A flavorful family experience at Yabu House of Katsu, SM Megamall

Every Sunday is Family Day. Part of my family’s Sunday routine is to have lunch together after attending mass. We usually opt for either old favorites or new restaurants we want to try. For this instance, we opted for Yabu House of Katsu since we already know that we love the food there.

Yabu’s Unique Katsu Experience

Yabu House of Katsu stands out among other restaurants for several reasons, making it a unique and beloved destination for katsu enthusiasts. The first thing that struck us was their commitment to authenticity. Yabu prides itself on offering an authentic Japanese katsu experience. They adhere to traditional Japanese cooking techniques and use high-quality ingredients to ensure the utmost authenticity in their dishes. From the breading to the frying method, Yabu pays attention to every detail to create a truly authentic katsu. One ritual that we particularly enjoyed was preparing the katsu sauce by grinding the toasted sesame seeds in a textured bowl before pouring and mixing in the prepared katsu sauce.

Customization and variety are also key features of Yabu’s menu. They offer a wide range of katsu options to cater to various tastes. Whether you prefer pork, chicken, seafood, or even vegetarian katsu, Yabu has got you covered. This level of customization allows diners to enjoy their favorite type of katsu in their preferred style. The attention to detail is evident in the little extras they provide, such as unlimited servings of cabbage salad and various dipping sauces to complement the katsu. The miso soup is carefully crafted, and the rice is perfectly cooked, further enhancing the overall meal.

Delicious Katsu Selections at Yabu

We know that we couldn’t go wrong with the katsu sets, which consist of a special cut of katsu served with refillable soup, rice, cabbage, and fruit. I opted for the Rosu (Pork Loin) Set (P390/80g | P430/120g | P490/180g) since the fat trimming adds a lot of flavor to the meat.

My husband and daughter, both more fitness-conscious, opted for the Hire (Pork Tenderloin) Set (P415/80g | P450/120g), which has no fat.

My son, being a cheese-lover, went for the Menchi Katsu Set (P430) made with a mixture of minced beef and pork mixed together with Yabu’s special spices and stuffed with creamy cheese.

Of course, the kids insisted on an order of Mozzarella Katsu Sticks (P320), sticks of mozzarella coated in golden panko tossed with Yabu’s special furikake blend and served with spicy aioli dip.

Meanwhile, my husband wanted to munch on an order of Agedashi Tofu (P265), panko-crusted Japanese tofu topped with shredded bonito flakes and grated radish, and served on a bed of soy-dashi sauce, while waiting for our katsu sets.

The pricing of these items is just right for a weekend family meal. It feels like something special and tasty that we can look forward to without breaking the bank.

The ambiance at the SM Megamall branch of Yabu is inviting and comfortable, creating a pleasant dining experience for guests. The modern and stylish decor with sleek lines and contemporary furniture adds a touch of sophistication to the restaurant’s overall atmosphere. The staff at Yabu SM Megamall are very welcoming and attentive, and quite prompt when we needed rice and cabbage refills. From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were greeted with a warm welcome and provided with any assistance or guidance we needed throughout our dining experience.

The vibrant and energetic atmosphere of the SM Megamall branch adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the overall dining experience. The restaurant is often bustling with activity, creating a lively ambiance that makes it a great place for friends and families to gather and enjoy a meal together.

I can say that Yabu House of Katsu does deserve its position as one of the fam’s favorite restaurants

#TitaAdventures Unleashed: Fun things to do in Subic

Picture this: A gathering of fabulous Titas from all over the country, armed with their signature oversized totes and killer style, converging upon the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. It’s a celebration of a dear friend’s birthday, and the stage is set for a weekend of adventure, delectable feasts, and unforgettable memories.

Join me – your friendly Tita Jellybeans – as I recount my escapades outside of the City in this playful travelogue that showcases the most fun things to do in Subic for Titas like us!

Chapter 1: Destination Subic Bay Freeport Zone

Our Tita Adventure began with an invitation to the birthday bash of a close friend, Mama Rhods, who gathered forty of her beloved family, cherished friends, and fabulous co-workers, for an epic celebration.

This shindig took place in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone — home of fantastic beaches, stunning sunsets, foodie and shopping adventures — a perfect destination for Titas seeking thrilling experiences without compromising comfort and style.

Chapter 2: Go on a Food Trip

No Tita adventure is complete without indulging in mouthwatering delights.

Together with two of my fellow Titas, my first stop was MeatPlus Cafe, where we seize the opportunity to savor their irresistible Steak Treats for Two offer. Juicy US rib-eye end cut steaks paired with a medley of veggies, bottomless drinks, and unlimited rice refills—it’s a gastronomic feast that satisfies our discerning palates (and craving for steaks!), all for just Php1,700.

Chapter 3: Go on a Sunset Dinner Cruise

As the sun started its descent, we embarked on a sunset yacht cruise, courtesy of La Banca Travel & Tours. Aboard the vessel, we were treated to three hours of blissfully sailing through calm waters as we grooved and sang to lively party music. The golden sunset we were looking forward to may have been covered by an overcast sky, but the cooling breezes lifted our spirits and whet our appetites.

The dinner buffet tantalized our taste buds with street food skewers, mouthwatering pan-grilled steaks, succulent grilled fish and shrimp, and a delightful veggie salad. We definitely reveled in the experience, toasting to friendship and life’s sweet moments.

Chapter 4: Party All Night at the Beach

By the time the dinner cruise ended, the night iwas still young, and we were ready to unleash our inner party animals. Our next stop? Samba Blue Water Resort—a paradise where the waves meet our dance moves.

With overflowing drinks and a street food buffet spread out by the celebrant, we embraced the “pa-morning-an” spirit and danced the night away. A live singer, as well as gifted songstresses from our group, serenaded us, adding rhythm to our vibrant celebration. As you can see, these Titas know how to keep the party going!

(I don’t have a lot of pics for this party because, supposedly, what happens in Subic, stays in Subic! And I was too busy partying to take pictures, sorry!)

When I recovered from our pa-morning-an party, I was able to explore Samba Blue Water Resort the following morning before checking out. It is a family-friendly destination which offers affordable accommodations and fun beach activities such as island hopping tours and various water sports. Unfortunately, as I was only in Subic for the weekend, I will have to discover them on my next visit.

Chapter 5: Duty-Free Shopping Spree

No Tita adventure is complete without some retail therapy. The two Royal Duty Free outlets became our destination for duty-free shopping, where we got out our credit cards and eco bags and shopped for imported chocolates, delectable food items, and self-care products.

Our shopping bags overflowed with indulgence and a touch of luxury—perfect additions to our sophisticated Tita lifestyles. I was especially excited with my haul of four Tim Tam variants, seven Milka variants, two each of Betty Crocker Pound Cake Mix and Cream Cheese Frosting and a trio of Ox & Palm Corned Beef cans.

(Here’s a piece of trivia: Back in the day, these were referred to as “PX goods.” When the US military bases were still situated in Subic and Clark, stores that sell these products to US army personnel and their dependents were marked “PX,” short for “post exchange.” I bet you young’uns don’t hear that term much nowadays, do you?).

Tips for properly storing seasonal produce

Summer is an exciting time for fruit lovers in the Philippines. Many local fruits are in season between April and June, and it’s common to see large amounts of mangoes, melons, jackfruits, and Java plums in the market during this period. People who incorporate a lot of vegetables into their diet also have something to look forward to during this time. While it’s possible to grow vegetables year-round in a tropical country, summer is a particularly good time to harvest beans, corn, cucumbers, greens, peppers, and sweet potatoes, among others. Fresh produce like this makes for great snacks and salad components, especially if you’re trying to eat lighter and healthier this season.

To maximize your haul of fresh fruits and veggies, you need to consider how to best store them so that they’ll stay fresh for longer. Perhaps you recently opted to buy inverter refrigerator and you’re planning to put everything in there for the time being. That’s a good start, but you should also know that not every fruit and vegetable needs to be refrigerated.

Some Items Are Better Stored Outside the Fridge

There are some fruits and vegetables that fare better when left on the counter or stored in the pantry. Unfortunately, the only way to take note of which goes where is to keep a list and commit that list to memory. Among the vegetables that should be kept out of the fridge are tomatoes, garlic, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and ginger. When it comes to fruits, there are those that should be stored at room temperature until they’re fully ripe, after which they can be kept in the fridge. These include avocados, bananas, guavas, mangoes, melons, and papayas. Other fruits do equally well when left on the counter or stored inside the fridge. Take note that once a fruit has been opened or cut, it should be put in a container and stored in the refrigerator.

Not needing to refrigerate certain fruits and vegetables doesn’t mean that you can just leave them on the counter. Produce should be placed in a cool, dry, and dark place, as some have a tendency to sprout when exposed to sunlight.

On the other hand, there are fruits and vegetables that must be stored at low temperatures. Proper preparation is necessary to preserve their quality and extend their shelf life. Here are some of the essential tips you should know when storing summer produce in the fridge.

Refrain From Washing Them before Putting Them in the Fridge

It’s tempting to wash produce first so you can be sure it’s clean before storing it in the fridge. However, it’s best to refrain from doing so, as putting moist or wet items in the refrigerator can add to the internal humidity. The excess moisture, in turn, can negatively impact the freshness of produce and cause your fruits and veggies to rot earlier than they should.

Avoid Cutting Fruits and Veggies before Storing Them

Fruits and vegetables that are cut before storage are more likely to go bad faster compared to those that are stored intact. As much as possible, put these items whole in the refrigerator to preserve their freshness. Now, there are instances when you only need a portion of a fruit or veggie and have to store the remainder in the refrigerator. In this case, make sure to store these cut pieces in a covered container to keep them fresh for as long as possible.

Check If the Item Will Do Better on the Shelves or in the Crisper

The crisper is a drawer in your refrigerator that is specifically designed to keep produce fresh. It does this by fostering a greater level of humidity compared to the regular shelves in your fridge. Some crispers can even be manipulated to provide the precise level of humidity needed to keep fruits and veggies fresh for a longer time. As a rule of thumb, vegetables do better in the crisper than on the shelves of the ref. If an item is prone to wilting, it should go into the high-humidity crisper.

In the meantime, items that are prone to rot or overripening may be best kept on the fridge shelves or in a separate drawer. Fruits like bananas and apples can rot faster if stored in a high-humidity environment like the crisper drawer. Additionally, these items produce ethylene gas, which can affect the quality of your other fruits and vegetables. Storing them in a separate area ensures that the gas will not affect other produce.
