Unveiling the Essence of Filipino Flavors

At the heart of Manam Comfort Filipino lies a dedication to showcasing the diverse and flavorful traditional Filipino cuisine to a wider audience. The restaurant proudly divides its menu into two parts, catering to both those who crave the familiar and those seeking culinary exploration.

The opposing tastes and preferences of my family for Filipino food find a delicious middle ground during our Sunday brunch at Manam Comfort Filipino in Uptown Mall, BGC.

Classics: A Taste of Tradition

For those seeking a taste of tradition, the “Classics” section of the menu offers a delightful array of familiar Filipino favorites. During a recent Sunday brunch with my family, we immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of flavors, savoring dishes that encapsulate the essence of Filipino culinary heritage.

Laing, a medley of sautéed taro leaves, pork belly bits, coconut cream, chilis, and bagoong, provided a comforting blend of creamy and spicy notes. The interplay of textures and tastes in this classic dish was a testament to the mastery of Filipino flavors.

Ensaladang Pako, featuring fern, salted egg, tomatoes, tinapa flakes, and a tangy house vinaigrette, was a refreshing and vibrant salad. The unique use of fern brought a subtle earthiness that complemented the bright and tangy flavors of the vinaigrette.

We couldn’t resist indulging in the House Crispy Sisig, a sizzling plate of chopped pork jowl and cheek, showcasing the perfect balance of crunch and succulence. The flavors danced on our palates, leaving us craving more.

Camaron Rebosado, with large shrimp marinated in citrus, dipped in batter, and deep-fried to golden perfection, was a crunchy delight. The marriage of flavors between the sweet shrimp and the citrus marinade was nothing short of exquisite.

Twists: A Modern Culinary Adventure

For the adventurous and those eager to experience Filipino flavors in a new light, the “Twists” section of the menu offers an exciting culinary journey.

The Sinigang na Beef Short Rib & Watermelon is a prime example of this creative twist. The tender beef short ribs and vegetables simmered in a tangy and sour broth made with tamarind and watermelon provided an unexpected burst of flavors. The watermelon added a subtle sweetness, elevating the dish to new heights.

Another innovative delight we couldn’t resist was the Crispy Pancit Palabok. Crunchy glass noodles adorned with chicharon, crispy garlic, shrimp, squid, and tinapa flakes, all swimming in a savory shrimp sauce, delivered a symphony of textures and tastes that left our taste buds yearning for more.

Discover Mamma Mia: Home of the 6-foot Pizza Lunga and Italian Culinary Magic!

If you’re seeking to transport your taste buds straight to Italy, Mamma Mia in Uptown Mall, Fort Bonifacio is your ultimate culinary destination. From the moment you step through its doors, you’re greeted by an ambiance reminiscent of an Italian villa, exuding warmth and rustic charm. The airy outdoor dining area, the brick-walled interiors adorned with colorful knickknacks and the dynamic energy from the open kitchen set the scene for an Italian feast straight out of a movie.

A Taste of Italy in BGC

Mamma Mia doesn’t just stop at its decor; it aims to bring the full Italian resto-bar experience to its patrons. The brainchild of Giulius Iapino, owner of Rigatoni Corp., this place offers a one-stop-shop experience. As the day progresses, the atmosphere evolves – from morning coffee to lively nights with dim lights, louder music, and DJs spinning tracks, mirroring the dynamic ambiance of Italy.

The core of Mamma Mia’s mission is to encapsulate the essence of a family-owned trattoria in Italy, a place where great food brings people together for social gatherings, much like a mother’s kitchen. The owner, Giulius, noted the gap in all-day offerings in the Philippines and decided to bring a piece of Rome to the country. This concept allows customers to enjoy meals throughout the day and even transition seamlessly into a party vibe as the night unfolds.

Italian Comfort Food: A Mother’s Love on a Plate

Gulius has noted that in the Philippines, a mother’s love often translates to sumptuous meals that leave you feeling welcome and satisfied. Mamma Mia aims to encapsulate this comfort within its restaurant, presenting a diverse array of Italian classics that range from wood-fired pizzas to hearty entrees. Each dish is meticulously prepared using top-tier ingredients and traditional cooking techniques, embracing the heart and soul of Italian comfort food.

Every bite at Mamma Mia takes you on a culinary journey through the regions of Italy. The commitment to authenticity extends to the use of fresh herbs, imported meats, cold cuts, cheeses, and premium olive oil. These elements ensure an unparalleled dining experience that captures the true essence of Italian cuisine, making Mamma Mia a haven for Italian food enthusiasts.

The Great Pizza Eating Contest: Are You Up for the Challenge?

Recently, Mamma Mia introduced a thrilling challenge to the #WeLoveToEatPH community, a group of dedicated foodies in the metro. The challenge was to conquer the Great Pizza Eating Contest featuring the star of the show – the Pizza Lunga, a remarkable 6-foot long pizza. This colossal pizza is divided into three mouthwatering sections: Margherita with Anchovies, Crema Tartufo, and Pepperoni.

Teams were tasked to devour as many slices of the Pizza Lunga as possible within a 30-minute timeframe. Though no team managed to polish off their pizza slices entirely (given its impressive size!), the event was a delightful and entertaining experience for both the contestants and the supportive audience, including myself.

Think you can outdo my foodie friends? Take on the challenge yourself and savor the Pizza Lunga for just Php1950.

Cafe Mary Grace, Uptown BGC: A Cozy Haven for the Fam’s Sunday Brunch

Cafe Mary Grace may have been dubbed the quintessential “tita place,” but I can’t help but embrace the delicious comfort it offers to its diners. And to tell you a secret: I’m not the only one in my family who does!

Ever since Hubby discovered his favorite pasta and sandwich combination at Cafe Mary Grace in SM City East Ortigas, he has oftentimes spearheaded family meals at its other branches.

One of our Sunday brunches after attending Mass was no exception, which we had at Cafe Mary Grace in Uptown Mall, BGC.

Cafe Mary Grace
A Rich Heritage

Cafe Mary Grace is more than just a café; it is the realization of a passion for baking that started in 1983. Mary Grace Dimacali, the creative force behind the brand, began her journey as a young mother with a knack for working with dough. Starting with fruitcakes during Christmas, her delectable creations soon gained popularity among friends and family. Encouraged by her biggest supporter, Mary Grace expanded her reach by participating in bazaars, where her airy ensaymadas and cheese rolls became instant favorites.

As the bazaars thrived, Mary Grace’s children, Chiara, Gabriel, Raffy, Adrian, and Mian, realized the brand’s immense potential. In 2006, they took a leap of faith and opened the first Mary Grace Cafe in Serendra, BGC. The cafe became a true embodiment of their passion for good food and warm hospitality. Today, Cafe Mary Grace in Uptown Mall, BGC carries on the tradition, providing a haven for families seeking a memorable Sunday brunch experience.

Ambiance and Decor

This Cafe Mary Grace branch embraces its diners with a sense of home. The warm lighting, tasteful interiors, and a calm yet energizing atmosphere create a perfect setting for relaxation and connection. The modern Filipino decor, with its wooden accents and vibrant colors, reflects the cafe’s commitment to celebrating local culture. As you dine, you’ll notice dainty lamps and chandeliers adorning the ceilings, and heartfelt messages of appreciation from previous diners gracing the tables.

Teishoku Sets at Tendon Kohaku, Uptown Mall

Food destinations abound in Bonifacio Global City, giving foodies that frequent the area with an exciting array of options for gastronomic adventures.

Uptown Mall, for example, is the site of one such establishment: Tendon Kohaku.

A member of the Mugen Group which also manages other Japanese restaurant brands such as UCC Cafe, Mitsuyado Seimen, MOS Burger and Coco Ichibanya, Tendon Kohaku specializes in tendon, a wordplay on tempura (lightly battered and deep-fried meat, seafood or vegetables) and donburi (“rice bowl”).

Here, Japanese food lovers can look forward to an elevated tempura experience, made possible by four elements:

  • Fresh Ingredients. Only the freshest ingredients, chosen with professional care according to exacting standards, are used in Tendon Kohaku’s tempura dishes.
  • Tempura Batter. Tendon Kohaku’s tempura better is using premium-grade flour and employing traditional tempura techniques to produce a coating that is light, crispy and flavorful.
  • Cooking Technology. The restaurant uses a high blend of sesame and cooking oil applied with a special filtration system that keeps it clean and light for cooking.
  • Secret Sauce. Tendon Kohaku’s two signature sauces are made in-house using a special blend of spices to create a distinctively sweet-savory flavor. The Sweet sauce is crafted to balance out the saltiness of the tempura while the Spicy sauce does the same with an additional spicy kick.

To give my daughter a change of scene away from her workplace nearby, I decided to treat her to lunch at Tendon Kohaku.

Our meal started with the complementary Japanese tea, available hot and iced.

We opted to get teishoku – Japanese set meals that already include rice, tuna sashimi, tamago rolls and potato salad – quite a complete and nourishing meal that combines interesting flavors and textures.

My order was the Tempura Teishoku (Php590) which consist of various tempura such as Chicken Breast, Wild Tiger Prawns, Squid, Crabstick, Green Beans, Shiitake, Young Corn and Pumpkin accompanied by tempura sauce.
