Exotic Filipino Dishes and Local Art: Why Balaw-Balaw Restaurant Should Be on Your List

If you’re a foodie and an art lover, you need to add Balaw Balaw Restaurant and in Angono, Rizal to your must-visit list.

This quaint eatery has long been an Angono landmark, thanks to its menu of exotic Filipino dishes and its extensive collection of Filipino art and artifacts.

After learning that our balikbayan tita has a hankering for the dish called kuhol sa gata (snail in coconut milk), Hubby and I set about looking for a restaurant that serves it which we can go to as we take our tita on a tour of Rizal.

After scanning through several articles from online publications and blogs, all touting the food and the unique ambiance of Balaw-Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery, we gamely included it in our itinerary.

A visit to this establishment is also special to me, as I’m a foodie who likes doscovering new places to eat and recommend to my friends and I also like checking out local artworks.

So if you’re like me, you should definitely venture into Angono for a visit to this restaurant. Here are some reasons why:

The Food

Balaw Balaw Restaurant is known for its exotic and authentic Filipino dishes, which are not commonly found in other restaurants. Their signature dish, Balaw Balaw, is a fermented shrimp paste that is a must-try for adventurous eaters. The restaurant also offers other dishes like “adobong kamaru” (adobo-style crickets), and “frogs legs” (fried frog legs).

During our visit, we indulged our tita’s craving for ginataang kuhol (₱195), or snails cooked in coconut milk. We also went for more mainstream dishes such as inihaw na baboy (₱295) – grilled pork belly, and laing at gabi (₱270) – taro leaves cooked in coconut milk.

To cater to our monster-sized appetites and to introduce a variety of dishes in one fell swoop, we also ordered a medium minaluto (₱1,250), a bilao group meal good for three to four persons consisting of steamed rice, chicken adobo, grilled squid, battered fried fish, halabos na hipon, adobong kangkong, crab legs, clams, fresh tomatoes and salted egg.

Tittos Latin BBQ & Brew: Your destination for tasty #TacoTuesdays

Tuesdays have been designated as Taco Day, which has grown to be a beloved custom in Mexican restaurants and bars. Although the history of Taco Tuesdays is unclear, some historians think that it began in California in the 1980s. On Tuesdays, which are typically slow dining days, several Mexican restaurants in California were at that time finding it difficult to draw patrons. Some restaurants started discounting tacos on Tuesdays to increase business, and the practice gradually spread.

Over the years, Taco Tuesdays have evolved into a cultural phenomenon, with many people looking forward to this weekly tradition as a way to enjoy delicious tacos and socialize with friends or family. Many restaurants and bars now offer Taco Tuesdays, often featuring a variety of taco options.

From fear to flour power: overcoming baking anxiety at IDIM DIY Bakery

Baking is a beautiful artform that brings joy and warmth to people’s homes (not to mention a lot of sweetness!). However, it can be an intimidating task for newbies.

One of the biggest reasons for this is the precision involved in baking. Unlike cooking, where you can adjust the seasoning and taste as you go along, baking requires precise measurements and timing. A small mistake in the measurement or timing can lead to a disaster, and this can be daunting for newbies who are not used to working with such precision.

IDIM DIY Bakery
IDIM DIY Bakery
IDIM DIY Bakery

Another reason why baking can seem daunting to wannabe bakers is the number of ingredients involved. Baking often requires a long list of ingredients, some of which may not be familiar to newbies. This can be overwhelming and lead to a sense of confusion and anxiety. Plus, some ingredients may be expensive, and newbies may be hesitant to invest in them, especially if they are not sure if they will use them again.

Lastly, the equipment needed for baking can also be intimidating to newbies. Baking requires a range of specialized equipment, such as mixers, baking pans, and measuring cups. Newbies may not have all the equipment they need and may be unsure of what they need to buy. Moreover, some equipment can be expensive, and newbies may be hesitant to invest in them, especially if they are not sure if they will continue baking.

Yes, baking can be intimidating, especially if you’re new to it. However, there are many joys to be found in overcoming that newbie’s fear. Here are some of them:

The sense of accomplishment.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of successfully baking your first loaf of bread or a batch of cookies from scratch. Overcoming your fear of baking can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment that will carry over into other areas of your life.

Learning new skills.

Baking is a skill that can take time to master, but the process of learning can be a lot of fun. Discovering new techniques and tricks to make your baked goods even better can feel very rewarding.

The satisfaction of creating something delicious.

Baking is a creative process, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about creating something that not only looks beautiful but tastes amazing too. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with different flavors and ingredients, and create something truly unique.

Sharing with others.

Baking is a wonderful way to bring people together, whether it’s sharing a warm loaf of bread with your family or bringing a batch of cookies to share with your coworkers. Overcoming your fear of baking can open up new opportunities for you to share your creations with others.

Developing a new hobby.

Baking can be a great hobby to take up, especially if you’re looking for something that’s both fun and rewarding. You’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques, and develop a passion for baking that can last a lifetime (to the delight of your fam and friends, I’m sure!).

With such benefits awaiting the baking newbie, any fear of baking should be overcome right away! Well, a recently opened bakery in SM Megamall is ready to help do just that!

IDIM (I Did It Myself) DIY Bakery is the first Do-It-Yourself Bakery in Asia which originated in Taiwan and recently made its way to our shores. Currently the number one DIY bakery, it provides a welcoming and supportive environment that helps newbie bakers address their baking fears and build their confidence.

One way in which IDIM DIY Bakery addresses the fear of precision is by providing step-by-step instructions and guidance. Tablets with detailed yet easy-to-understand recipes, complete with demo videos, are provided to the newbie bakers. Experienced baking coaches are also on-hand to help newbies understand the importance of measuring ingredients precisely and guide them through the process. These help newbies feel more confident in their abilities and reduces their anxiety.

On the other hand, IDIM DIY Bakery addresses the newbie’s fear of having to stock up on so many ingredients is by providing a range of premium ingredients already on-hand, easily accessible within the bakery. These include pre-mixes, separated eggs and pre-squeezed juices that newbies need to create delicious baked goods, without having to worry about difficult preparation techniques. This reduces the complexity of the baking process and makes it more accessible to newbies.

Lastly, IDIM DIY Bakery addresses the fear of having to invest in costly baking tools by already providing all the necessary equipment for baking. Newbies do not need to buy expensive equipment or worry about not having the right tools. The bakery provides a wide range of equipment, including mixers, baking pans, and measuring cups, as well as baking coaches to guide newbies through the process of using these gizmos. This helps newbies feel more comfortable and confident in their abilities, and reduces the barriers to entry for baking.

9 reasons why Hashi Donburi is a must-try restaurant for Japanese food lovers

If you’re a Japanese food lover and you’re looking for a new restaurant to try, you can hie yourself off to this hidden gem along Mother Ignacia Avenue in Quezon City.

Here are nine reasons why you should dine at Hashi Donburi:

1. Japanese flavors made accessible

Hashi Donburi offers an extensive menu of Japanese dishes including rice bowls, sushi, sashimi, tempura, ramen, and more, all of which are prepared using traditional techniques and ingredients that the owner – ex-OFW Aldy Mancio – learned from Japanese mentor during his overseas stint setting up one of the first Japanese restaurants in the Middle East back in the 80s.

He parlayed his kitchen prowess into a thriving business back home when he opened a ramen and donburi shop in Dapitan, Manila, catering to the students in the area.

The restaurant’s name is a combination of two Japanese words. “Hashi” means chopsticks, which are a common utensil for eating Japanese food, while “donburi” refers to a bowl of rice topped with various ingredients.

Soon, another branch opened along Mother Ignacia Avenue in Quezon City to cater to the professionals and families in the area. Despite going through a rough patch during the lockdowns brought about by the pandemic, Andy and his team kept Hashi Donburi open, ready to serve their loyal clientele and new foodie fans with the restaurant’s takes on Japanese food.

2. Cozy and inviting atmosphere

The restaurant has a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with wooden furniture, Japanese-inspired decor, and warm lighting that exudes a minimalist-industrial ambiance but also creates a comfortable and relaxing dining experience. It’s the perfect spot for a casual lunch or dinner.

Revitalizing the #ReturnToOffice day with lunch at Ombu Kusina

I’ve finally (and with quite a bit of resistance) returned to the office.

While I may gripe about the traffic and the long commute from my home to my workplace near Tomas Morato in Quezon City, I honestly can’t complain about the expanded variety of dining choices come lunchtime.

So when the lunch hour came, my officemates and I trooped to our go-to place for modern Filipino cuisine to revitalize ourselves for the rest of our workday with good food and good vibes.

Culinary delights at SilverSpoon QC

Being a foodie myself, there are few pleasures in life as universal as the enjoyment of a delicious meal. From childhood memories of dinners with my family to those first kilig dates at fancy restaurants, dining on good food has the ability to bring not just satiety, but a sense of joy.

And for people like me who are passionate about food and all its delicious possibilities, there’s no better feeling than sharing their gustatory adventures with others.

That’s what I did when on the first day of our #ReturnToOffice, I took my teammates to one of my favorite places in the Tomas Morato area for our first #HappyLunch after nearly three years: SilverSpoon Kitchenette.

SilverSpoon Kapampangan

Located in one of the side streets off Tomas Morato Avenue, this cozy little kitchenette is a hidden gem that has been making waves in the local food scene.

The kitchenette is run by a team of passionate foodies who are dedicated to bringing dishes that are not only delicious but also made with the freshest ingredients. They source their produce from local farmers, ensuring that every dish is packed with the goodness of the season. They also instituted a quarterly showcase of classic Pinoy food from various regions to make these heritage dishes more accessible to their clientele.

However, for this particular food adventure, my coworkers and I focused on SilverSpoon’s pastas and mains, which included:

Creamy Spinach Ravioli (Php365). Handcrafted ravioli stuffed with creamy spinach filling served on a flavorful sauce bed.

Pasta al Nero (Php330). Squid ink pasta tossed with crisp vegetables and calamari.

But the food is only part of the story. SilverSpoon Kitchenette is a warm and welcoming space that’s perfect for everything from a quick lunch for office workers to a leisurely dinner with friends.

The decor is simple and minimalist but has a charming vibe that makes you feel right at home. Whether you’re sitting at the bar with your coffee and a sandwich or feasting with your buddies at one of the cozy tables, you’ll be feeling quite at ease.

Just like old times at SGS House of Minis, Greenhills

One of my most cherished childhood memories is celebrating important occasions and milestones with a special steak dinner.

Whether it’s a significant accomplishment (a school award, a new job or promotion, etc.), a birthday or anniversary, marking the event through a multi-course meal at the House of Minis is just the ticket!

That was how I was introduced to this restaurant. During my childhood, important family celebrations were marked by our special meal at the local House of Minis along C5 in Pasig City, where I experienced what was to me then a markedly leveled-up way of dining. In contrast to fast food outlets where self-service was the rule, or the family-style casual dining places where all the dishes are served together, this steakhouse serves its food one course after another.

Since it’s been quite a while since we’ve dined at House of Minis, we decided to have lunch at its branch in Greenhills when we were out for some holiday shopping.

The experience starts with ordering our mains (regular-sized T-bone steaks, grilled to medium doneness), then we waited for our courses to arrive.

The meal starts with hot creamy soup served with house-baked dinner rolls accompanied by unsalted butter.

Next comes a light starter salad of fresh vegetables with Thousand Island dressing.

We ordered some starches to go with our steaks: Hubby opted for a serving of gravy mashed potatoes, while, for me, good ole’ steam rice is the way to go!

Then our steaks made their grand entrance.

These are slabs of perfectly grilled fork-tender T-bone cuts beef served on hot plates with some buttered vegetables on the side. When doused with the house gravy, their hissing sound and appetizing aroma sure got us salivating.

This is a meal that is to meant to be hurried over so we took our time in enjoying our steak meal.

Afterwards, we opted against getting coffee after our meal but instead went for servings of vanilla ice cream.

(Actually, Hubby gamely gave his ice cream serving to me! Awww!)

While some aspects of this steak meal (such as the restaurant location and serving sizes of some of the courses) may have changed, I’m glad to say that it feels pretty much like old times at this House of Minis.

Got a similar steakhouse childhood memory? Relive it at House of Minis in Greenhills!

Lunch at Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant Nikkei Robata, BGC

Did you know that Japanese culinary traditions have a strong influence on Peruvian food?

As it has the second largest ethnic Japanese population in South America, brought about by Japanese immigration starting in the late 19th century, it is hardly surprising that Peruvian cuisine would feature more than just a few Japanese touches.

Hokkaido’s robotayaki (the method of charcoal-grilling meat, seafood and other ingredients to imbue them with a delicious flavor and smoky aroma) makes its influence felt in Peruvian cuisine in the recently opened Nikkei Robata branch in Uptown, Bonifacio Global City.

Whether enjoying the hustle-and-bustle of the street in its al fresco area or relaxing in its well-appointed interiors, foodies can look forward to expertly grilled top-quality meats and seafood that makes for a deliciously satisfying meal.

During our errand day in BGC, my daughter #ExhibitA and I decided to have lunch at Nikkei Robata, where we enjoyed:

Chips (Complimentary). Crispy potato chips served with a tangy cream dip.

Specialty Drinks (₱180 each). Sometimes, the adventure of our day comes in the form of an unusual drink that accompanies our meal. While these (thankfully!) do not contain alcohol, they added a refreshing aspect to our lunch.

Okinawa Lady. Triple berry juice layered with lime juice and sugar syrup.

Mr. Ozaki. Layering of freshly squeezed lemonade and Nikkei Robata’s Premium Black Tea.

Dining here might be a bit pricey but, from its upscale yet comfy surroundings to its unique menu of Japanese-Peruvian dishes, Nikkei Robata certainly promises a gastronomic adventure!

Check it out for yourself!
