10 Home Improvement Projects That Actually Add Value to Your Home

For most Filipinos, home ownership is not just a sign of having “made it” but it’s also a physical manifestation of years of hard work. Investing in home improvement projects is, therefore, not just a way to increase the projected selling value of a property but also the intrinsic value it has for homeowners. Since not all home improvements will boost both a home’s selling price and its livability for the current homeowner, it’s important to focus on projects that strike a balance between practicality and personal appeal.

Below are ten home improvements that should do just that:

Spruced Up Bedrooms

Bedrooms are where most people spend the bulk of their time at home. Given that, it makes sense to spend a bit more on your bedroom furniture as well as on the fixtures that matter for this space. Windows should have hardware for blinds and curtains and they should also be upgraded to sliding, casement, or other window types that can open wide but still be sealed tightly to block out outside noise and help keep air-conditioned air in. If needed, the fixtures and the electrical outlets for the air-conditioner should also be redone to give the room a neater appearance.

Remodeled Kitchen

Unlike in other frequently used rooms like bedrooms, the layout and fixtures of a kitchen can significantly influence the safety and usability of the space. Work with a qualified interior designer— preferably someone who also cooks—to remodel your kitchen into a space that’s a joy to work in.

Focus on optimizing the sink and faucet layouts, countertops, ventilation, tiles, lighting, and having enough space and electrical outlets to accommodate frequently used appliances. If the space also doubles as a dining area or laundry room, make sure that these functions do not interfere with the main function of the kitchen.

Updated Bathroom

A renovated bathroom with updated fixtures, fresh tiling, and modern lighting can create a sense of luxury on a relatively modest budget. While you can go all the way with luxury fixtures, there are now plenty of affordable options for sprucing up your bathroom that won’t necessarily break the bank.

At the very least, make sure that the shower area has non-slip tiles and that the toilet can flush properly. Nice-to-haves include extra-large mirrors, ample cabinets for storing bath towels and toiletries, mood lighting, properly-installed safety outlets on the countertop, a nice faucet that properly clears the sink, and a new bidet.

Improved Storage Areas

Potential buyers appreciate homes with ample storage space, so investing in your storage areas can pay off. If you do have storage rooms, make sure to include ample shelving, storage supplies, lighting, and ventilation to impress would-be buyers.

However, if you have a garage, it’s generally a bad idea to convert the whole thing into a dedicated storage area. Many home buyers prefer to have a dedicated garage, and you may find that you need the extra space for a car, in the future. If you do want to convert your garage into a storage room, make sure that you can still easily revert it to its original function.

Updated Electrical System

An outdated electrical system can pose safety risks and can be a major turnoff for potential buyers. Upgrading the electrical system by adding more outlets and ensuring that it can accommodate modern technology can make your home safer and much more convenient to live in while also giving it a serious competitive edge in the real estate market.

Repainted Walls

A fresh coat of paint works wonders in transforming the look and feel of a home. If you’re serious about selling your home, opt for less-trendy neutral colors that appeal to a broader range of potential buyers.

Power-Washed Exteriors

Curb appeal matters, and nothing freshens up the exterior of a home quite like a thorough power wash. Use a pressure washer to clean the siding, decks, walkways, and driveways and instantly revive the appearance of your home.

Tidy Landscaping

To maintain your property’s value you should, at least, try to trim overgrown bushes and tree branches that are edging into your neighbor’s property. Additionally, avoid leaving junk cars, DIY projects, and junk out where people can see them. Lastly, you can plant colorful flowers, and ensure that your lawn is watered and mowed every 7 to 10 days. Doing these basic landscaping tasks should result in a visually appealing exterior that can make your home stand out among other properties on the market.

Fresh Molding

Crown molding, baseboards, and trim can take a beating in the humid Philippine climate. Adding or refreshing these fixtures can give interior rooms a more elegant appearance that improves the look, feel, and overall value of your home. Removing molding also provides opportunities to plug any hidden gaps that mice and other pests could use to enter your home.

New Doormat

While it might be the smallest project on this list, a new doormat can make a surprisingly significant impact. A clean and attractive doormat welcomes guests and potential buyers alike. It’s a simple touch that sets a positive tone as soon as someone enters your home.

Focusing on the areas above should increase your home’s value without cleaning out your savings. But while these suggestions should raise your home’s market value, at the end of the day, your home is still your home. If you intend to live in the house you’re improving, your remodeling choices should be fully focused on creating a space that makes you happy.

Declutter and Thrive: How an organized home can change your life

We’ve all experienced the effects of a disorganized living space at some point – whether it’s the frustration of not finding your keys, the stress of a cluttered kitchen, or the constant battle with overflowing closets. But this shouldn’t be a given!

With a few simple rules of thumb and a little effort, you can transform your home into a well-organized haven that’s both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

The Chaos of Clutter: A Disorganized Home’s Many Faces

Imagine walking into your home after a long day, and instead of feeling welcomed by a serene and tidy environment, you’re greeted by chaos and clutter. The negative impacts of a disorganized home are far-reaching and affect multiple aspects of your life.

A cluttered and disorganized home often lacks visual appeal. It can make your living spaces appear messy, chaotic, and far from the inviting sanctuary you desire. Additionally, maintaining such a home can be an uphill battle, leading to frequent cleaning frustrations. Valuable space often goes unused or underutilized, leading to wasted potential.

Beyond aesthetics, disorganization can hinder the functionality of your home. The difficulty of finding items when needed is a common complaint. When your belongings aren’t properly stored, daily tasks become more challenging. Safety hazards may also emerge as cluttered spaces increase the risk of tripping or falling over objects. Moreover, impaired productivity can result from trying to work or study in a cluttered environment.

The consequences of a disorganized home aren’t limited to the physical realm. It can take a toll on your mental and social well-being. The constant presence of clutter can lead to stress and anxiety, making it harder to relax and unwind. Tensions can arise among family members or roommates, straining relationships. Personal space may become limited, affecting your overall comfort. Even hospitality can be impacted, as an untidy home may deter you from inviting guests over.

The good news? You don’t have to live with these negative effects. By following a few straightforward rules of thumb, you can regain control of your living space and enjoy the benefits of a well-organized home.

Mastering the Art of Home Organization: Simple Rules of Thumb

Organizing your home doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. By embracing some common-sense principles, you can efficiently optimize your storage space and create an environment that’s not only organized but also aesthetically pleasing.

IKEA Lifestyle

Declutter Regularly:

Regularly decluttering your home is the cornerstone of effective organization. Make it a habit to review your belongings and part ways with items you no longer use or need. Embrace the “one in, one out” rule – for every new item you bring in, consider donating or discarding an old one. This keeps clutter at bay and ensures that your space remains functional and inviting.

Prioritize Functionality:

Start by thinking about the function of each room or space in your home. Consider what items need to be stored there and how frequently you access them. Then, design your storage solutions accordingly. Here are some practical tips:

  • Create zones within each room based on their functions. For example, establish a kitchen zone for cooking utensils, a cleaning zone for supplies, and a study zone for office materials.
  • Rotate seasonal items in and out of storage to keep your space uncluttered and functional.
  • Keep frequently used items at eye level or within easy reach to minimize the time spent searching.
  • Maximize vertical space by installing tall shelves, cabinets, or wall-mounted organizers. This utilizes space efficiently without consuming valuable floor space.
  • Make the most of closet space with space-saving hangers, shoe organizers, and closet systems.
  • Don’t forget about under-bed storage, a often-overlooked treasure trove for seasonal clothing, shoes, or storage bins.

Gear Up for Organizing:

Now that you’ve cleared the clutter and have a plan in place, it’s time to equip yourself with the right tools and strategies to maintain an organized home:

  • Opt for multifunctional furniture that serves multiple purposes. Consider ottomans with hidden storage, beds with drawers, or sofas that convert into beds.
  • When space allows, consider built-in storage solutions. Built-in bookshelves, custom closets, and cabinets can be tailored to your specific needs and maximize available space.
  • Use clear containers or labeled bins to easily identify the contents of storage containers. This prevents the need to open multiple containers to find what you’re looking for.
  • Implement drawer dividers to keep small items, like socks, utensils, or office supplies, neatly separated and easily accessible.
  • Install hooks and pegs on walls or the backs of doors to hang items like keys, bags, or accessories, keeping them off countertops and tables.
  • Label everything! Whether it’s storage bins, shelves, or drawers, labeling ensures that items find their designated spots, making it easier for everyone in the household to maintain order.

With these rules of thumb in mind, you’re well on your way to creating an organized home that’s not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. But let’s not stop here; there’s more to gain from a well-organized home.

The Benefits of a Well-Organized Home

Picture this: you open your front door, and a sense of calm and serenity washes over you. Your living space is neat, organized, and visually appealing. Everything has a designated place, and you can easily find what you need. But the benefits of a well-organized home extend beyond aesthetics; they encompass functionality, mental well-being, and even your social life.

IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle

The most immediate and visible benefit of an organized home is its aesthetic appeal. Clutter-free living spaces are visually pleasing, creating an inviting and tranquil atmosphere. The clean lines, tidy surfaces, and well-arranged decor contribute to an overall sense of order and harmony. Your home becomes a reflection of your personal style, and you can proudly showcase your cherished belongings.

Organization also enhances the functionality of your home. You can effortlessly locate and access items, streamlining daily routines and tasks. With a designated place for everything, you’ll spend less time searching and more time enjoying your space. Functionality extends to room usage; organized spaces allow you to maximize the potential of each room, ensuring that it serves its intended purpose efficiently.

Lastly, the benefits of an organized home reach beyond the physical realm and positively impact your mental and social well-being. Here’s how:

  • Stress Reduction: A cluttered and disorganized home can contribute to stress and anxiety. In contrast, an organized space fosters a sense of calm and control, allowing you to unwind and relax.
  • Improved Relationships: An organized home can lead to more harmonious relationships with family members or roommates. Reduced clutter and orderliness promote a sense of well-being, reducing tension and disputes.
  • Personal Space: Your personal space is a vital aspect of well-being. An organized home ensures that you have designated areas where you can retreat, relax, and recharge. This is essential for maintaining mental and emotional health.
  • Hospitality: An organized home encourages hospitality. You’ll feel more comfortable inviting friends and family over, enhancing your social life and fostering connections.
  • Motivation and Confidence: Achieving and maintaining an organized home can boost motivation and confidence. It’s a tangible accomplishment that can positively impact your overall outlook on life.

Home improvement on a budget: 5 affordable ways to spruce up your living space

As the year progresses, maintaining a welcoming and enjoyable home for your family and guests can become challenging. However, costly remodeling and renovations are not the only options. You can start by implementing small and inexpensive changes to spruce up your living space. Here are some cost-efficient ideas to improve your home without breaking the bank.

Optimize Your Monthly Subscriptions

Ensure that your home caters to your needs without straining your budget. Review your monthly subscriptions for cable, internet, or streaming services and evaluate if they provide value for money. Consider consolidating your subscriptions or switching to a more cost-effective option.

For instance, when selecting an internet subscription, prioritize finding the right speed for your daily requirements. SKY Fiber offers affordable plans tailored for casual browsing, streaming, or remote work. As an added benefit, their Super Speed Plans are currently enhanced until December 31 due to a free speed boost promotion. For example, you can subscribe to the 20Mbps Plan for only P999/month and enjoy speeds of up to 30Mbps until year-end. Alternatively, the Plan 30Mbps, priced at P1,299/month, provides speeds of up to 75Mbps at no additional cost until the end of the year.

Rearrange and Refresh Your Living Spaces

A simple rearrangement of furniture and reorganization of your living and work areas can make a significant impact on the overall atmosphere of your home. Experiment with different layouts and placements to create a fresh and inviting environment. Consider relocating your workspace to an area with ample sunlight and minimal noise, as this can enhance your productivity.

Declutter and Sell Unwanted Items Online

Avoid accumulating clutter, as it can make your home appear untidy. Identify items, appliances, or devices that you rarely use and assess their condition. Discard broken or unusable items, and consider giving away or selling functional ones to generate some extra income.

With a reliable internet connection, you can easily sell your preloved items on various secondhand buy-and-sell platforms or social media. Numerous apps are available to assist you in managing inquiries from potential buyers and coordinating deliveries.

Invest in Durable Furniture, Appliances, and Storage Solutions

When considering new purchases for your home, opt for durable and multipurpose furniture, appliances, and storage solutions. These investments will provide long-term value while helping you maintain an organized living space. Look for items such as couches that can double as additional beds or ottomans that offer extra storage. By utilizing multifunctional pieces, you not only maximize utility but also save space for your family.

DIY Home Improvement Projects

Engage in simple do-it-yourself (DIY) projects to enhance your home. Small tasks like replacing dim light bulbs, creating a hanging garden, or applying a fresh coat of paint to walls and furniture can instantly brighten up your living space. DIY projects not only save money but also offer an opportunity to personalize your home. You can find numerous online resources and tutorial videos to guide you through the process.

By implementing these cost-efficient ideas, you can transform your home without incurring substantial expenses. Remember that a reliable internet connection can be instrumental in facilitating several of these improvements. Take advantage of the ongoing promotions for SKY Fiber Super Speed Plans, which offer boosted speeds until December 31 and free installation until July 31 with the presentation of a valid ID. Why you should design your bedroom with a Scandi aesthetic

The Scandinavian aesthetic – which originated from Nordic countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland – has stayed in prominence among design styles preferred by home owners for quite some time.

Characterized by clean lines, light spaces and the absence of clutter – hallmarks of Nordic minimalism – this design theme has the surprising ability to imbue the look and feel of warmth and welcome into a space, as well as having a strong visual appeal.

IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle

Basic Principles

Scandinavian design is guided by the principles of balance and harmony with one’s environment using well-crafted and high-quality items while remaining unencumbered by excess clutter.

This design philosophy uses a minimalist and well-considered approach which seeks to combine beauty and functionality, resulting in a sleek and modern decor that still feels warm and inviting.

Scandinavian design principles for the bedroom

It’s not surprising then that Scandi themes translate quite well in bedrooms.

The bedroom is space within the home dedicated to resting and restoring oneself – where one shakes off the concerns from the outside world at the end of the day, and then prepares for the challenges of a new day.

Within this space, one should be able to take a restful slumber, do relaxing activities like reading or meditation, or just enjoy one’s solitude.

The bedroom should definitely be a welcoming place, somewhere to let loose and relax. Applying Scandi design principles to one’s bedroom helps to bring about these desired effects.

IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle
IKEA Lifestyle

Here are rules of thumb that will help you design a tasteful Scandi bedroom:

Keep it simple.

Prioritize simplicity and functionality by keeping the bedroom free of clutter and unessential elements. Use sleek, clean-lined modern furniture, while implementing proper arrangement and storage of the room’s elements. Doing so will help to declutter your mind, resulting into a more relaxing space.

Use muted colors.

Scandi design uses quite a lot whites, grays and tans, and complements this neutral and nature-based palette with accents of blue and other bright colors. These contribute to less unwanted visual stimulation and gives the room a more soothing atmosphere.

Maximize natural light.

Artificial sources of illumination may increase risks for migraines and eye strain so it follows that making the most of natural light will help in minimizing these risks, and has the bonus benefit of improving one’s sleep cycle.

Painting the walls white as well as making minimal use of window treatments help to optimize the natural light the enters the bedroom.

Bring the outside in.

Nature plays a big role in Scandi design, attributable to the natural beauty of Scandinavian countries, as well as their long winter season which led to the desire to incorporate natural elements into interior spaces.

This can be achieved through the use of plants and flowers that add pops of color to the minimalist design, as well as through the use of light woods such as beech, ash and pine which inject warmth into the space.

Design for hygge.

Scandinavian design embraces the concept of hygge – the quality of coziness and comfort that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being – which would definitely suit the bedroom.

Adding elements that add joy or the feeling of living well such as cool and silky bed sheets, a comfy comforter, or tasteful artwork will not only personalize your bedroom but also create a space you would look forward to escaping to.

Spruce up your outdoor areas to supplement your wellness goals at AllHome

Summer’s almost here and you know what that means: more time spent outdoors!

During pre-pandemic times, outdoor living spaces such as patios, decks and porches – were used mainly for entertainment and recreation. However, in the past two years, people are increasingly doing activities outside such as gardening, barbecuing, playing with their kids and pets, exercising, or simply relaxing.

AllHome Outdoor
AllHome Outdoor
AllHome Outdoor

International Casual Furnishings Association executive director Jackie Hirschhaut reported that in contrast to consumer behavior in early 2020 where outdoor spaces were being designed to complement homes and lifestyles, current trends indicate outdoor spaces are now being created to supplement that “supplement our sense of well-being and transform an outdoor area into an outdoor room.”

AllHome Outdoor
AllHome Outdoor
AllHome Outdoor

Clearly, outdoor areas are being used for purposes that promote physical, social and mental health.

AllHome Outdoor

These include:

  • Having a convenient place to get exposed to enough sunlight to boost vitamin D levels.
  • Providing opportunities for activities that promote eye health such as “screen breaks” – time away from gadgets – and viewing objects at a range of distances – for example, a nearby potted plant and a bird flying at a distance – to manage eyestrain.
  • Having adequate spaces for increased physical activity and movement.
  • Providing opportunities to meditate, be closer to nature to reduce stress.
  • Providing opportunities to spend time with friends and loved ones for fun shared experiences.

When designing or reorganizing your outdoor areas to support your wellness goals, keep the purpose of the spaces top of mind:

  • Exercise. If increasing physical activity is your objective, then consider the size, mobility and storage of fitness equipment that you will include in the space.
  • Socializing. Families and friends come together over good food so aside from your outdoor grill, consider the spaces needed for convenient food preparation, serving and dining. Including gathering points or conversation pieces such as bonfire pits or water features will also help in getting people to gather up and converse.
  • Relaxation and De-stressing. Nature has a way of bringing down stress levels so incorporate nature into your outdoor spaces through greenery, water features, wide open spaces and the materials of your furniture.

Home accents from AllHome to liven up your spaces

Do you sometimes feel reluctant to bring visitors to your home, thinking that they’ll find your place too blah?

When you leaf through lifestyle magazines, do you find yourself wishing your home is as full of pizzazz as those featured in those pages?

While large furniture pieces may be hard to get rid of or replace, you can easily add a home accessory to your space that will totally change its look.

Why accessorize your home?

Similar to how, in fashion, the right accessories add personality to a whole outfit, the right home accents can imbue your spaces with your own style and uniqueness.

Accent pieces can impart a seasonal feel to your decor. By choosing accessories that embody the time of the year, you can bring the changing seasons to your home.

Are you ready to accessorize your home? Here are some sensible rules of thumb to guide your selections:

  • Go for quality over quantity. You don’t need to fill your spaces with as many bric-a-bracs as you can get your hands on. Just go for a few choice pieces that will impart style and uniqueness to your area.
  • Go for pops of color and interesting changes in texture. Accent pieces should add visual interest to the room by providing contrast from large and neutral-colored pieces of furniture.
  • Consider how the pieces fit into the room and with each other. Consider the proportion and scale of the pieces against the space: miniscule figurines in large mantel may just appear like clutter and a large piece of artwork will crowd a small room. To get a feel of how to arrange your accessories, start with the one or two larger pieces (use such items sparingly), then add small ones to fill in the space or achieve balance.

Convert your living room to foster family time

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is to value each moment we spend with our loved ones, especially our family.

However, even our best laid plans for family bonding may get derailed by the demands on our time and attention by responsibilities at work, in school and also in the community.

While the pandemic has forced us to adapt to a new way of living by converting rooms in our house to enable us to work and learn at home, we also need to remember that the home is primarily a place for the family.

All Home
All Home

The home should therefore have a designated space that foster family togetherness and bonding.

If the past few months have seen you painstakingly rearranging and buying furniture and accessories to convert existing spaces into your home office, a study area for the kids and even a home gym, then the same effort should be expended in building a space where the family can comfortably spend time together.

How about transitioning your living room into a family room?

All Home
All Home

These room concepts may seem interchangeable, the core purpose of these spaces differ significantly. Living rooms are display spaces with a more formal atmosphere for welcoming and entertaining guests during special occasions, while family rooms are more casual spaces for household members to convene and relax together.

Let’s face it: our living rooms will not – and should not – see much use for parties and gatherings for the foreseeable future due to the need for physical distancing.

Now then is the best time to convert that space into one that’s more suited for family. It won’t necessarily require a massive overhaul, just a few adjustments and rethinking on the purpose and use of some of the room’s elements.

Seating

If seating in a formal living room is geared towards having a good conversation rolling, in a family room, it is more concerned about accommodating all family members to come together to engage in activities.

Multi-seater sofas that can comfortably fit family members who want to watch TV together or just hang out will work best in a family room.

Additional seating such as benches, ottomans and throw pillows will allow more household members to join in on the fun.

Tables

In a formal living room, the center or coffee table anchors the other furniture in the room by being a focal point while also holding refreshments and reading materials. In a family room, it serves as the surface on which the family can engage in joint activities such as board games and puzzles.

Entertainment Center

In some homes, a separate media room is set up to house a large-screen TV and a sound system to make for a superb movie or video game time. However, a media center may be seamlessly integrated into the family room through a TV stand that also houses a gaming console, TV set-top box and other gadgets for the family’s communal entertainment.

Storage and Organization

As the family room is meant to accommodate family members, it should also have a system to house the items that that the family uses while in it.

It would be best for the family room to have shelves and cabinets that can store books, writing materials and games, as well as baskets and trays to organize these items.

So are you ready to glow up your living room space into a family room?

You can shop for your family room essentials at AllHome, the modern Filipino families’ go-to place when it comes to building or renovating their homes.
