Kung hei fat choy, foodies!

This year, Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, falls on the first of February.

We can expect a lot of get-togethers, wishes for happiness and prosperity, and of course, lots and lots of food to celebrate the occasion.

Luckily, we’ve got quite a plethora of delicious dishes for us to enjoy with family and friends, whether at our favorite Asian restaurants or at home right here in the metro as we welcome Chinese New Year. Some of my favorites are:

Modern Shanghai’s Birthday Noodles

Noodles are generally eaten on someone’s birthday as a way wishing them long life, so how about enjoying as a way of wishing each other a Happy New Year? Modern Shanghai’s Birthday Noodles include chopped meat, hard-boiled quail eggs and veggies tossed together in a wok to make a flavorful noodle dish.

Hainanese Delights’ Hainanese Chicken Rice

The dish is traditionally prepared by poaching a whole chicken at sub-boiling temperatures, with some of the resulting stock combined with ginger, garlic and other aromatics used to cook the accompanying rice, producing a yellowish, flavorful and oily rice. It is usually served with three dipping sauces: a spicy red chili sauce, a dark soy sauce, and freshly ground ginger.

Chinese food feast delivery from Yang Chow

Did you know that Chinese food has three key flavors? These are sweet, sour, salty, bitter and spicy.

Yang Chow, Industria

The combination and degree of intensity of these flavors have brought forth one of the most varied of the world’s cuisines. As you hop from one region to the next, you will see variations in the dishes they produce: Sichuan, for example, is famous for its numbingly spicy food while Hong Kong leans towards the sweet-salty dynamic. It just goes to show that one of the world’s richest cultures can produce a very diverse culinary heritage.

Yang Chow, Industria

Those are some of the flavors that came into play when I decided to give the fam a break for our usual ulam fare and order in a Chinese feast from a nearby branch of Chinese restaurant chain Yang Chow.

Our delightful repast included:

Yang Chow Fried Rice (Php298 for large). Pre-cooked rice is stir-fried in a wok along with chopped char siu, scallions, veggies and scrambled egg. I wouldn’t dare order a Chinese meal without this staple. The kiddos would surely revolt!

Affordable Chinese feast at Kopi Tiam

This cozy resto in New Manila is actually known for offering affordable versions from the original North Park menu.

We recently welcomed my parents home with a sumptuous dinner in Kopi Tiam. The place is located along C. Benitez Street, past Camp Crame from EDSA. The part of Boni Serrano leading to this place was pretty dark and I had my doubts on whether we were in the right location. Fortunately, Hubby chanced upon the signage and we were soon assisted by a friendly security guard into our parking space.

The resto’s interiors were clean, well-lit and had a modern Asian feel.

To satisfy a hungry party of 9, our orders were:

  • 3 orders of large, fresh and nutty vegetable rolls or lumpiang sariwa (only Php93 per roll!)
  • 2 platters of Yang Chow Fried Rice because no Chinese food meal in my family is complete without it (Php188 per platter)
  • 2 plates of Lechon Macau, another family favorite (Php258 per plate)
  • Brocolli Garlic, just so we can say that we had another veggie dish (Php168)
  • Salt and Pepper Spareribs, always a safe bet (Php223)
  • Garlic and Beef Cubes (Php268)
  • Chami Noodles (Php288), and
  • Nestea Tower (Php250)

It was a comfy and tasty feast for the whole family; we were able to enjoy the relatively quiet ambiance and the service was fast and efficient.

Plus, given all our orders, total bill was at Php2,368!

I’m looking forward to dining here again and trying out the kopi beverages and desserts.

Kopi Tiam by North Park is located at Horseshoe Village, C. Benitez Street, New Manila, Quezon City. For reservations, call 02-7235674.

Chinese restos like Hap Chan are great for family dinners

I took my folks here for a nice family dinner. I always say that Chinese restos are great for family dinners because the viands are served family style which encourage sharing and bonding. We ordered our favorite Chinese food:- Hot and Sour Soup (my mom says it helps with her colds)

– Yang Chow Fried Rice (is a visit to a Chinese resto complete without ordering Yang Chow?)

 – Pork Ribs with Salt and Pepper (nicely seasoned)

 – Beef Steak Chinese Style (very tender with a sweet-savory flavor)

 – Pork Siomai

 – Birthday Noodles

The flavors meshed well together. As the servings were large, even when our original party of five grew to seven, we left the place with full bellies. The food were reasonably priced, too (I spent less than P2,000).

The place is clean with bright red and white decor but not at all off-putting. The servers were polite and accommodating.
