As a food blogger, I always welcome extraordinary gastronomic experiences. There’s little wonder then, that when I received an invitation to an exclusive preview of the Kurobuta Showcase at Cafe Ilang-Ilang in The Manila Hotel, I knew I couldn’t possibly miss it.

An Enchanting Dining Atmosphere

As the epicenter of Manila’s power dining, Cafe Ilang-Ilang has been a beloved spot for generations. The newly reimagined cafe seamlessly blends casual chic dining with an extensive selection of buffet delights.

The stunning open Pan-Asian kitchen, Churrasco station, decadent dessert station, and Italian kitchen contribute to a truly unique gastronomic adventure.

Alongside fellow bloggers and esteemed media representatives, I stepped into the elegantly-appointed Atrium, the largest function room of Cafe Ilang-Ilang, styled by the hotel’s creative consultant Rachy Cuna to experience its Kurobuta Showcase.

Unveiling the wonders of Kurobuta Pork

Kurobuta pork, also known as Berkshire pork, is a culinary gem known for its exceptional qualities. It has earned its distinction as the “Wagyu of Pork” thanks to its exceptional marbling, the abundant intramuscular fat which creates a tender, juicy texture that melts in your mouth. Each bite of Kurobuta pork reveals a rich, a distinctive yet naturally sweet and nutty taste, accentuated by the high fat content, which added depth and complexity to the dishes crafted by Cafe Ilang-Ilang’s culinary team helmed by the hotel’s executive chef Chef Konrad Walter using this premium pork.

Kurobuta Pork Skin Chicharones. Crispy and golden-brown pork skin that crackles with each bite. Made with deep-fried Kurobuta pork rinds, these chicharones offer a mouthwatering combination of rich flavors and irresistible crunch.

A flavorful family experience at Yabu House of Katsu, SM Megamall

Every Sunday is Family Day. Part of my family’s Sunday routine is to have lunch together after attending mass. We usually opt for either old favorites or new restaurants we want to try. For this instance, we opted for Yabu House of Katsu since we already know that we love the food there.

Yabu’s Unique Katsu Experience

Yabu House of Katsu stands out among other restaurants for several reasons, making it a unique and beloved destination for katsu enthusiasts. The first thing that struck us was their commitment to authenticity. Yabu prides itself on offering an authentic Japanese katsu experience. They adhere to traditional Japanese cooking techniques and use high-quality ingredients to ensure the utmost authenticity in their dishes. From the breading to the frying method, Yabu pays attention to every detail to create a truly authentic katsu. One ritual that we particularly enjoyed was preparing the katsu sauce by grinding the toasted sesame seeds in a textured bowl before pouring and mixing in the prepared katsu sauce.

Yabu Family Sunday Lunch
Yabu Family Sunday Lunch

Customization and variety are also key features of Yabu’s menu. They offer a wide range of katsu options to cater to various tastes. Whether you prefer pork, chicken, seafood, or even vegetarian katsu, Yabu has got you covered. This level of customization allows diners to enjoy their favorite type of katsu in their preferred style. The attention to detail is evident in the little extras they provide, such as unlimited servings of cabbage salad and various dipping sauces to complement the katsu. The miso soup is carefully crafted, and the rice is perfectly cooked, further enhancing the overall meal.

Delicious Katsu Selections at Yabu

We know that we couldn’t go wrong with the katsu sets, which consist of a special cut of katsu served with refillable soup, rice, cabbage, and fruit. I opted for the Rosu (Pork Loin) Set (P390/80g | P430/120g | P490/180g) since the fat trimming adds a lot of flavor to the meat.

Yabu Family Sunday Lunch

My husband and daughter, both more fitness-conscious, opted for the Hire (Pork Tenderloin) Set (P415/80g | P450/120g), which has no fat.

Yabu Family Sunday Lunch

My son, being a cheese-lover, went for the Menchi Katsu Set (P430) made with a mixture of minced beef and pork mixed together with Yabu’s special spices and stuffed with creamy cheese.

Yabu Family Sunday Lunch

Of course, the kids insisted on an order of Mozzarella Katsu Sticks (P320), sticks of mozzarella coated in golden panko tossed with Yabu’s special furikake blend and served with spicy aioli dip.

Yabu Family Sunday Lunch

Meanwhile, my husband wanted to munch on an order of Agedashi Tofu (P265), panko-crusted Japanese tofu topped with shredded bonito flakes and grated radish, and served on a bed of soy-dashi sauce, while waiting for our katsu sets.

Yabu Family Sunday Lunch

The pricing of these items is just right for a weekend family meal. It feels like something special and tasty that we can look forward to without breaking the bank.

Inviting Ambiance at Yabu SM Megamall

The ambiance at the SM Megamall branch of Yabu is inviting and comfortable, creating a pleasant dining experience for guests. The modern and stylish decor with sleek lines and contemporary furniture adds a touch of sophistication to the restaurant’s overall atmosphere. The warm lighting, with its soft and warm-toned lights, sets a relaxed and intimate mood, making it a perfect place to enjoy a meal with family and loved ones.

The seating arrangements at Yabu SM Megamall are thoughtfully designed to accommodate both small and large groups comfortably. Whether you’re dining as a couple or with a larger party, you’ll find seating arrangements that cater to your needs. The staff at Yabu SM Megamall are very welcoming and attentive, and quite prompt when we needed rice and cabbage refills. From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were greeted with a warm welcome and provided with any assistance or guidance we needed throughout our dining experience.

The vibrant and energetic atmosphere of the SM Megamall branch adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the overall dining experience. The restaurant is often bustling with activity, creating a lively ambiance that makes it a great place for friends and families to gather and enjoy a meal together.

Indulge in delicious comfort food at Borro Manila

During the pre-pandemic era, the Tomas Morato and Scout areas in Quezon City have the distinction of being local foodie havens.

In these relatively quiet and mostly residential areas have popped up a diverse collection of dining choices offering a wide array of cuisines.

While the pandemic and its resulting lockdowns have slowed down this once vibrant food scene, it has slowly but surely shown signs of recovery.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

This is evidenced by the opening of a new and exciting dining destination in the area last December: Borro Manila.

A new trendy spot for foodies

Taking its name from the street where it is located, Borro certainly seems all set to be a popular establishment among the metro’s food fans.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

Upon arriving here with my officemates for one of our much-anticipated happy lunches, I was at first daunted by the seeming lack of parking space in front of the building. I was happy to discover that the restaurant offers free valet service so parking turned out not to be a problem.

It boasts of a welcoming facade, where stairs led up to the first floor al fresco and indoor dining areas. Another set of stairs to the side led up to similar areas on the second floor.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

These expansive and airy spaces are marked by well-appointed furnishings and chic yet homey decor, made all the more welcoming by an abundance of natural light streaming from floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

All of these add up to making Borro a very Instagrammable spot for foodies to capture moments and memories with their favorite comfort food.

International and Filipino comfort food

At Borro Manila, my officemates and I were happy to discover a diverse menu featuring both international and Filipino comfort food favorites.

Borro’s complimentary freshly baked bread and butter started our meal off right while its Watermelon Shake (₱140) was a refreshing treat.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

Then, we warmed our tummies with a deliciously hearty helping of Polonchay Soup (₱480) made with spinach, shrimp and eggs.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

We also dove into the Super Nachos (₱390), a heaping pile of crispy tortilla chips topped in meat, bell peppers, jalapenos, onion, olives and marinara sauce, then smothered in torched cheese.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

The Creamy Truffle Pasta (₱580), a rich and decadent dish made with cream, white wine, garlic and truffle oil did fit the bill for something more indulgent.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

The Boneless Fried Chicken (₱540), on the other hand, which was served with homemade gravy, came in servings large enough for the whole group to share.

Borro Manila
Borro Manila

The Lechon Kawali (₱530) consisted of deep-fried pork belly and crispy chicharon and a serving of rice.

Borro Manila

Lastly, Borro’s Bagnet Kare-Kare (₱550) brings a taste of Ilocos with deep-fried bagnet on a bed of peanut sauce and veggies with bagoong on the side.

Reviving Tomas Morato’s Food Scene

Borro Manila proved to be a welcome addition to the Tomas Morato area, which has long been a hub for foodies in Quezon City. With its stylish yet welcoming decor, diverse menu, and prime location, the restaurant is a perfect venue for family and friends to come together over good food.

Borro Manila

It’s surely doing its bit inhelping to revitalize the neighborhood’s food scene and attract a new generation of diners.

Celebrating in style at Guevarra’s by Chef Laudico

As a true-blue foodie, celebrating my natal day somewhere with good food and good vibes is a must.

So to commemorate my 46th trip around the sun, I took the fam to dinner at one of the metro’s most celebrated buffet restaurants: Guevarra’s by Chef Laudico.

It’s not actually my family’s first time at this establishment. Over the years, together with our extended family, we have celebrated several special occasions at Guevarra’s, from birthdays to graduations and balikbayan visits.

My 37th birthday
Vintage ambiance with an old-world charm

The place itself would strongly appeal to aesthetes, given its quaint vintage-inspired architecture and decor. Situated in a house built in the 1920s, the restaurant still retains much of the place’s old-world charm from its sprawling courtyard, imposing stairway and the intricate woodwork and chandeliers in the main dining hall.

Decorating the walls are pictures commemorating the restaurant’s namesake: Pedro Guevarra, a Filipino soldier, lawyer and legislator who became Resident Commissioner of the Philippines during the American Occupation. During his term as resident commissioner, he worked tirelessly for the approval of the Tydings-McDuffie Act which paved the way for the establishment of the Philippine Commonwealth and its eventual independence from the US.

Also adorning the walls are plates signed by local celebrities which serve as their testimonials to their superb dining experiences at Guevarra’s.

#YouButterBelieveIt: Butter Grill’s Cheese Rolls are your new favorite treat!

If you’re a fan of Pinoy-style pastries, you’ve probably heard of Cheese Rolls. These soft and fluffy bread rolls stuffed with cheese have been a favorite among Filipinos for years.

These yummy pastries are made using basically the same dough as another Filipino bakery classic: the ensaymada. The dough is soft, fluffy, and buttery, providing the perfect canvas for the sweet and salty combination of flavors that Cheese Rolls are known for. The cheese filling brings a pop of richness and saltiness in the middle of the sweet and pillowy bread.

Discover new delicious Indonesian street food possibilities at Bhoy Martabak, Cainta

Did you know that martabak is a much-beloved Indonesian street food? It is a kind of stuffed pancake that can be sweet or savory, sold by street vendors and food stalls in cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. It is also commonly found in night markets and food courts, as well in some bakeries and coffee shops.

Types of Martabak

There are two main types of martabak: the sweet variant (martabak manis) and the savory one (martabak telur).

Martabak Manis is usually served as a sweet snack or a dessert. It consists of a thick pancake made with condensed milk, crushed peanuts and sesame seeds.

I had my first taste (and several since then!) of this sweet delicacy, thanks to Sammy’s Restaurant where I developed a strong liking for the Choco-Cheese Martabak Manis variant, so much so that during the quarantine lockdowns, I ordered some for my kiddos and gave one to my officemate for her birthday. It is usually presented divided in two with the halves on top of each other, making a sort of sandwich which is then cut into serving pieces. It can also be served open-faced to showcase the sweet fillings. It’s quite an unusual yet so tasty dessert that will make for a pleasant surprise for anyone receiving it.

The Cheese-Corn Martabak Manis, on the other hand, is not as sweet as the chocolate variant, so it’s perfect for those who are not so much into sweets.

The savory type, on the other hand – Martabak Telur – consist of spiced minced meat and egg filling which is cooked in the griddle along with a thin dough which is fried to crispiness. When paired with rice, it’s great as a light meal while on its own, it is tasty snack to tide you over until lunch or dinner time.

Martabak Origins

Martabak is believed to have originated in the Middle East, specifically in Yemen or Saudi Arabia, and was introduced to Indonesia by Arab traders. The name “martabak” is thought to come from the Arabic word “mutabbaq,” which means “folded.”

Over time, the dish has evolved to incorporate local ingredients and flavors, resulting in the many variations of martabak that are popular in Indonesia today. Martabak has become a beloved street food in Indonesia, and it is often associated with late-night snacking or as a breakfast food. It is also enjoyed in other parts of Southeast Asia and has gained popularity in other countries as well.

And now, thanks to Bhoy Martabak, the delicious possibilities that this delicacy offers is now more immediately accessible to foodies east of Manila.
