IHG Hotels & Resorts joins forces with Action Against Hunger to combat global food insecurity

IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, recently announced a new multi-year partnership with global NGO Action Against Hunger. This collaboration aims to support the organization’s crucial work in combating food insecurity and hunger affecting millions worldwide.

The Partnership

In this new venture, IHG Hotels & Resorts commits to a multi-year partnership, providing vital support and funding for Action Against Hunger’s nutrition programs. A particular emphasis will be placed on screening initiatives designed to identify early signs of malnutrition in children, offering lifesaving treatment through local community outreach programs.

The Problem

Globally, one in three people are unsure where their next meal will come from. Factors like poverty, conflict, inefficient food systems, and climate change exacerbate this issue. IHG, with its extensive presence across more than 100 countries, has long been involved in improving food security, disaster relief efforts, and skills training as part of their “Journey to Tomorrow” responsible business plan, aiming to better the lives of 30 million people.

Impact and Goals

IHG will raise awareness of food insecurity among its millions of guests worldwide, offering them the chance to donate IHG One Rewards points to support the cause. For instance, every 10,000 points donated can screen approximately 124 children for malnutrition, a crucial first step towards providing the necessary care. On average, 7,500 points can support a malnourished child with nutritious food for six weeks, helping them return to health.

“Food sits at the heart of our hotels and hospitality, nourishing people and communities. Sadly, we know it remains in desperately short supply for millions, despite enough being produced to feed everyone on the planet,” said Elie Maalouf, CEO of IHG Hotels & Resorts. “This is a problem the world can solve if societies, organizations, and businesses work together. IHG Hotels & Resorts is proud to partner with Action Against Hunger on their lifesaving work, in addition to the many other long-standing partnerships we have with incredible charities in local markets. Collectively, we want to help create lasting change in a world where people are nourished, always welcome, and always respected.”

Ashwini Kakkar, Chair of Action Against Hunger International Network, added, “While hunger is a widespread challenge, for the first time in human history, we have the ability to end chronic hunger for everyone, for good. Realizing that vision will take bold action, and we are grateful for IHG’s will, wisdom, and leadership in advancing this vital cause. Hunger makes it harder for hundreds of millions of people around the world to learn, work, dream, and realize their full potential. IHG’s generous support will help advance our work to create a world where every life is well nourished.”

IHG’s Broader Commitment

This partnership is part of IHG’s broader mission to provide True Hospitality for Good. It complements existing collaborations aimed at strengthening community food systems— from offering training and tools to reduce food waste to diverting surplus food to those in need. IHG’s other food security partnerships include local food banks, No Kid Hungry in the US, OzHarvest in Australia, VietHarvest in Vietnam, and Too Good To Go in Europe.

IHG Hotels & Resorts invites guests and stakeholders to join this vital cause. By donating IHG One Rewards points, everyone can contribute to a world where no one has to worry about their next meal. Together, we can make a significant impact on global hunger, ensuring that everyone, everywhere, is well-nourished and thriving.

SB19 declares “Atin ‘to!” as the new faces of Chicken McDo

Filipino supergroup SB19 has joined forces with McDonald’s Philippines to promote the new and improved Chicken McDo, bringing excitement to both fast food lovers and the group’s dedicated fan base, A’tin. The P-Pop sensation, comprising Pablo, Ken, Stell, Josh, and Justin, proudly declares “Atin ‘to!” (“This is ours”) in their latest endorsement, marking a significant collaboration in the fast-food industry.

SB19’s rise to fame has been meteoric. They became the first Filipino and Southeast Asian act nominated for the Billboard Music Awards’ Top Social Artist category, establishing their prominence on the global stage. Now, they follow in the footsteps of other notable McDonald’s endorsers, such as Vice Ganda, who helped relaunch Chicken McDo to great acclaim last year, and Kapuso royalty Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, who created a viral sensation with their musical extravaganza featuring Chicken McDo’s “dinosaur-size” portions.

“We’re ecstatic to welcome SB19 to the McDonald’s Philippines family. To have this supergroup join us in showing love for our much bigger, much juicier, much crispier and much sulit Chicken McDo is very exciting,” said Adi Timbol-Hernandez, McDonald’s Philippines’ Assistant Vice President for Corporate Relations and Impact. “It’s a great collaboration, and we look forward to working with SB19 in delivering more feel-good moments to our customers all over the country. Definitely, there’s much more to look forward to in this campaign.”

The official announcement followed a teaser campaign on McDonald’s Philippines’ social media pages, hinting at a new “Ninang” for their next endorser. Loyal A’tin fans quickly guessed the upcoming endorsement, and their excitement was rewarded with an exclusive video featuring a specially-written single by SB19. The song showcased the band’s love for Chicken McDo and encouraged their fans to embrace it as their own.

Margot Torres, McDonald’s Philippines Managing Director, emphasized the synergy between the two icons: “It’s a perfect fit: McDonald’s with SB19. A global icon partners with the first P-Pop band to make a worldwide breakthrough. We’re proud to be working with them in sharing the great news about our Bigger and Better Chicken McDo. Parami nang parami ang in-love sa Chicken McDo and we’re very happy to welcome SB19, the A’TIN community, and many more into the golden arches of McDonald’s.”

The “Atin ‘to Chicken McDo” campaign is a celebration of what’s uniquely Filipino. Raoul Panes, Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett Group Manila and Publicis Groupe Philippines, explained, “We landed on this ‘Atin ‘to Chicken McDo’ idea with inspiration from SB19 and their loyal, passionate A’TIN fanbase. It took several months of hard work to birth this campaign. Our SB19 fans in the team helped shape the idea and execution to what you see now. And our collaboration with the SB19 team made the outcome even better. Truly ‘Atin ‘to’ for the many creative minds who shared their talents and the many who love the campaign.”

Directed by Film Pabrika’s Joel Limchoc, the 60-second film features vibrant, pop-inspired scenes representing various Filipino demographics, all enjoying Chicken McDo with a touch of swag and Pinoy pride. Limchoc shared his experience, stating, “Josh, Pablo, Stell, Ken, and Justin were a dream to work with, very professional. I’m a fan!”

A sweet suite staycation at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria

A staycation is always a refreshing break from the routine, and our recent getaway to Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria was no exception. As part of the “Weekend That Never Ends” concept, this experience was designed to blend leisure and business seamlessly, making it perfect for our group of foodie friends and content creators.

From well-appointed accommodations to exciting dining options and convenient access to nearby attractions, our staycation was a delightful escape from the everyday hustle.

The Concept of “A Weekend That Never Ends”

The “Weekend That Never Ends” is more than just a catchy name; it’s a thoughtfully crafted experience that bridges leisure and business. By connecting Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria with its sister hotel, Holiday Inn Manila Galleria, the concept offers a smooth transition between relaxation and work. For us, this meant enjoying a relaxing stay without the hassle of changing locations or reorienting ourselves between activities.

A Weekend That Never Ends
A Weekend That Never Ends

This integrated approach provides a host of benefits. We were able to enjoy the combined amenities of both hotels, from recreational facilities to diverse dining options. The prime location in the Ortigas Business District added to the convenience, putting us close to shopping, dining, and entertainment venues.

As one of the metro’s premiere business hotel, Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria is quite striking with its elegant contemporary design. Having previously organized and attended events in the hotel’s various function rooms, I had always admired the venue’s refined style, delicious catering and excellent service. Finally being able to stay here as a guest was an exciting prospect.

Our Suite Experience

We were accommodated in two newly refreshed adjoining one-bedroom suites. These suites shared a common anteroom with its own powder room, providing a comfortable and private space for our group to gather and catch up. The living area was equipped with a TV, a stocked minibar, and an office desk, making it a versatile space for both relaxation and work.

The first suite was a corner room featuring a king-size bed and a separate bath with a walk-in shower. The second suite had two twin beds and its own bath with a walk-in shower. Both rooms offered stunning views through floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking Ortigas Avenue and the surrounding mountains.

Comfort was a priority, and the suites delivered. They were fully air-conditioned and equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, ensuring we stayed connected throughout our stay. The combination of modern amenities and thoughtful touches made the suites a perfect retreat.

Culinary Adventures

Our staycation was not just about the luxurious rooms; the dining options at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria were a highlight of our experience. We had the chance to explore a variety of culinary delights:

Seven Corners Restaurant

This international buffet is renowned for its seven interactive stations offering cuisines from around the world. From Italian and Japanese to Indian and Western, the array of options was impressive. I particularly enjoyed the Prime Rib steaks which were grilled to perfection, the fresh seafood cooked in buttery garlic sauce and indulged my sweet tooth at the dessert station, which had a tempting selection of treats.

We haven’t had the need to use its on-site Business Center, but the hotel provides what business travelers need such as copying/printing and scanning services as well as office supplies.

Nearby Activities and Attractions

Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria’s location in the Ortigas Business District provided us with ample opportunities for exploration and leisure. MMDC and Globe Prepaid’s Step Up Sessions empower working students in upskilling for free

Balancing work, school, and personal growth can feel like an uphill battle for many young working students. The demands of earning a living while pursuing higher education and trying to advance in your career can be overwhelming. But what if there was a way to upskill for free and gain valuable insights from industry leaders without adding to your financial burden? Enter the Step Up Sessions, a collaborative initiative by Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC) and Globe Prepaid, designed to empower working students to elevate their careers and lives.

The Birth of the Step Up Sessions

Launched under the Step Up sa Pangarap movement, the Step Up Sessions aim to provide working students with the support and resources they need to excel both academically and professionally. Hosted on the immersive GoHUSTLE digital interactive platform of the Globe Hangouts portal, these sessions offer six free upskilling talks featuring top industry leaders.

“At MMDC, we are driven by our commitment to the Step Up sa Pangarap movement. It’s a mission designed to inspire and empower working students across the country and the globe. We firmly believe that reaching your dreams begins with a progressive college education that prepares you for the demands of the modern workplace,” said Jenny Chua, MMDC’s Vice President for Marketing and Admissions, during the inaugural Step Up Session.

Empowering Leadership and Personal Growth

The first Step Up Session, held on June 4, focused on leadership, with Jannette Toral, founder of DigitalFilipino.com and co-founder of i-Metrics Asia Pacific Corporation, sharing her expertise. Toral emphasized the importance of three core values: encouraging others, embracing change, and strategic thinking.

TORAL

“You have to know yourself to grow yourself,” Toral stated, highlighting that self-awareness is crucial for effective leadership. She provided a simple framework to help participants build confidence, set achievable goals, and take initiative. “Remember that you have to see value in yourself first before you add value to others,” she added.

The Power of Technology in Business

Neil Dimapilis, digital marketer and founder of Social Media Marketing Philippines (SMMPH), led the second talk, discussing the value of technology in business. He explained how integrating technology can streamline tasks, increase efficiency, and enable data-driven decision-making.

“Knowing which (technology) to use is just the start,” Dimapilis noted. “Training people to use them and learning how to maximize it is the rest of the battle.” He stressed the importance of choosing the right tools and effectively training team members to ensure optimal use and satisfaction.

Creating Meaningful Content and Personal Branding

On June 20, the second Step Up Session delved into personal branding and content creation. Alec Cuenca, podcaster, motivational speaker, and content creator, shared his insights on building a successful personal brand. He introduced the 7-hour Content System and encouraged participants to continually create and refine their content.

CUENCA

“The Hook is the first few seconds of the video and grabs the attention of viewers,” Cuenca explained, outlining the structure for creating viral content. He emphasized the importance of a growth mindset and the role of technology in expanding one’s influence.

Following Cuenca, digital marketer Jessica Madrazo discussed alternative ways to monetize creative skills, such as selling photos, videos, and designs. “It doesn’t just take a lot of creativity and talent. It also takes a lot of discipline and consistency,” Madrazo said, highlighting the need for dedication and perseverance in the creative industry.

Financial Literacy and Independence

The third Step Up Session, held on July 4, focused on financial literacy. Chester Catilago, MMDC Shared Services Director, opened the session by stressing the importance of managing finances effectively. “In today’s world, to know how to manage your finances is essential. Whether it’s budgeting, investing, saving, or planning for the future, these skills are vital for personal and professional success,” he said.

Mariel Bitanga-Kintanar, founder of Simply Finance and Director of Business Development and Partnerships of Paywatch, provided practical advice on financial management. “It’s never too late or too early to work on our money just like your studies,” she said, encouraging participants to start their financial journey immediately.

Kintanar shared tips on cultivating a healthy relationship with money, including practicing gratitude, changing limiting beliefs, and surrounding oneself with positive influences. She also discussed creating a financial game plan, managing a budget, and investing wisely. “Small steps done consistently will really add up to the improvement of your financial life,” she advised.

The Community and Support Network

One of the most significant benefits of the Step Up Sessions is the sense of community and support they foster. Participants like Shekinah Florentino and Maja Samaniego have found the sessions to be incredibly motivating and empowering.

“I found the Step Up Sessions to be very motivating, as it focused on important values and skills that will be essential for my future career,” Florentino shared. Samaniego added, “So far, Step Up Sa Pangarap has done wonders for my confidence as a young freelancer. The community has also been invaluable in providing not only a sense of camaraderie and support, but also the resources to go forward at your own pace, in your own time.”

The Step Up Sessions by MMDC and Globe Prepaid offer a comprehensive, free resource for young working students to upskill and advance their careers. From leadership and technology to personal branding and financial literacy, these sessions provide valuable insights and practical tools for personal and professional growth.

Are you ready to take the next step in your career? Join the upcoming Step Up Session on August 15 from 7pm to 9pm. Create an account on the Globe Hangouts portal and register for the sessions to start your journey towards a brighter future. And if you’re considering furthering your education, applications for MMDC’s school year 2024 to 2025 are ongoing, with Term 1 starting in August 2024. Apply now and step up towards your dreams!

Insider tips for an experience you’ll adore at Azadore

One of the greatest perks of being a foodie is the joy of discovering hidden culinary gems and sharing insider tips about favorite restaurants. Azadore, the latest venture by celebrity chef and internationally awarded author Myke “Tatung” Sarthou, is one such gem nestled in Quezon City. With its unique blend of homey nostalgia and modern culinary excellence, Azadore is not just a restaurant but an experience waiting to be savored.

I’ve previously enjoyed its unique charms before when I dined here with my officemates and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to explore more of its Spanish-themed menu during a recent get-together with my foodie friends.

And now, I can share some tidbits to help you have an experiences you’ll definitely adore at Azadore.

The Origin Story

Chef Tatung’s vision for Azadore is deeply rooted in his childhood memories and Cebuano heritage. The concept of Azadore draws inspiration from family gatherings at his grandparents’ house, where the aroma of grilled meats filled the air, and everyone contributed their signature dishes to the feast. The name itself is a playful combination of “asador,” meaning “grill” in Spanish, and “adore,” reflecting the love and cherished memories associated with these gatherings.

Aside from a spacious indoor dining area, an airy al fresco section is also available outside that leads to its fully stocked bar – Bebeme – and a newly opened bakery. Original architectural elements have been preserved, blending seamlessly with contemporary design touches to create a warm and inviting ambiance.

At the helm of this captivating event was Beverage Director Ian Libang, a celebrated mixologist renowned for his international accolades. Libang’s vision transcends merely transforming Filipino ingredients into cocktails; he weaves local traditions and culture into each creation, offering a storytelling experience that immerses guests in Filipino heritage in a refined and sophisticated manner. “Our goal at Bizarre is to do something different,” Libang shared. “We incorporate our local traditions and culture into our cocktails, giving our guests a unique glimpse into Filipino life.”

Libang’s creations were complemented by the culinary genius of Mikel Zaguirre, Bizarre’s Founder and a chef of great repute. Together, they crafted a harmonious blend of cocktails and bar bites that delighted the palates of their guests. Zaguirre emphasized, “We prefer to use the term ‘Pinoy’ rather than just Filipino, as it encapsulates the heart and soul of our heritage. Our approach at Bizarre allows people to truly experience our Filipino-ness through our menu.”

The cocktail degustation, aptly named “The Roots,” was a five-course journey celebrating the timeless flavors of the Philippines, infused with contemporary twists. Guests were welcomed with “Quezo,” a delightful tapioca snack paired with kesong puti, setting the stage for an evening of culinary exploration.

The first course featured “Atchara,” a vibrant orange cocktail inspired by the popular Pinoy sour side dish, mellowed by Aperol spritz, spices, and ripe papaya, paired with “Inihaw,” a succulent trio of roasted kurobota pork, tenderloin, and chicken thigh.

Following this was “Sawsawan,” a cocktail spotlighting patis (fish sauce) and topped with calamansi sorbet. This sour-driven delight emerged as the crowd favorite, accompanied by “Kinilaw,” seasoned raw tanigue with leche de tigre and fried shallots.

The main course, “Binhi,” inspired by rice grains, featured a malt whiskey-driven cocktail garnished with chocolate bitters. It was paired with a creative twist on kare-kare, the “Kinunot” ox-tail pie with bagoong demi sauce, the evening’s most beloved pairing.

The dessert portion began with “Ni-yog,” a piña colada-esque cocktail featuring tequila, leche flan, and coconut, blended into tablea colada foam and torched for a delightful contrast. Paired with “Nilupak,” a cashew-coconut tart topped with pineapple and coconut cream, it was a delightful finale.

The degustation concluded with “Ampaw,” a celebratory toast inspired by the local deep-fried tutong (burnt rice) treat. This exquisite cocktail featured mesoyi and ampaw sorbet in milk-washed bourbon, providing a sophisticated end to an extraordinary evening.

Libang and Zaguirre’s dedication to showcasing Filipino culinary heritage has established Bizarre Bar as a premier destination for cocktail connoisseurs and gastronomes. Their unique approach has earned international acclaim, solidifying Bizarre Bar’s reputation as a must-visit venue in the heart of Makati, Poblacion. The Nagi Spirit: A Journey from Japan to the World

Ramen Nagi’s story is a testament to passion and innovation. It all began in 2006 when founder Satoshi Ikuta opened a tiny restaurant in Fukuoka, Japan. With limited space, customers were encouraged to share tables, creating a communal dining experience. Chef Ikuta prepared each bowl of ramen right in front of his diners, setting a new standard in the ramen world. His groundbreaking approach of serving a different type of ramen every day for 365 days quickly garnered a loyal following.

This small restaurant’s success soon spread by word of mouth, leading to long queues and a growing reputation as a top gourmet ramen destination. Chef Ikuta then took his passion overseas, opening his first international outlet in Hong Kong. Despite language barriers and cultural differences, his dedication to crafting personalized bowls of ramen won over the local clientele. The introduction of the omotenashi sheet, allowing customers to customize their ramen according to their preferred broth richness, noodle hardness, add-ons and more, was a hit. Today, Ramen Nagi has expanded to various countries, including the Philippines, bringing the same dedication to flavor and quality.

Its outlet in Greenhills Shopping Center brings its flavorful offerings to shoppers who want a comforting respite in between shopping bouts.

To fully appreciate Ramen Nagi’s offerings, there’s a recommended way to enjoy your bowl:

  1. Start with the Broth: Pick up your bowl and slurp the soup to savor the fragrant broth’s initial layer of taste. The act of slurping introduces air into the broth, enhancing the flavor.
  2. Enjoy the Noodles: Grab a few strands of noodles from the bottom of the bowl and slurp again. This time, enjoy the umami flavors from the pork and the subtle sweetness from the noodles.
  3. Add the Fire Sauce: Finally, mix in Ramen Nagi’s special fire sauce to let the flavors erupt, creating a complex and satisfying taste. This final step brings all the layers of flavor together.

Essential cyber hygiene tips to protect kids online

In today’s digital age, the internet has become an indispensable tool for our children, transforming how they conduct school research, communicate with teachers, stay connected with friends and family, and explore their interests. With the widespread use of smartphones, laptops, and other technologies, our younger generation enjoys seamless online connectivity, anytime and anywhere. While these advancements offer remarkable opportunities for learning and growth, they also expose our children to a myriad of cyber risks, including cyberbullying, phishing, identity theft, scams, and online predators.

A recent study by Surfshark in 2022 highlighted a concerning reality for parents in the Philippines: our country ranks second worldwide regarding children’s susceptibility and exposure to cyber threats, trailing only Thailand and ahead of Turkey. As the back-to-school season approaches, it’s more important than ever for parents to ensure their children are equipped with the knowledge and tools to navigate the internet safely.

Best Practices for Online Safety

Fortinet, a global leader in cybersecurity, shares vital tips to help parents teach their children about good cyber hygiene and staying safe online.

1. Access secure connections and links

One of the simplest yet most effective steps to safeguard your child’s online experience is to ensure they use secure connections. Teach them to look for https:// in the URL and a small lock symbol on the left side of the address bar before entering any personal information. These indicators signify that the connection is secure and that their data is safe from prying eyes.

Additionally, instill a habit of skepticism towards suspicious links and offers that seem too good to be true. Such links can harbor malware or lead to malicious websites designed to steal information. Encourage them to always read the fine print about privacy settings on websites or applications to understand how their data will be used.

2. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication

Passwords are the first line of defense against cyber threats. Teach your children to create strong, unique passwords for each of their online accounts. A good password is easy to remember but hard for others to guess. Avoid using easily identifiable information like birthdays or favorite sports teams. Instead, encourage the use of a combination of numbers, symbols, and both uppercase and lowercase letters.

To further protect their accounts, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to their phone, in addition to their password.

3. Keep devices and applications updated

Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software to gain access to personal data. Regularly updating devices and applications ensures that these vulnerabilities are patched and that the latest security features are in place. Make it a routine to check for updates and install them promptly.

4. Be cautious when sharing information online

It’s crucial to teach your children about the permanence of online content. Once something is posted, it can be difficult to completely remove it. Encourage them to think twice before sharing personal details, photos, or videos. Remind them that cybercriminals can use this information for malicious purposes, such as identity theft or scams.

Also, educate them about the dangers of interacting with strangers online. Cybercriminals can easily pose as friends or acquaintances to trick them into revealing sensitive information. Make sure they know to share any uncomfortable interactions with a trusted adult immediately.

Enhancing Cybersecurity Awareness

To help parents and children alike navigate the complex world of online safety, Fortinet offers a comprehensive training curriculum through the Fortinet Training Institute. The Network Security Expert (NSE) program includes free, self-paced courses designed to build cybersecurity awareness among students, parents, and educators. These courses, NSE 1 and NSE 2, provide valuable knowledge to help protect against evolving cyber threats.

Creating a Safe Digital Environment

By fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness and practicing good cyber hygiene, we can empower our children to safely and responsibly explore the digital world. As parents, it’s our responsibility to equip them with the tools and knowledge to protect themselves from cybercriminals. The internet offers incredible opportunities for learning and growth, but we must remain vigilant to ensure our children can navigate it safely.

Let’s make this back-to-school season not just about academic preparation, but also about preparing our children to face and overcome the cyber challenges that come with our increasingly connected world. By taking proactive steps and utilizing the resources available, we can create a safer online environment for the younger generation.

Stay informed, stay secure, and most importantly, stay connected with your kids as they embark on their digital journeys. Together, we can keep them safe from the hidden dangers of the internet.
