Sun Life donates Php40 million to promote healthier lives among marginalized youth across Asia

Sun Life, a leading financial services company, is set to breathe new life into basketball courts and inspire healthier lifestyles among marginalized youth in communities across Asia with a generous donation of PHP 40 million. This philanthropic initiative, undertaken in partnership with Beyond Sport, a global sport-for-social-change foundation, aims to tackle the alarming rates of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior among children and adolescents in the region.

Answering the Call: Sun Life’s Response to Alarming Health Trends

The drive behind this inspiring endeavor stems from the findings of the 2022 Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance report, sponsored by Sun Life. This comprehensive study shed light on the troubling rise of physical inactivity among Asian youth, contributing to a slew of health issues including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, mental health challenges, and more.

According to the report, several Asian countries, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, scored dismally in terms of overall physical activity, with Hong Kong and Malaysia receiving a grade of ‘D,’ and Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam falling into the ‘F’ category. This means that fewer than 20% of children ages 6 to 17 are achieving an average of at least 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity throughout the week.

Sun Life Chief Client Experience and Marketing Officer, Carla Gonzalez-Chong, remarked, “Promoting movement is an important aspect of Sun Life’s health and wellness advocacy. We constantly explore fun and engaging ways to promote it among Filipinos, especially the youth. For this particular initiative, we took inspiration in our country’s love for basketball so we can encourage everyone to make physical activity a part of their lifestyle.”

Beyond Sport: A Collaborative Approach for Positive Change

Beyond Sport Executive Director, Fred Turner, emphasized that young people worldwide face barriers to accessing sports and the multitude of benefits it offers. Often, these barriers boil down to having a safe space to move and play. “We are proud to partner with Sun Life to improve physical and mental wellbeing outcomes for marginalized youth. We hope this program, built with community and sustainability in mind, will help them develop life-long habits that will allow them to thrive.”

#MovementMatters Gains Momentum

The ambitious initiative aligns seamlessly with Sun Life’s #MovementMatters campaign, which champions physical activity as a pivotal component of healthier living.

The campaign was launched with great enthusiasm through a 3×3 charity event held simultaneously in Manila and Jakarta, Indonesia, from August 18 to 20. In Manila, the “Sun Life 3×3 Charity Challenge” took place at SM Megamall, boasting a participation of 349 individuals, including celebrities and basketball influencers such as Gab Banal, Ael Banal, Brent Javier, Jollo Go, Andre Felix, Thor Gomez, Brent Paraiso, John Custodio, Axel Torres, Pat Sugui, Kirst Viray, Ralph Molina Martin Reyes, Miguel Aytona, Hendrix Jim, and Martin Javier.

Sun Life’s commitment to the cause was evident as they pledged PHP 4,000 for every participant in both Manila and Jakarta. Moreover, for every like, share, comment, and post on social media with the hashtag #MovementMatters, they contributed to a cumulative donation of PHP 40 million.

The event also dovetailed with the participation of Team Canada and its top players in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup taking place in Manila, with Sun Life serving as the Official Health & Wellness Partner of Canada Basketball.

“We’re thrilled about the momentum we’ve set for the #MovementMatters campaign and look forward to everyone’s continued support,” exclaimed Gonzalez-Chong. “With our concerted efforts, we can certainly help more people live healthier lives.”

Sun Life’s substantial contribution and dedication to fostering healthier futures for Asia’s marginalized youth exemplify the positive impact that corporate social responsibility can have on communities across the continent.

Exploring the Philippines with Airbnb: A Rising Trend Among Southeast Asian Travelers

In a world reshaped by the pandemic, travel has taken on a new dimension. As borders reopen and adventurers eagerly dust off their passports, Southeast Asia is witnessing an intriguing phenomenon. Airbnb, a pioneer in redefining travel experiences, is revealing compelling trends that showcase a fervent interest in the Philippines among Southeast Asian travelers.

Chinese Wanderlust: A Philippines Affair

Year-on-Year Surges in Chinese Travelers’ Interest

China’s resurgence in international travel has sent ripples of excitement through the Southeast Asian region. The Philippines, with its stunning landscapes and warm hospitality, has become an alluring gem for Chinese tourists. Airbnb’s latest data unveils a staggering tenfold increase in guest searches among Chinese travelers year-on-year. It seems the allure of pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history has captured the hearts of our neighbors to the north.

Domestic Travel’s Remarkable Comeback

Philippines: A Domestic Travel Hotspot

As international travel regains its footing in Southeast Asia, domestic tourism is proving to be an unwavering favorite among locals. The Philippines, in particular, has witnessed a remarkable resurgence in local wanderlust. In 2022, the number of nights booked on Airbnb more than doubled compared to 2020. The archipelago was proudly crowned as the #1 travel destination for Filipino travelers in 2022.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, emphasized the significance of domestic tourism. “A weekend trip to a nearby destination is not only easier to plan but also much more affordable. Airbnb has played a pivotal role in supporting domestic tourism by offering a diverse range of affordable accommodations in new and exciting locations. This allows our guests to explore a multitude of destinations they might have never considered before.”

Unlocking Hidden Treasures: A Global Trend

From Popular to Lesser-Known: The Airbnb Effect

In 2022, Airbnb’s global guests ventured into over 100,000 different cities and towns. Interestingly, the top 10 most-visited destinations accounted for just 7 percent of all trips, down from 10 percent in 2019. Airbnb’s travelers are increasingly turning their gaze away from the well-trodden paths, expanding their horizons into lesser-known communities.

Since March 2020, more than 13,000 towns and cities worldwide received their inaugural Airbnb booking. In the Philippines, this trend is no exception. Over 900 new towns and cities have experienced their first-ever Airbnb bookings, marking a significant shift toward more diverse travel experiences.

Flexibility Breeds Exploration

A Novel Way to Explore

One standout revelation is Airbnb’s flexible search features, which empower travelers to break away from the tourist hordes. Data shows that guests using these features are markedly less likely to stay in the most popular destinations on Airbnb. Approximately 1 in 20 stays on Airbnb are now booked using flexible search. Globally, flexible bookers are about 23 percent less likely to choose the top 20 destinations on Airbnb.

Amanpreet Bajaj underscored the importance of this shift, saying, “Distributed travel is affordable, bolsters local economies and jobs, and immerses people in communities. Airbnb is committed to dispersing guests, income, and tourism benefits beyond the usual hotspots to new and trending destinations. We acknowledge the challenges posed by mass tourism globally and are investing in solutions to mitigate these while introducing our guests to fresh communities and income streams for locals.”

In a world where travel is no longer just a journey but a transformative experience, Airbnb continues to be at the forefront, redefining how we explore our world, one destination at a time.

About Airbnb

Born in 2007 from the warm embrace of two hosts welcoming three guests into their San Francisco home, Airbnb has since blossomed into a global phenomenon. With over 4 million dedicated hosts opening their doors to more than 1.5 billion guest arrivals across the globe, Airbnb has made it possible for travelers to forge authentic connections with communities worldwide. Every day, Airbnb offers unique stays and experiences that redefine the essence of travel.

As the world continues to evolve, so does the way we explore it, and Airbnb is leading the way. So, whether you’re a traveler or a host, remember, your next adventure is just a click away.

Enrolling Your Child in School: A helpful handbook for first-time parents

Wow, your little one is now ready for school – congratulations!

Enrolling your child in school is a significant milestone, and you can just imagine how the whole experience can be both exciting and overwhelming. As you embark on this unfamiliar terrain, do keep in mind these helpful tips and friendly guidance to ensure a smooth and successful enrollment process for you and your child.

But first, let’s answer some common questions for parents whose kids are entering school age:

Can I enroll my child in school without a birth certificate in the Philippines?

A birth certificate is a crucial document required for school enrollment in the Philippines. It serves as proof of your child’s identity and age, and schools typically need it for their records. If you don’t have a birth certificate yet, don’t worry! You can obtain one from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) or the Local Civil Registry where your child was born.

Your child’s birth certificate is an important document to have, especially when enrolling your child to school for the first time. It’s essential to get the process of acquiring official copies of this document started early to avoid any last-minute hassles.

What age can a child start school in the Philippines?

In the Philippines, the official age requirement for kindergarten enrollment is usually five years old. However, some schools might have flexibility for children who are just a few months younger or older. As a parent, you have the freedom to choose what you believe is best for your child based on their readiness and development.

If your child is slightly younger, you might consider enrolling them in a pre-school or early childhood program to help ease the transition into formal schooling. On the other hand, if your child is a bit older and has already shown signs of readiness, you can explore schools that have age-appropriate classes for them.

What do parents need to prepare when enrolling their child in school for the first time?

To ensure a seamless enrollment process, here’s a handy checklist of essential items and steps you’ll need to gear up for:

  1. Gather the necessary documents. Make sure you have your child’s birth certificate, vaccination records, and any other identification documents required by the school.
  2. Research and choose the right school. Consider factors such as the school’s location, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and facilities. A school visit or orientation can give you a feel for the environment and help you make an informed decision.
  3. Emotional preparation. Preparing your child emotionally for this new chapter is just as important as the practical aspects. Talk to your child about starting school, share positive experiences, and reassure them that it’s a fun and exciting place to learn and make friends.
Preparing ahead for your child’s enrollment

To help you and your little one stay organized and ready before the big day, follow these tips for a stress-free enrollment:

  1. Create a checklist. Compile a list of all the items your child will need, such as school supplies, uniforms, and a backpack. Some of these may be available in the school or in stores outside the campus. Tick off items as you purchase them to avoid missing anything.
  2. Arrange school visits. Reach out to the school to schedule a visit or inquire about orientation sessions. This will allow your child to familiarize themselves with the new surroundings and ease any anxiety they might have.
  3. Establish routines. In the weeks leading up to school, gradually adjust your child’s daily routine to mimic a school schedule such as waking up early, homework or study time and limiting time spent watching TV or using electronic devices. This will help them adapt more easily when school starts.

Enrolling your child in school is an exciting and important step in their journey of learning and growth. As first-time parents, the mix of emotions you might be experiencing is perfectly understandable. Remember that you’re not alone, and with proper preparation, your child’s transition to school can be a positive and enriching experience.

Red Horse Beer a rising star in the inaugural Kantar BrandZ Top 30 Southeast Asian Brands report

The Kantar BrandZ Top 30 Southeast Asian Brands report has just been released, and there’s exciting news for the Philippines – San Miguel Brewery’s Red Horse has been ranked among the most powerful brands in the entire region! This prestigious ranking covers six Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, tech lover, or retail connoisseur, this report has something for everyone looking to explore the best brands that Southeast Asia has to offer.

A Powerful Lineup of Brands

Southeast Asia boasts an impressive lineup of brands across various industries. Financial Services and Telecom Providers dominate the list, making up two-thirds of all the brands in the region. Notably, Indonesia’s Bank Central Asia (BCA) takes the crown as the most powerful brand. Telecom Providers are also well-represented, with nine brands securing their place on the list, followed closely by Retail and Travel Services.

But what sets Red Horse apart from the competition? Not only does it proudly represent the Philippines as the only local brand in the top 30, but it also stands out as the top beer brand in the country. Cheers to that!

Demand Power: Connecting with Local Consumers

One of the critical factors driving the success of Southeast Asian brands is their unmatched Demand Power. This measure, developed by Kantar BrandZ, evaluates a brand’s ability to connect with consumers and influence their purchasing decisions. Among all the markets with a Kantar BrandZ ranking, Southeast Asian brands have proven to be the most adept at sparking consumer interest and loyalty.

Katie McClintock, Managing Director of Southeast Asia at Kantar, attributes the region’s leading brands’ success to their adaptability and responsiveness to ever-changing consumer needs. With such a diverse and rapidly growing market, the Top 30 brands have mastered the art of staying relevant. If they can extend their local strengths to other Asian and global markets, the potential for significant growth is enormous.

The Power of Purpose in the Philippines

In the Philippines, top brands have mastered the art of delivering brand purpose effectively. This approach has cultivated deep trust and emotional connections with consumers. Soumya Saklani, Managing Director of the Philippines at Kantar, emphasizes that beyond traditional trust built on expertise, Philippine brands now prioritize making positive changes and improving the world in ways that resonate with consumers.

As we emerge from the pandemic, consumers’ newly acquired habits are here to stay. Thus, it’s essential for brands to seamlessly integrate into their daily lives and anticipate their needs. Despite the challenging economic landscape, consumers are willing to pay for brands that lead the way in meeting their expectations.

Trending Insights from the Top 30 Brands

The Kantar BrandZ report reveals several fascinating trends among Southeast Asia’s most valuable brands:

  • Trust Matters: Southeast Asia’s brands are the second most trusted in the world, and Indomie leads the pack in the Top 30, delighting consumers with familiar tastes loved for generations.
  • Relevance is Key: Brands perceived as fitting well into everyday life enjoy almost double the Demand Power compared to their less relevant peers. Malaysia’s Grab platform shines as the most relevant, offering a comprehensive range of services that cater to daily needs.
  • Sustainability as a Driver: Consumers are increasingly expecting businesses to take a leading role in addressing environmental and social issues. Brands with outstanding sustainability credentials have a significant advantage in the market.

Discovering Southeast Asia’s Finest Brands

The inaugural Kantar BrandZ Top 30 Southeast Asian Brands ranking provides a comprehensive analysis of the region’s most powerful brands. A Teishoku Feast at Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant

Despite having diverse personal interests, my husband’s and my tastes do converge when it comes to food, and one of our favorite cuisines, of course, is Japanese food.

Having espied an erstwhile untried Japanese restaurant as we were running some errands in Eastwood Mall, we decided on having our lunch there. That establishment is Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant, a Japanese chain that specializes in teishoku, or Japanese set meals.

Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant
Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant

What is Teishoku?

Teishoku (定食) is a Japanese set meal that typically consists of rice, miso soup, a main dish, and a side dish or two. The main dish can be anything from grilled fish to tempura to curry, and the side dishes can vary depending on the restaurant. Some common side dishes include pickled vegetables, tofu, and salad.

Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant

Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant is a Japanese restaurant chain that was founded in 1886 in Tokyo, Japan. The chain has since expanded to over 350 locations in Japan, as well as to other countries such as the United States, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

The concept of Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant is to provide affordable and delicious Japanese food in a casual and comfortable setting. The menu features a variety of teishoku dishes, as well as other Japanese favorites such as sushi, sashimi, and ramen. Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant also offers a variety of bento boxes, which are perfect for a quick and easy meal on the go.

Our Experience at Yayoi Teishoku Restaurant

Having arrived prior to the rush of the lunch crowd, we were able to secure our table right away. The restaurant is has a decidedly modern Asian decor, combining Japanese elements such as a cherry blossom-themed central mural and pine-wood furniture with geometric space dividers.

Customers can use the tablet to place their orders, request for their bill, as well as to make requests for assistance from the restaurant staff. This system allows customers to order their food quickly and easily, and it also frees up the waitstaff to focus on other tasks, such as refilling drinks and clearing tables.

Our orders included:

Sun Life unveils sustainability agenda with Financial Independence Month

In celebration of the Philippines’ independence this June, Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc. has unveiled its sustainability agenda, reaffirming its commitment to helping Filipinos achieve financial freedom and brighter lives.

Sun Life’s Long-standing Commitment to Sustainability

For over 128 years, Sun Life has prioritized sustainability not only within its Philippine office but also as part of the global organization. Benedict Sison, CEO & Country Head of Sun Life Philippines, emphasized the company’s alignment with sustainability goals and its engagement in philanthropic and environmental initiatives. He stated, “As a life insurance and asset management business, we are naturally aligned with sustainability goals apart from pursuing philanthropic and environmental projects.”

Aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Sun Life’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated through initiatives that support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The company focuses on areas where it can have the most positive social and environmental impact, including Increasing Financial Security, Fostering Healthier Lives, Advancing Sustainable Investing, Operating as a Trusted and Responsible Business, and Uplifting Communities. Sun Life’s sustained advocacy for these causes is showcased on their sustainability journey page, available at www.sunlife.co/SustainabilityPH.

Sison highlighted Sun Life’s dedication to creating a positive impact and empowering Filipinos to achieve financial security and healthier living for future generations. He said, “We aspire for our people and our solutions to make a difference in Filipino lives, empowering them to achieve financial security and healthier living for generations to come.”

Financial Independence Month: Empowering Filipinos

Continuing its mission to enhance financial security among Filipinos, Sun Life is once again celebrating June as Financial Independence Month. The company aims to empower individuals through relevant and engaging content that conveys the message, “Freedom starts with a choice. Kaya mo ‘yan!” (You can do it!)

Carla Gonzalez-Chong, Chief Client Experience and Marketing Officer of Sun Life, emphasized the significance of Financial Independence Month, stating, “Our rallying cry for this year shows our confidence in the Filipinos’ power to bring their goals to life.” She expressed Sun Life’s commitment to support individuals on their journey towards financial freedom and the vision of helping Filipinos achieve lifetime financial security.

Inspiring Short Films and Learning Modules

To inspire and motivate individuals, Sun Life has produced four short films created by its in-house team of young creatives. These films share heartwarming stories of Filipinos who made the choice to take control of their future and realize their goals:

  • “Sinag” by Mei Solis tells the story of a daughter struggling to connect with her Overseas Filipino mother until they discover a shared goal of being together for good.
  • “Kulay” by Casey Borja explores the world of a child on the autism spectrum who brings hope to his business-owner father during a crucial time.
  • “Ngayon at Bukas” by JC Manzano depicts the struggle of a son in search of his path, which unexpectedly leads him to his father’s humble barber shop.
  • “Para Sa Akin” by Bea Aguilera humorously portrays how a string of bad luck can ironically lead to finding a bright partner.

Starting from June 19, these films will be available on www.sunlife.co/KayaMoYan. Complementing the films, Sun Life is offering free learning modules for individuals seeking to build their financial portfolio. The message will be further amplified through content on Sun Life’s social platforms, including @SunLifePH on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Sustaining a More Sustainable Future

Sison affirmed Sun Life’s commitment as a partner in achieving a more sustainable future for Filipinos. He expressed appreciation for the progress made thus far and eagerly anticipated future milestones, with the goal of enabling more individuals to experience the freedom of living brighter.
