After all, this gastronomic destination is on a worthy mission: to preserve the restaurant’s cherished signature flavors while introducing a tantalizing array of new dishes, an endeavor that foodie who’s always on the lookout for delicious adventures fully supports.
Old-World Beijing Charm
The Manila Standard aptly described Dragon Court as emanating “old Beijing feels,” a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with. Stepping into this restaurant transported me to a realm that seamlessly blended old-world Beijing charm with the excitement of contemporary Chinese cuisine.
Immersed in hues of red and gold, Dragon Court exudes an unmistakable aura of traditional grandeur. Dragon motifs, lanterns, and traditional arches gracefully adorn the restaurant, creating an ambiance that’s both regal and inviting. High-backed chairs encircle round tables equipped with iconic lazy Susans, ensuring an enjoyable, communal dining experience.

The heart of Dragon Court lies in its culinary offerings, a diverse menu curated by Chef EJ Yap and her team. This tasty collection takes diners on a journey through classic and innovative Chinese delights, some of which I was able to enjoy during a recent visit with a friend.
Dimsum Delights
The dimsum offerings are a testament to the craftsmanship in Dragon Court’s kitchen. From the delicate folds of Xiao Long Bao (Php300/3pcs) to the burst of flavors in the Shrimp and Pork Siu Mai with Crab Roe (Php280/3pcs), each bite is a symphony of taste. The Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (Php240/3pcs), more commonly known as Hakaw, with its generous and succulent filling, further elevated our dimsum experience.
Savoring Soups
I can say that Dragon Court’s soul-warming soup selections certainly started our meal right. The Eight Treasure Wintermelon Soup (Php390), a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, and the Braised Assorted Seafood and Fish Maw Soup (Php320), a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients, showcase the culinary prowess behind each creation.
Satisfying Mains
The main courses at Dragon Court are a celebration of the diverse possibilities inherent in Chinese cuisine. I can’t imagine a Chinese meal without Yang Chow Fried Rice (Php280), and this was no exception, as it pairs well with other delicious dishes such as another classic like the Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple (Php380).
The Vegetarian Stewed Eggplant in Clay Pot (Php320) offered a hearty and flavorful option, while the Braised Grouper Fillet and Vermicelli in Hotpot (Php420) was quite a sensory delight. On the other hand, the Fried Shrimp Ball with Mozzarella Cheese (Php680) presented a delectable surprise.
Sweet Endings
No culinary journey is complete without a sweet denouement, and Dragon Court delivered it in style with its Hot Almond Cream with Glutinous Rice Ball (Php120), a warm milky embrace for the taste buds, and the Mango Tapioca Pudding (Php220), which provided a refreshing and delightful conclusion to the feast.

Discovering Nagoya’s Rich History and Modern Wonders
Nagoya’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Ravaged by heavy bombing during World War II, the city emerged from the ashes as a modern metropolis. Today, Nagoya is a testament to the juxtaposition of rich history and futuristic architecture. History enthusiasts and modern architecture admirers will both find their niche here.

Nagoya Castle
Nagoya Castle stands as a symbol of Nagoya’s history and recovery. Destroyed in a 1945 bombing raid, the castle was meticulously reconstructed in 1959, preserving its original look with a modern interior. Here, you’ll encounter vintage exhibits from the Edo Period, including sliding doors, beautifully painted screens, swords, and helmets. A ride on the elevator to the 5th floor affords visitors with for breathtaking views of Nagoya City. The iconic golden tiger-headed dolphins on the roof add a touch of regal elegance. Surrounding the castle, cherry blossoms bloom in late March and early April, or in our case, the trees change into their autumn foliage, creating a mesmerizing scene.

Atsuta Shrine
Atsuta Jingu, one of Japan’s most important shrines, boasts a history that dates back over 1,900 years. It is renowned as the guardian of the legendary Kusanagi-no-tsurugi sword, one of the three sacred treasures of the Imperial House. While the sword remains hidden from the public eye, the shrine houses thousands of traditional and culturally significant artifacts, including sacred garments, furniture, mirrors, ancient masks, and documents. The sprawling shrine complex also features buildings for weddings and tea ceremonies.
Osu Kannon Temple offers a unique blend of spirituality and shopping. Founded in 1612 and relocated in the 17th century, the temple stands as a serene oasis with a Japanese pagoda, Buddha statues, and a massive red paper lantern. Stroll through the bustling Osu outdoor shopping mall, filled with souvenirs, household items, traditional crafts, food, and antiques. You may also chance upon the Fuji Sengen Shrine which features statues of kitsune (Japanese for fox) guarding the entrance.
Tokugawaen, a Japanese garden, is a visual masterpiece with a central pond and stunning natural beauty. The design, which includes a clear stream flowing from a waterfall through a ravine to the pond, symbolizes the essence of Japanese nature. The garden’s unique landforms, untouched woods, and the magnificent stereoscopic rock garden make it a true daimyo garden. Visit at any season to witness the changing colors and the blossoms of peonies and irises.

Nabana No Sato, located in Kuwana City, is a family-oriented theme park filled with beauty and attractions. While entry may seem a bit expensive at times, the cost includes vouchers worth 1,000 yen, which can be used at restaurants and facilities, effectively reducing your admission fee.

Takayama’s old town is a well-preserved relic from the feudal ages when the city thrived as a wealthy merchant town. Stroll through the southern half of the old town, especially Sannomachi Street, where old homes, shops, cafes, and sake breweries await. Some have been in business for centuries. Visit the Fujii Art Gallery, also known as Fujii Folk Craft Museum, located in a charming old building, and explore the various household items and art objects on display.

Shirakawa-go Village
Hidden in the mountains and forests of neighboring Gifu and Toyama prefectures, the Historical Village of Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its unique Gassho-zukuri architecture, characterized by thatched roofs shaped like praying hands, is extremely rare in Japan. These houses were constructed without nails or metal materials, using only natural resources like wood and straw. The village, isolated for a long time due to its location, retains dozens of historical houses and a glimpse into a bygone era.

The 28-square-meter room was spacious and thoughtfully designed, housing two spacious and comfy double beds, a mini-fridge (to hold our munchables for our late-night cravings), a living/sitting area with a view of the Hori River, and equipped high-speed wireless internet to keep us connected. As we relaxed in the room, we entertained ourselves and sought inspiration from Nagoya travel blogs on Youtube with the 55-inch LCD TV.
The Deluxe Room Twin is perfect for up to two guests, and the featherbed and duvet on the double beds ensured a cozy night’s sleep. The room featured air conditioning to keep us comfortable and USB outlets for all our charging needs. The bathroom was no less impressive, with a shower/tub combination, a lighted makeup mirror, a hairdryer, and plush slippers to pamper us. For those who need to catch up on work, the room comes with a desk and writing/work area with electrical outlets.
Nearby Dining Delights
When it comes to dining, the Courtyard Nagoya offers an array of options to satisfy your taste buds. But if you’re itching to explore the neighborhood, there are plenty of culinary gems to discover. Here are some of the establishments we tried out during our stay:
Hakoya Sakae Fushimi is known for its fresh seafood and classic Japanese dishes like karaage (fried chicken) and juicy pork katsu.
Royal International, a shabu-shabu restaurant situated above a jewelry store. The flavorful combination of curry topped rice and hearty shabu-shabu is a sure winner!
Sekai no Yamachan is acclaimed for the Maboroshino Tebasaki, which are peppery fried chicken wings. A local favorite, this dish is a must-try.
Ichiran is a renowned ramen bar known for its Classic Tonkotsu Ramen. A steaming bowl of ramen is a must on any trip to Japan, and Ichiran does it exceptionally well.
Terrasse Nayabashi Food Court. Fast and affordable eats such as noodles and karaage are easily available at this food court.
Hori River. An artificial river dating back 400 years, created alongside the construction of Nagoya Castle. Courtyard by Marriott takes most of its earthy interior design inspiration from the Hori River.
Nagoya Castle. Completed in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Some parts of the castle, including the Corner Towers, gates, and screen paintings of the Hommaru Palace, have survived the ravages of time and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Tokugawaen Park. A Japanese garden featuring a central pond and stunning natural beauty. Its design, with a clear stream flowing from a waterfall through the ravine to the pond, symbolizes the essence of Japanese nature.
Osu Kannon Temple. Osu Kannon is a popular Buddhist temple with a rich history, which houses a wooden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, carved by Kobo Daishi. Beside the temple is the Osu Shopping District which houses over 1,200 establishments.
Atsuta Shrine. One of Shinto’s most important shrines, enshrining the Sun Goddess Amaterasu and the sacred sword Kusanagi. The shrine stands in a pleasant, wooded park in southern Nagoya and is a place of worship for millions of visitors each year.
Shirakawa Park. A serene green space in the heart of Nagoya, offering beautiful fountains, bridges, and artwork, it is home to the Nagoya City Science Museum and the Nagoya City Art Museum.
Sakae. This bustling district offers fantastic shopping opportunities. Explore Melsa Sakae Honten for trendy clothing and fashion finds from brands such as Uniqlo and GU. For souvenirs and “pasalubong,” venture across the street to the 24-hour Don Quijote outlet.

Nabana No Sato. A family-oriented theme park located in Kuwana City, next to Nagoya. It is famous for its illuminated attractions, including the romantic Tunnel of Light and the Cloud of Lights.
Takayama Old Town. A beautifully preserved old town with buildings dating back to the feudal ages.Here, tourists can stroll through streets with centuries-old shops, cafes, sake breweries, and even an art gallery.
Shirakawago Village. A UNESCO World Heritage Site with unique Gassho-zukuri architecture, wherein no nails or any other metal materials were used during the construction of the historic houses.

These schools often have makeshift furnishings, very few textbooks, intermittent electricity, multi-grade classes, and cater to less than 100 learners, mostly from indigenous communities. Teachers must travel for hours on challenging terrain, and the schools lack electricity, making mentoring and monitoring difficult. The Club’s project will introduce solar-powered printing and lighting systems to help these schools cope with the demands of full face-to-face classes post-COVID, benefiting indigenous children and youth in disadvantaged communities, while improving the safety, efficiency and productivity of teachers serving the communities.
