Additionally, they embarked on road trips to Rizal and Batangas, where they reveled in picturesque natural landscapes and countryside beauty.

For Liezl and her family, the contest provided not only an opportunity to travel but also a chance to embrace the digital nomad lifestyle. Working and attending remote school from various locations, they discovered the joy of living like digital nomads while uncovering hidden gems in their own country.

Tips for Modern Travelers

Drawing from her experience, Liezl shares her top tips for anyone planning a multi-city adventure:

  1. Choose Accommodations Carefully: When booking longer stays, prioritize Airbnb listings that offer reliable WiFi connection and essential amenities like drinking water, bathroom supplies, and a well-equipped kitchen. These small details contribute to creating a home away from home experience.
  2. Explore Local Culture: To truly experience the local culture of your destination city, start by visiting local markets. Walking around allows you to explore the neighborhood and gain insights into the local food, people, language, and lifestyle.
  3. Travel Light: Pack efficiently and double-check airline policies and airport transfers in case of last-minute schedule changes.
  4. Disconnect and Immerse: Take breaks from technology and immerse yourself in your surroundings. Be present, respect the locals, appreciate the natural beauty, and take time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Embracing the Journey

Liezl reflects on her month-long getaway with her loved ones, emphasizing the importance of embracing the present and cherishing every moment. “No two sunsets are the same. Each one is different. Yet, it comes from the same sun. It doesn’t matter where we are; we belong anywhere we choose to make our home for the day.”

Airbnb launches Airbnb Rooms: A new way to share homes

Airbnb has announced its summer 2023 release, which is set to introduce over 50 new features and upgrades, with the introduction of Airbnb Rooms being the most significant. In a bid to accommodate the expected 300 million guests for the summer season, Airbnb Rooms offers a new way to share homes. With more than 1 million private bedrooms featured in a new Rooms category, guests can enjoy a more authentic way of travelling that is affordable and provides unique experiences.

“With Airbnb Rooms, we’re getting back to the idea that started it all – back to our founding ethos of sharing,” said Brian Chesky, Airbnb co-founder and CEO. “Airbnb Rooms are often more affordable than hotels, and they’re the most authentic way to experience a city. This is the soul of Airbnb.”

Introducing Airbnb Rooms

Originally, Airbnb began as a platform for sharing a room in someone else’s home, offering guests a chance to stay at affordable prices while experiencing the city like a local. Airbnb believes that the original concept is more important than ever, and now, with the pandemic over, the demand for travel is increasing. Airbnb Rooms has been created to ensure that guests are comfortable staying with a Host, and the new feature offers a way to get to know the Host through the Host Passport. The passport showcases a larger photo and details about the Host, including where they went to school and their profession, to help guests feel more at ease before booking a stay.

50+ New Features and Upgrades Based on User Feedback

Airbnb has taken a design-driven approach to enhance the experience for guests and hosts, from sign up to checking out, and every step in between. Based on user feedback, Airbnb has launched over 50 new features and upgrades to improve the service, and these include:

  • Total price display: Guests can view the total price with fees before taxes across the entire app, including in search results, maps, price filters, and listing pages.
  • Transparent checkout instructions: Guests can now view checkout instructions on the listing page before booking, receive reminders before they leave the home, and tell Airbnb about excessive requests.
  • Improved maps: Updated maps have faster performance, persistent pins when zooming and panning, and more search results.
  • Redesigned wishlists: Wishlist interfaces are improved, including one-tap saving, improved calendars that show the availability of wishlisted homes, and the ability to add notes to wishlisted listings.
  • Simpler and more affordable monthly stays: Airbnb is reducing the guest service fee after the third month for stays over three months. Guests in the US can also save on stays over one month when paying with their linked bank account. A new Months tab features an all-new interface that makes it easy to select the length of stay.
