4 reasons to enjoy a Japanese feast at Uma Uma, S Maison

Ah, Metro Manila in the summer!

With the rising temperatures and the ever-present traffic jams, what could possibly make this homebody venture out to Pasay City?

A delicious foodie adventure, of course!

The hassles of travel and traffic jams are worth it when gastronomic delights await you at your destination.

Such was my experience when Hubby and I braved the city’s streets – our first outing sans the little ones – to sample the delights of Uma Uma.

Formerly known as Wu Maru, this Japanese restaurant originated from Fukuoka as a ramen joint-izikaya back in 1953. In 1994, its owner changed its name to Uma Uma and brought its delicious offerings to Singapore, Bangkok and more, recently, the Philippines, being among the first establishments to open at the S Maison in Pasay.

If you’ve never heard of Uma Uma before, let me give you four reasons why you should get more acquainted with it.

1. Ramen eatery leads to a cocktail bar

Don’t be fooled by the fuss-free, open kitchen with a ramen bar and simple seating near the store’s opening; we just took a few more steps to the back and entered a luxurious yet cozy cocktail bar. Here. we ordered some drinks to relax and unwind with as we enjoyed the view of Manila Bay from its floor-to-ceiling windows.

It’s like being in two places at once: stay out front for quick eats or head on to the back for a more leisurely meal.

2.You can take comfort in hot umami-rich ramen

Sure, summer’s bringing in the heat but we definitely won’t say no to Uma Uma’s much lauded Hakata-style MSG-free ramen. Each bowl of goodness is assembled upon order using fresh ingredients, deliciously chewy noodles based on a family recipe and a flavorful pork bone broth that’s been boiled for at least ten hours.

Uma Uma Ramen (Php390). I opted for the classic combination of chasiu, spring onions, black fungus, tamago and just a bit of kick with some spicy miso that made for an umami-filled bowl.

Spicy Chasiu (Php390). Ever so adventurous, Hubby opted for a bowl of spice-marinated chasiu, spring onions, black fungus, leeks, tamago and quite a bit of spicy kick from chili oil.

3. You can mix up your Japanese feast with some delicious bites

Hubby and I were sure glad to see that our options are not limited to Uma Uma’s celebrated ramen bowls. We were able to indulge our craving for other Japanese food faves to complement our ramen bowls. (They can also be enjoyed on their own!)

Uma Uma PH
Yakisoba with Karaage (Php410). Golden noodles coated in yaki sauce and served with mouthwatering chunks of crispy Japanese-style chicken.
Uma Uma PH
Chasiu Don (Php350). A bowl of freshly steamed Japanese sticky rice topped with thinly sliced Japanese style roasted pork belly, onions and spring onions with a bit of yaki sauce on the side.
Uma Uma PH
Spicy Salmon Roll (Php315). An exciting combination heat and crunchy texture with flavorful salmon rolled in sticky Japanese rice.
Uma Uma PH
One-Bite Gyoza (Php190). Bite-sized pieces of Japanese potstickers that you can just pop into your mouth after dipping in the aromatic gyoza sauce.

4. It livens up the city’s food scene

Pasay City is known for its amazing nightlife and vibrant food scene. Uma Uma’s fresh and affordable options surely adds to the myriad of gastronomic possibilities in the area.

Novotel’s Prana Indian Cuisine hosts Taj Uncorked: An Indian Champagne Dinner

Indian food has long been celebrated for its creative use of healthy ingredients including aromatic spices, as well as its rich and diverse flavors.

However, there is one aspect of this exotic cuisine that is largely unexplored: how it pairs with western wines.

Well, Novotel Manila Araneta City’s Executive Chef Massimiliano Pauletto recently brought this extraordinary experience to selected guests with Taj Uncorked: An Indian Champagne Dinner held at the hotel’s restaurant, Prana Indian Cuisine.

Together with my husband (an avid lover of Indian food!), I was able to join this gastronomic exploration consisting of dishes especially crafted by Prana’s very own Indian Masterchef Rajan Veeranan and variants of Champagne Deutz Ram’s House of Wine.

Champagne does significantly add to the enjoyment of Indian cuisine, thanks to its versatility; its acidity and bubbly nature complements the complex flavors and contrasts with the rich and creamy textures of various Indian dishes. It also acting as a palate cleanser in between bites, allowing diners to fully savor and appreciate the nuances of every dish. Champagne’s fruity tones also harmonize well with the aromatic herbs and spices used in Indian cooking.

A taste of old Beijing at Dragon Court, Manila Prince Hotel

Ever since the Manila Prince’s Dragon Court reopened its doors last September, I’ve been wanting a taste of its esteemed menu. After all, this gastronomic destination is on a worthy mission: to preserve the restaurant’s cherished signature flavors while introducing a tantalizing array of new dishes, an endeavor that foodie who’s always on the lookout for delicious adventures fully supports.

Old-World Beijing Charm

The Manila Standard aptly described Dragon Court as emanating “old Beijing feels,” a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with. Stepping into this restaurant transported me to a realm that seamlessly blended old-world Beijing charm with the excitement of contemporary Chinese cuisine.

Dragon Court

Immersed in hues of red and gold, Dragon Court exudes an unmistakable aura of traditional grandeur. Dragon motifs, lanterns, and traditional arches gracefully adorn the restaurant, creating an ambiance that’s both regal and inviting. High-backed chairs encircle round tables equipped with iconic lazy Susans, ensuring an enjoyable, communal dining experience.

Well-Suited for a Myriad of Celebrations

Dragon Court proves to be an ideal venue for a myriad of celebrations. From intimate family dinners to larger get-togethers, this restaurant effortlessly caters to diverse occasions, making it a versatile destination for Chinese food enthusiasts seeking not just a meal but a memorable experience.

For those seeking an extra touch of exclusivity, Dragon Court offers private rooms that elevate the dining experience. I discovered that these spaces are not only perfect for intimate gatherings but also serve as splendid venues for Filipino-Chinese engagement ceremonies known as tinghun, adding a cultural and personal touch to special events.

Chinese Culinary Journey

The heart of Dragon Court lies in its culinary offerings, a diverse menu curated by Chef EJ Yap and her team. This tasty collection takes diners on a journey through classic and innovative Chinese delights, some of which I was able to enjoy during a recent visit with a friend.

Dimsum Delights

The dimsum offerings are a testament to the craftsmanship in Dragon Court’s kitchen. From the delicate folds of Xiao Long Bao (Php300/3pcs) to the burst of flavors in the Shrimp and Pork Siu Mai with Crab Roe (Php280/3pcs), each bite is a symphony of taste. The Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (Php240/3pcs), more commonly known as Hakaw, with its generous and succulent filling, further elevated our dimsum experience.

Savoring Soups

I can say that Dragon Court’s soul-warming soup selections certainly started our meal right. The Eight Treasure Wintermelon Soup (Php390), a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, and the Braised Assorted Seafood and Fish Maw Soup (Php320), a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients, showcase the culinary prowess behind each creation.

Satisfying Mains

The main courses at Dragon Court are a celebration of the diverse possibilities inherent in Chinese cuisine. I can’t imagine a Chinese meal without Yang Chow Fried Rice (Php280), and this was no exception, as it pairs well with other delicious dishes such as another classic like the Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple (Php380).

The Vegetarian Stewed Eggplant in Clay Pot (Php320) offered a hearty and flavorful option, while the Braised Grouper Fillet and Vermicelli in Hotpot (Php420) was quite a sensory delight. On the other hand, the Fried Shrimp Ball with Mozzarella Cheese (Php680) presented a delectable surprise.

Toasting to Freedom and Flavor with Liberator Lager at Cafe Romulo

In the annals of Philippine history, the name Carlos P. Romulo is etched in golden letters. This journalist, diplomat, and the first Asian to serve as president of the UN General Assembly left an indelible mark on our nation. His legacy endures through the prestigious restaurant chain operated by his descendants, Romulo Café. But this isn’t your ordinary dining experience; it’s a culinary journey through history and heritage.

Her legacy is carried forward in Romulo Café’s commitment to Filipino cuisine.

Cafe Romulo’s Makati Branch

As Romulo Café expands its footprint, it’s hard to miss the swanky Makati branch on Jupiter Street. This branch is the sophisticated sibling of the first outpost in Quezon City. Ivy and Cecile Almario, the acclaimed designers, have lent their artistic touch to create an ambiance that’s both classy and relaxed.

Brewed using the finest Pilsner malt and American hops, Liberator Lager is a masterpiece that embodies the flavors of freedom. It has just the right balance of malt sweetness and a subtle tropical profile with hints of citrus, passionfruit, and melon. With every sip, you’re tasting history and honor.

The launch of Liberator Lager holds a special place in the hearts of the Romulo family. It coincided with the anniversary of the Leyte Landing, a momentous event in Philippine history. General Douglas MacArthur’s promise of “I shall return” was fulfilled on this day. Carlos P. Romulo played a pivotal role in ensuring the freedom of the Philippines, delivering speeches in America during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in 1944 to keep the U.S. focus on the Pacific. It’s a part of history that deserves to be celebrated.

Exploring Korean Samgyupsal and Japanese Yakiniku

Korean samgyupsal and Japanese yakiniku, while both being East Asian BBQ styles, offer distinct flavors and cooking techniques. Korean samgyupsal typically involves grilling a variety of meats, particularly pork belly, with an array of accompanying side dishes. On the other hand, Japanese yakiniku often includes beef cuts and is characterized by a focus on marinating the meats in savory sauces.

Yoshimeatsu brings the best of both worlds to your table. The fusion of these two distinct styles creates an enticing experience where the bold flavors of Korean spices harmonize with the delicate taste of Japanese marinades.

Pinoy-Style Barbecue at Lola Ote Restaurant

When it comes to finding a place that offers mouthwatering Pinoy-style barbecue that’s both delicious and affordable, Lola Ote Grill and Restaurant in Quezon City is a name that should be on your list. Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at Lola Ote with my officemates, taking a much-deserved break from our daily grind.

The Destination for Down-Home Pinoy-Style Barbecue

Tucked away along 26 Sgt. Esguerra Street, Diliman, Lola Ote Grill and Restaurant is a charming eatery that’s well-known for its iconic 18-inch pork barbecues. The restaurant’s cozy and inviting ambiance provides the perfect setting for a relaxed and “come-as-you-are” dining experience. Lola Ote occupies a former ancestral house, built in the 1960s, which has been thoughtfully transformed into a restaurant. The restaurant recently underwent quite a renovation, improving the establishment’s overall ambiance with more spacious seating areas and lots of natural light.

One of the things that set Lola Ote apart is its rich culinary heritage. Many of the recipes served here have been handed down from the proprietor’s grandmother. This deep-rooted connection to traditional Filipino flavors adds an authentic touch to every dish. It’s a testament to the care and love that goes into preparing each meal.

The real star of the show at Lola Ote is its iconic 18-inch pork barbecues, served on metal skewers. This unique grilling technique ensures that the meat is cooked to perfection from the inside out. The steel skewers themselves have undergone several changes before achieving the current style, resulting in tender, juicy, and flavorful barbecue that you won’t soon forget.

Lunching on a Feast of Pinoy Flavors

Lola Ote caters to different preferences with its diverse menu. In addition to the famous barbecues, we found a range of dishes, each with its unique appeal.

The Lola Ote BBQ (XL) (Php140/stick) is the restaurant’s pièce de résistance. These 18-inch skewers are not only a visual delight but also a true flavor bomb. The metal skewers’ grilling technique ensures that the meat remains juicy and tender while offering that perfect smoky char.

The nostalgic flavors of Isaw Baboy (barbecued pork intestines) (Php40/stick) and Isaw Manok (barbecued chicken intestines) (Php35/stick) take you back to the bustling streets of the Philippines. Served in a cozy setting, these street food favorites offer a trip down memory lane.

Lola Ote also serves up heartiness with classic Lechon Kawali (Pnp480), tender boneless pork belly with crispy skin.

The Pinakbet with Crispy Pork (Php320), on the other hand, provides a taste of tradition. This dish features a medley of squash, long yard beans, ampalaya (bitter gourd), okra, and sweet shrimp paste. The combination of flavors and textures is a true Filipino delight.

About Cafe Mary Grace

Cafe Mary Grace traces its roots to its founder’s passion for baking that dates back to 1983. Mary Grace Dimacali, the creative force behind the brand, started her journey as a young mother with a knack for working with dough and batter. Her delectable creations soon gained popularity among friends and family, leading to the birth of Cafe Mary Grace. Today, it stands as a true embodiment of their love for good food and warm hospitality.

The Charming Ambiance

This relatively newly opened glasshouse branch of Cafe Mary Grace in Arcovia City exudes a homey ambiance. The warm lighting fixtures, a mix of dark wood and colorful tiles, and walls adorned with art pieces and handwritten letters from customers—all contributed to the inviting atmosphere. The glasshouse portion, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, allowed natural light to flood the space, creating a cozy yet refreshing environment.

Brunch Feast Highlights

Our feast at Cafe Mary Grace included a delightful array of dishes that include our classic favorites as well as fresh discoveries.

The Grilled Kesong Puti with Batard Bread (Php238) was a savory start, featuring local white cheese grilled to perfection and topped with garlic, tomato, and olive oil, then served with toasted slices of batard bread. Each bite was a taste of Filipino flavors combined with a touch of elegance.

I always go back to the Mary Grace Mushroom Cream Pasta (Php498 + Php150 for Prosciutto Topping) for its velvety blend of earthy mushrooms, cream, and the salty allure of prosciutto.

My son #ExhibitB, on the other hand, is loyal to the Pasta Amatriciana with Italian Meatballs (Php433), perfectly cooked pasta bathed in a rich tomato sauce, generously adorned with succulent Italian meatballs.

Sating Hubby’s craving for hearty servings of Pinoy food was Cafe Mary Grace’s Toasted Vigan Longganisa All-Day Breakfast (Php502). The deliciously garlicky homemade local sausage offered a burst of flavors, complemented by rosemary garlic fried rice and fried eggs.

And of course, we couldn’t leave without indulging our collective sweet tooth with the Mango Bene (Php278), a luscious “summer-cake” made with frozen layers of meringue, custard cream, and fresh Philippine mangoes.

As if that weren’t enough, we also savored the Strawberry Shortcake (Php278), featuring plump strawberries nestled in whipped cream covering the tenderest sponge cake.
