Cuisine that tastes like home at Tindeli by Chef Tatung

Nothing beats the warmth and comfort of home-cooked Filipino food. Whether it’s adobo, sinigang, or a plate of pancit, these dishes remind us of family gatherings, our lola’s kitchen, and the familiar flavors we grew up loving. At Tindeli, Chef Myke “Tatung” Sarthou has captured this feeling of home with his newest culinary venture—a Filipino-themed café and deli that combines the best of tradition with a modern touch.

Located in Gateway Mall’s Palenque food arena, Tindeli brings the essence of Filipino food to life in a setting that feels cozy and welcoming. Chef Tatung’s vision for Tindeli is simple: a place where Filipinos can come together to enjoy classic dishes, artisanal cured meats, and fresh-baked breads, all in one spot. It’s a café where the food tastes like home but with the quality and care of a chef’s touch.

A Culinary Dream 10 Years in the Making

Tindeli isn’t just another restaurant. It’s the result of a decade-long passion project that combines the Filipino tindahan (corner store) with an upscale deli experience. Chef Tatung, who is known for his expertise in Filipino cuisine, wanted to create a space where everyday comfort food could be celebrated and elevated.

The deli side of Tindeli offers a variety of Filipino-style cured meats, baked goods, and pasalubong treats. Whether you’re grabbing a bite to eat or taking home something special, Tindeli’s offerings are designed to remind you of the flavors of home.

Dining at Tindeli: A Feast of Familiar Flavors

After attending Chef Tatung’s birthday celebration at Quantum Skyview in Gateway Mall, my fellow foodies and I headed to Tindeli for dinner. The moment we stepped inside, we were welcomed by the warmth of the interiors—solihiya-patterned walls, the smell of freshly brewed coffee, and an ambiance that made us feel at home.

We were treated to a spread of dishes that highlighted the best of Tindeli’s menu:

Salted Egg Fries. A playful take on the popular salted egg flavor. The fries were crispy, with a generous coating of savory, salted egg powder that made them irresistible.

Chicken Macaroni Salad. This creamy side dish was a nostalgic reminder of Filipino celebrations, with tender chicken and macaroni mixed in a creamy dressing and topped with oodles of cheese.

Okoy. These crispy shrimp fritters were perfectly fried, delivering a satisfying crunch with each bite. A classic Filipino street food brought to the dining table.

Chop Suey. A colorful and hearty mix of vegetables and meat stir-fried in a savory sauce, it added a fresh and vibrant touch to our meal.

Dinuguan. A rich pork blood stew with tender meat, the dinuguan had a deep, hearty flavor that was both comforting and satisfying.

Kare Kare. This peanut-based oxtail stew was thick, creamy, and flavorful. Paired with bagoong (shrimp paste), it was a delicious reminder of home-cooked meals.

Our meal ended with an array of indulgent desserts that made for a sweet conclusion:

Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Strawberry Shortcake. Light, fluffy, and filled with sweet strawberries, this cake was a refreshing and fruity treat.
Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Mango Cake. Light and fluffy, with luscious mango and cream on top and in between layers, this cake celebrated the sweet tropical fruit that is a Filipino favorite.
Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Blueberry Cheesecake. Rich, creamy cheesecake with a tart blueberry topping, perfect for those who love a balance of sweetness and tanginess.
Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Peanut Butter Choco Cake. Decadent and indulgent, this cake combined the rich flavors of chocolate and peanut butter in every bite.

To complement the meal, we enjoyed a variety of refreshing drinks:

Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Pink Guava Iced Tea. A fruity, tangy beverage that was both sweet and refreshing.
Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Sago’t Gulaman: A Filipino classic made with tapioca pearls and caramel jelly, served in sweet syrup—a perfect drink to accompany the meal.
Tindeli by Chef Tatung
Kape Americano: Made from beans sourced from Mt. Apo and Sultan Kudarat, this coffee was bold, flavorful, and a testament to the quality of Filipino-grown beans.
Tindeli by Chef Tatung
A Pasalubong Haven

Tindeli isn’t just about dining in. It’s also a haven for pasalubong—those take-home goodies that Filipinos love to share with family and friends. From giant ensaymadas to homemade galantina, there’s no shortage of options for anyone looking to bring a piece of Tindeli home.

One of Tindeli’s signature items is the Tindesal—an oversized, open-faced pandesal topped with generous fillings like chicken salad and longganisa spread. It’s a playful take on the classic Filipino bread roll, made even more indulgent.

Tindeli by Chef Tatung

Chef Tatung also offers his range of house-made cured meats and baked breads, including his classic sourdough and ube pandesal. These items are made in-house with the highest quality ingredients, offering a taste of home that’s perfect for gifting or enjoying at home.

The Future of Tindeli

Tindeli’s first branch in Gateway Mall is just the beginning. Chef Tatung has big plans for the future, aiming to open more branches in key cities across Metro Manila and beyond. Over the next few years, he plans to bring Tindeli to more locations, sharing his love for Filipino cuisine with even more people.

Chef Tatung has expressed plans to target opening ten new branches next year alone, expanding the Tindeli experience while staying true to the quality and authenticity that defines it.

A MAS PINASARAP anniversary foodie adventure at Seven Corners, Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria

A (not so) few years ago, my Significant Other and I decided to make it official and go through the adventure of married life together. The past several years had its ups and downs but they are always marked with significant milestones and great memories.

Well, these deserve to be celebrated in grand style, don’t they? So on our special day, Dear Hubby and I decided to go on a food adventure at Seven Corners, Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria’s renowned all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant.

A Warm Welcome and Stylish Ambiance

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the restaurant’s chic and contemporary interiors, a result of its recent renovation. The stylish lighting, sleek furniture, stunning view of the Ortigas business district from our window seat as well as the thoughtfully placed accent pieces all created an airy, refreshing vibe that set the tone for our evening.

We arrived a bit early so we were able to witness the frenetic energy of the chefs and servers meticulously plating and staging the stations and dining areas, ensuring that the whole experience is not just a feast for the tastebuds, but for other senses as well.

Exploring the Seven Corners

Seven Corners got its name from its diverse culinary offerings from around the world, spread across seven unique stations. Each station beckoned with a promise of a gastronomic adventure, and we eagerly embarked on our culinary journey.

Salad Station. Fresh greens, sliced vegetables, and an assortment of dressings, nuts and cold cuts awaited.

Filipino Station. In celebration of Philippine Independence Day, the restaurant has a dedicated Filipino station – MAS PINASARAP – that paid delightful homage to our heritage, and brought back fond memories of family gatherings, thanks to viands loved by Filpino historical luminaries such as Tinola, Pork Binagoongan, Bistek, Fish Escabeche, Pinakbet and Sisig Rice. Of course, the star of the show is the Lechon de Cebu, herb marinated suckling pig with crispy skin that gives way to tender and flavorful meat.

Rediscovering Filipino Cuisine at Kingsford Cafe’s Filipino Food Festival

Over the past few years, Filipino food has been slowly but surely getting the recognition it deserves as a truly world-class cuisine. Characterized by Spanish, Chinese and Indian influences as well as regional cultures, Filipino cuisine has been noted to offer rich diversity and bold flavors.

However, most Pinoys tend to take their homegrown dishes for granted. That doesn’t apply to Kingsford Hotel’s Executive Chef Angelo Chubby Timban. A seasoned chef with accolades in international cooking competitions, Chef Chubby is known for his creativity and passion for the craft. His culinary philosophy is deeply rooted in his Filipino upbringing, yet redefined through modern European techniques and contemporary Asian executions.

A homey yet elegant setting for Filipino culinary explorations

Located at the ground floor of Kingsford Hotel Manila, the Kingsford Cafe is fusion of modern elegance and cultural homage. Since its opening in late 2021, the hotel’s cafe has become a favored destination for both travelers and locals seeking a unique culinary experience. The cafe’s contemporary design and cozy interiors, complemented by beautiful wall art, create an inviting ambiance perfect for enjoying a meal that celebrates Filipino heritage.

With a seating capacity of up to 128 guests, Kingsford Cafe is well-equipped to host the bustling crowds that the festival attracts. Its sectioned dining areas offer an intimate setting for private gatherings, making it an ideal spot for family celebrations or intimate get-togethers.

A journey through flavors of the Philippines

The festival is more than just a buffet; it’s a comprehensive tour of the Philippines through its diverse regional cuisines. Guests are invited to explore dishes from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, each offering a unique taste of the country’s culinary landscape.

Toasting to Freedom and Flavor with Liberator Lager at Cafe Romulo

In the annals of Philippine history, the name Carlos P. Romulo is etched in golden letters. This journalist, diplomat, and the first Asian to serve as president of the UN General Assembly left an indelible mark on our nation. His legacy endures through the prestigious restaurant chain operated by his descendants, Romulo Café. But this isn’t your ordinary dining experience; it’s a culinary journey through history and heritage.

At Romulo Café, every dish tells a story. Their recipes pay tribute to Virginia Llamas Romulo, the grandmother behind Romulo Café’s culinary treasures. Known for her exotic table settings and delectable food when hosting embassy dinners where her husband marshalled for full Philippine independence, Lola Virginia was a paragon of hospitality. Her legacy is carried forward in Romulo Café’s commitment to Filipino cuisine.

Cafe Romulo’s Makati Branch

As Romulo Café expands its footprint, it’s hard to miss the swanky Makati branch on Jupiter Street. This branch is the sophisticated sibling of the first outpost in Quezon City. Ivy and Cecile Almario, the acclaimed designers, have lent their artistic touch to create an ambiance that’s both classy and relaxed.

With walls adorned with framed black-and-white photos of Romulo, both with his family and alongside other political and historical luminaries, the restaurant provides immersive journey through Philippine history.

Liberator Lager: Fulfill Your Promise

And in this location, on the anniversary of a very important date in Philippine history, another historic first is introduced: Liberator Lager. This refreshing beer, available exclusively at Romulo Café branches, is the result of a collaboration with Engkanto Brewery. It’s not just any beer; it’s a promise fulfilled, a homage to the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people.

Brewed using the finest Pilsner malt and American hops, Liberator Lager is a masterpiece that embodies the flavors of freedom. It has just the right balance of malt sweetness and a subtle tropical profile with hints of citrus, passionfruit, and melon. With every sip, you’re tasting history and honor.

The launch of Liberator Lager holds a special place in the hearts of the Romulo family. It coincided with the anniversary of the Leyte Landing, a momentous event in Philippine history. General Douglas MacArthur’s promise of “I shall return” was fulfilled on this day. Carlos P. Romulo played a pivotal role in ensuring the freedom of the Philippines, delivering speeches in America during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in 1944 to keep the U.S. focus on the Pacific. It’s a part of history that deserves to be celebrated.

Pinoy-Style Barbecue at Lola Ote Restaurant

When it comes to finding a place that offers mouthwatering Pinoy-style barbecue that’s both delicious and affordable, Lola Ote Grill and Restaurant in Quezon City is a name that should be on your list. Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at Lola Ote with my officemates, taking a much-deserved break from our daily grind.

The Destination for Down-Home Pinoy-Style Barbecue

Tucked away along 26 Sgt. Esguerra Street, Diliman, Lola Ote Grill and Restaurant is a charming eatery that’s well-known for its iconic 18-inch pork barbecues. The restaurant’s cozy and inviting ambiance provides the perfect setting for a relaxed and “come-as-you-are” dining experience. Lola Ote occupies a former ancestral house, built in the 1960s, which has been thoughtfully transformed into a restaurant. The restaurant recently underwent quite a renovation, improving the establishment’s overall ambiance with more spacious seating areas and lots of natural light.

One of the things that set Lola Ote apart is its rich culinary heritage. Many of the recipes served here have been handed down from the proprietor’s grandmother. This deep-rooted connection to traditional Filipino flavors adds an authentic touch to every dish. It’s a testament to the care and love that goes into preparing each meal.

The real star of the show at Lola Ote is its iconic 18-inch pork barbecues, served on metal skewers. This unique grilling technique ensures that the meat is cooked to perfection from the inside out. The steel skewers themselves have undergone several changes before achieving the current style, resulting in tender, juicy, and flavorful barbecue that you won’t soon forget.

Lunching on a Feast of Pinoy Flavors

Lola Ote caters to different preferences with its diverse menu. In addition to the famous barbecues, we found a range of dishes, each with its unique appeal.

The Lola Ote BBQ (XL) (Php140/stick) is the restaurant’s pièce de résistance. These 18-inch skewers are not only a visual delight but also a true flavor bomb. The metal skewers’ grilling technique ensures that the meat remains juicy and tender while offering that perfect smoky char.

The nostalgic flavors of Isaw Baboy (barbecued pork intestines) (Php40/stick) and Isaw Manok (barbecued chicken intestines) (Php35/stick) take you back to the bustling streets of the Philippines. Served in a cozy setting, these street food favorites offer a trip down memory lane.

Lola Ote also serves up heartiness with classic Lechon Kawali (Pnp480), tender boneless pork belly with crispy skin.
