Diversity and inclusion are more than just buzzwords; they are critical components of a successful workplace. The Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) recently highlighted these themes at its recent general membership meeting with the theme, “Speak Out, Stand Out: Championing Diversity in Workplace Communication.”

The event was held at the DivinaLaw offices in Makati City and featured key speakers from MullenLowe TREYNA, the agency that won last year’s Grand Anvil Award for the Quezon City Gender and Development Council’s Right to Care Card.

Krystel Ybañez, a Senior Art Director at MullenLowe TREYNA, shared, “We have brave and supportive leaders in the office who encouraged us to make this happen. That’s why diversity, equality, and inclusion are very important in workplace communication.” Leaders should actively support and encourage initiatives that promote these values, setting a positive example for the entire organization.

The charms of In-Room Dining at Holiday Inn Manila Galleria

The Holiday Inn Manila Galleria holds the distinction of being one of the most iconic hotels in Ortigas. It’s been around for thirty-one years, but the best thing about it is that it has recently undergone a transformative restoration, blending timeless elegance with modern functionality. The new design seamlessly balances contemporary style with a soothing ambiance, ensuring guests enjoy a sanctuary of tranquility during their stay.

Together with my foodie friends, I recently enjoyed a memorable overnight stay at Holiday Inn Manila Galleria as part of our #AWeekendThatNeverEnds experience. Our spacious 2-bedroom suite was so comfy, we were reluctant to leave its comforts, so we stayed in and ordered room service for our late-night dinner, which is quite a new experience for our group.

Our in-room dining experience

The Holiday Inn Manila Galleria boasts an expansive in-room dining menu, accessible via a QR code provided in the room. It features tasty appetizers, salads, soups, and various cuisines, including Asian, Indian, Healthy, Pizzas and Pastas, and Western.

After agreeing on getting classic Filipino comfort food for our first dinner during our staycation, we simply called up the hotel’s Food and Beverage department and placed our orders. In just a few minutes, our feast was wheeled into our room, carried by friendly and professional staff who ensured everything was perfectly set up for us. (He even gamely posed for our photos and videos!)

Given the busy day we had, we opted to eat family-style in the suite’s well-appointed dining area, clad in our plush hotel bathrobes and sleepwear for maximum comfort, sharing our Filipino food feast. Our spread included:

Salmon in Tamarind Miso Broth (Php856.31). Grilled salmon fillet and salmon head with creamy taro mash, baby red radish, and tender bok choi, immersed in flavorful tamarind miso broth, served with a side of white rice. It’s perfect for one of our group who was feeling under the weather.

Bagnet Kare-Kare (Php759.62). Crispy pork belly complemented by a rich peanut sauce, paired with summer vegetables and bagoong, served with a side of white rice. Who says you can’t enjoy this sumptuous dish while lounging in your hotel room?

Thrice-Cooked Crispy Pork Belly (Php690.57). Crispy pork crackling, atchara, and lechon sauce, served with white rice. A classic Filipino ulam that’s always a hit!

Grilled Chicken Inasal (Php376.78). Marinated grilled chicken fillet served with atchara, calamansi, and soy sauce, served with white rice.

Pancit con Chicharones (Php546.93). What can possibly beat the classic Pinoy-style stir-fried noodles and veggies topped with decadent pork crackling?

Seasonal Fresh Fruits (Php486.16). A vibrant selection of sliced local fresh fruits – pineapple, honeydew, and watermelon – for our dessert. Quite a welcome break from the usual sugar-rush we get from our usual post-meal cakes and pastries.

I can definitely say that the privacy and comfort of dining in-room are unparalleled. Unlike eating out, we could enjoy our meal in our bathrobes and jammies, chatting and laughing without any interruptions. The sheer flexibility of also allowed us to eat at our own pace, taking as long as we pleased so we can catch up and swap stories. We didn’t even have to worry about cleanup; the staff came back to take away our used plates and put leftovers in take-away boxes (because we don’t like food waste!).

Plus – and this is a big deal for us foodies! – we were so at home in our surroundings, taking our awra shots, posing with the food and all sorts of shenanigans that foodies do as they create their content, with no fear of judgement as we’re all among friends. This made our in-room dining experience all the more enjoyable.

Is in-room dining for you?

Even if you’re not part of a gaggle of food content creators like I was, you might also find in-room dining suitable in these situations:

Late Arrival or Early Departure. If you arrived late at night or are leaving early in the morning and can’t get to an open restaurant. It’s also a wise choice if you’re dealing with jet lag.
Privacy and Intimacy. If you’re part of a couple celebrating a romantic occasion, like an anniversary or honeymoon, you may prefer the privacy and intimacy of in-room dining.
Business Travelers: Traveling for work? You might need to maximize your time for meetings or work. In-room dining is a convenient option as you can eat while you work.
Families with Young Children. Parents, let’s face it: the little ones can be quite a handful, especially in restaurants, right? Dining in-room gets rid of all that stress and hassle.

Step into the Omniverse, the metro’s ultimate pop culture museum

Imagine a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, where you can step into the worlds of your favorite movies, TV shows, and comics. Welcome to the Omniverse Museum, a captivating pop culture haven located in the heart of Makati, Philippines. This unique museum offers a magical journey through alternate realities and parallel dimensions, with interactive exhibits and mind-bending installations that bring your wildest fandom dreams to life.

This Saturday afternoon, I decided to take my boys – Dear Hubby, our son and our nephew – to Omniverse. Let me tell you about my family’s foray into this pop culture haven.

The Birth of a Pop Culture Wonderland

The Omniverse Museum opened its doors to the public on March 8, and since then, it has become a must-visit destination for fans of all ages. The brainchild of Ryan Sison, an avid collector and journalist, this museum is a testament to his 20-year passion for pop culture memorabilia. Partnering with the Philippine Amusement and Entertainment Corporation, Sison has created a space that is not only visually stunning but also educational.

Ryan’s collection, which began with action figures and comics, grew to include life-sized statues and rare artifacts. Faced with the challenges of space and the stigma of collecting, Ryan dreamed of sharing his passion with the world. The Omniverse Museum is the realization of that dream, a place where fans can immerse themselves in the lore and artifacts of their favorite franchises.

Ryan isn’t resting on his laurels, either. He plans to expand the museum’s collection and open more branches in the future. His vision is to keep the Omniverse Museum fresh and exciting for returning visitors, with new exhibits and updates regularly.

Where the fun’s at

Located in Japan Town on the fourth floor of Glorietta 2, Makati, the Omniverse Museum’s entrance stands out amidst the Japanese restaurants and cherry blossom decor. Inspired by the Sentinels from “X-Men: The Animated Series,” the entrance itself is a nod to the museum’s dedication to intricate and thematic design. It’s very much a portal to another world, much like the wardrobe in “The Chronicles of Narnia” or Platform 9¾ in “Harry Potter,” and marks the beginning of my family’s unforgettable adventure.

Inside the Omniverse

As soon as we stepped inside the lobby, staff members assisted us in checking in and securing a locker for my heavy bag (so I don’t have to walk around while lugging my stuff). Our journey began in the Briefing Chamber, where a giant screen presented a hologram version of Ryan Sison, setting the tone for the wondrous journey ahead.

Spread across 3,500 square meters, the museum is divided into more than 20 themed sections or “worlds,” each meticulously curated to transport visitors into different realms. Here are some highlights:

The Star Wars Collection

We journeyed into the galaxy far, far away and we came face to face with droids like C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8, you’ll marvel at busts of Baby Yoda, Darth Vader, and Boba Fett. The interactive Millennium Falcon cockpit offered educational audio and video materials, while exhibits like a model of the Millennium Falcon signed by Harrison Ford and various lightsabers with actor signatures left us giddy with excitement. Of course, we couldn’t miss the life-sized Jabba the Hutt created by Filipino artist Jose Manansala.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Get your wands at the ready when you step into the Great Hall of Hogwarts, complete with floating candles and characters from across the Harry Potter timeline, including The Boy Who Lived (of course!), He-Who-Must-Not-Be Named, Dobby the House-Elf and even Newt Scamander. The attention to detail, particularly in the miniature Hogwarts, will delight any Potterhead, making it a magical experience that reignites the longing for a Hogwarts letter, or at least, an invitation to the next Halloween or Yule feast.

Game of Thrones

Next, enter the world of Westeros. Sit on the Iron Throne and rule over the Seven Kingdoms. You can also check out miniatures of King of the North Jon Snow and Mother of Dragons Danaerys (Stormborn, First of her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, etc, etc), and give good-boy Drogon some well-deserved love (before he engulfs you in dragon-flame).

The Lord of the Rings

Journey right into Middle-Earth to face-off with a fearsome Balrog (nope, he still CANNOT PASS!), check out the iconic displays of Mount Doom and Barad-dûr topped by the Eye of Sauron and peek into a miniature of Rivendell. Gollum fans will be thrilled with three life-sized statues, and exhibits like Sauron’s gauntlet with the One Ring offer a deeper connection to the beloved series.

DC Superheroes

You will find several sections dedicated to the superheroes of DC comics and movies, including a Fortress of Solitude filled with various iterations of the Man of Steel, a snapshot of Themyscira where our favorite Amazonian princess stands guard, as well as the throne room of Atlantis defended by Aquaman and Mera.

When you enter the Bat Cave, you will be surrounded by life-sized figures of various versions of the Caped Crusader, a Batmobile, and Affleck’s Batman suit. The asylum section, with its dimmed prison cell design, houses Batman’s Rogues Gallery of supervillains like Heath Ledger’s Joker, Harley Quinn, and a scary Killer Croc barely restrained behind bars.

Marvel Superheroes

Marvel fans, on the other hand, can step out from magical portals into the Daily Bulgar (our local version of the newspaper Daily Bugle) to rendezvous with Spiderman or assemble with the other Avengers.

Meanwhile, Iron Man takes center stage in The Mechanic, featuring the Hall of Armor with 14 armors, including the Mark 44 Hulkbuster and Iron Patriot.

Anime Heaven

Anime fans shouldn’t feel left out either, as exhibits paying tribute to One Piece, Dragon Ball Z, One Punch Man and Naruto are here as well.

The Horrors

Before you leave, step into a haunted library filled with callbacks to horror-themed movies and shows: from Darkness of Legend (one of Tom Cruise’ first movies), Buffy, Spike and Angel of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hellboy to the Gremlins.

Afterwards, traverse a graveyard populated by terror-inducing characters such as Freddy Krueger, It, Jason Voorhees, Annabelle, as well as the Vampires and Lycans of Underworld… that is, if you dare!

Beyond the optics

The Omniverse Museum isn’t just about visual spectacle; it’s a place of learning. Infographics and interactive activities are sprinkled throughout the exhibits, highlighting the science and technology that underpin these beloved stories. Dr. Lawrence Li Tan, CEO of the Philippine Amusement and Entertainment Corp., emphasized that the museum’s goal is to stimulate imagination and promote learning in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM). It’s a great venue to get stimulate interest among our kiddos for the arts and sciences, isn’t it?

For me, the museum is a place to take part in my various fandoms – from movies and shows that shaped my childhood to pop culture moments that dominate the discussions at the office watercooler. It’s where I can allow my inner fangirl free rein to wonder and live within these wonderful worlds.

Planning to step into the Omniverse yourself? To fully enjoy your visit, be sure wear comfortable shoes and clothes, as the experience can take about two hours or more. Make sure your phone and/or camera is charged and bring a power bank – you’ll be snapping photos non-stop. Engage with the guides in each station (they’re game to provide you with a snippet or two of insider information about the exhibit or even take your photo). Take your time exploring each world, as you won’t be able to return once you’ve moved past a station.

Recently, one of the highlights of my “A Weekend that Never Ends” staycation with foodie friends was the Unli Dim Sum feast at Xin Tian Di, located within the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria.

Xin Tian Di blends the essence of classic Cantonese flavors with a modern twist, resulting in a remarkable dining experience. Its name translates to “New Heaven and Earth,” which encapsulates the restaurant’s innovative approach to Cantonese cuisine. Just as the historical Xintiandi in Shanghai transformed from obscurity to vibrancy, Xin Tian Di reflects the same spirit of renewal and transformation in its culinary offerings under the leadership of its new executive chef David Chu.

Xin Tian Di’s recently updated modern Chinese decor, featuring dark wood furniture with plush seating and intricate designs, soft lighting and elegant red accents, exudes sophistication while creating an inviting atmosphere. Throughout our meal, the quality of service was exceptional. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, enhancing our dining experience. Sharing this feast with friends made it even more enjoyable, as we relished each bite together and discussed our favorite dishes. Standout moments included the surprise of the spicy kick in the Spicy Pork and Shrimp Dumpling and the delightful crunch of the Deep-fried Chinese Bun with Condensed Milk. My friends tried to get me to dig in to the Chicken Feet but I was more into my all-time favorite Hakao, Pork Buns, and, of course, the dessert dumplings.

Cin Tian Di Unli Dimsum — Hot Chamomile Tea

The vast array of dim sum at Xin Tian Di demonstrates the remarkable versatility and creativity inherent in this beloved Chinese culinary tradition. Dim sum clearly encompasses a wide range of small, flavorful dishes that can cater to various tastes and preferences. Xin Tian Di’s extensive 37-dish dimsum menu showcases how this custom can blend classic Cantonese flavors with modern twists, offering a rich tapestry of textures, flavors, and presentations. This not only highlights the adaptability of dim sum to contemporary dining trends but also underscores its ability to continually evolve while retaining its traditional essence.

The Unli Dim Sum experience at Xin Tian Di was a culinary highlight that perfectly complemented our staycation at Holiday Inn Manila Galleria and Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria. After indulging in such a sumptuous feast, we felt so thoroughly satisfied that we were eager to retreat to our suite to recover, hehehe!

Truly, Xin Tian Di’s opulent setting and exquisite food made it an unforgettable part of our weekend.

Bonjour, foodies!

If you’re looking for a getaway from the metro’s hustle and bustle, how about a sojourn to gay Paree?

Located on the fifth floor of the newly opened ibis Styles Manila Araneta City is a French-themed cafe and pattiserie Le Bistro which promises a taste of the City of Lights right in the heart of Cubao, Quezon City.

From the moment we arrived, Le Bistro’s charm was evident. The glass walls allowed natural light to flood the stylish interiors while looking out to the landmark Sagrada Familia Church.

We received a warm welcome and were immediately struck by the inviting atmosphere. With the option to dine al fresco or inside, we chose a cozy spot indoors to enjoy the air-conditioned comfort.

The cafe’s checkerboard floors harken back to the La Belle Epoque while indoor greenery add a sense of freshness to the space. The cafe’s counters showcase the various gastronomic possibilities on offer, ranging from cheeses and charcuterie, an appetizing assortment of French pastries and sandwiches, to delectable artisanal gelato.

During le gouter here, though, bulk of the action was at the coffee bar where the barista expertly crafted our drinks.

The aroma of freshly baked viennoiseries and premium coffee filled the air as we waited for our orders.

And when they did arrive, they certainly did not disappoint.

My husband chose a Cold Macchiato au Caramel (PHP250), a perfect blend of bold espresso and sweet caramel topped with froth. My son, on the other hand, opted for the Le Bistro Hot Chocolate (PHP400), a rich and creamy concoction that suited his sweet tooth.

I went for the Bastille Day Special (PHP215): a flaky Croissant paired with a creamy Café Au Lait. My croissant was crisp on the outside and buttery inside, and the Café Au Lait was smooth and perfectly balanced.

As we enjoyed our drinks and croissant, the staff were attentive and friendly, enhancing the overall experience. Le Bistro’s décor, a blend of modern elegance and classic charm, made it easy to feel like we were in a Parisian café. It was a parfait setting to relax and enjoy our Parisian moment.

Our visit to Le Bistro was more than just a quick snack; it was a brief escape to Paris in the heart of Cubao. The Bastille Day offer of a Croissant and Café Au Lait was a delightful limited-time addition to their menu, and I’m eager return and try more of their French specialties.
