Fresh juices at Pure Nectar, Katipunan

Feel like making a healthy change?

At Pure Nectar, the offshoot of popular mall juice stand Fruit Magic, you can get yourself fresh juices made through contemporary cold-pressed juicing. This method makes use of hydraulic presses to extract juice from fruits and vegetables.

Most of its branches are located in mall foodcourts but the branch in Loyola Heights may be considered free-standing, being easily accessible from the street. Aside from Pure Nectar’s drinks, this store also offers healthy meals such as rice bowls and tacos.

After having lunch with my fellow bloggers at 47East’s Discovery Cafe, I dropped by this Pure Nectar branch a few meters away to take advantage of a Booky Buy One Get One deal which gave me two bottles of Pure Nectar’s Cold Brew Cashew Latte for only Php120.

Pure Necta, Katipunan

These drinks are made with cold brew coffee and cashew nut milk and light sweetening syrup. Since the coffee is cold-brewed, it has lower acidity than regular coffee, perfect for those suffering from acid reflux. This energizing drink is also a good antioxidant. The taste and mouthfeel of the cashew nut milk are new, and quite welcome, experiences for me.

As luck would have it, the store has in-store promos which also provides Buy One Get One deals on other drink variants. I got two bottles of Buko Pandan for only Php60.

Pure Necta, Katipunan

Made from coconut milk, pandan extract and light sweetening syrup, this drink is good for those fighting bad cholesterol.

Being only lightly sweetened, it took me some time to acclimate my sweetness-conditioned palate to both drinks. For those who are already into juice cleanses, these drinks would probably be quite sweet already.

Pure Necta, Katipunan

Pure Nectar, Katipunan

Since the juices contain no additives or preservatives, these were sensitive to heat and sunlight. As soon as I got home, I immediately placed them in the refrigerator. They only keep for up to three days in the fridge but, as my son developed a liking for the Buko Pandan juice, they were soon consumed.

If you’re exploring ways to eat healthy and get more nutrients into your system, do check out Pure Nectar’s juices. Juice cleanse sets for as low as Php1,240 are also available. More details on these are available at Pure Nectar’s website.

This Pure Nectar branch is located at Ground Floor, MQI Building, Rosa Alvero Street corner Esteban Abada Street, Loyola Heights, Quezon City, open Mondays to Saturdays from 8am to 9pm, and Sundays from 9am to 8pm.

Neighborhood milk tea at Pig Tea, Sta Lucia

The milk tea craze in the metro is still going strong with new entrants continuing to appear and compete with more established brands.

While the opening of new Taiwan-based brands in high-traffic malls to establish their presence in the country are sure to make news, homegrown brands are also quietly popping up in their respective pocket areas to serve their local markets.

One such brand is Pig Tea, a new milk tea and juice bar that set up shop along the main road of Countryside Village in Pasig, just a few blocks away from my house.

Pig Tea, Santa Lucia

To get your drinks at Pig Tea, all you have to do are:

  • Choose your tea. Your choices include the classics, premium drinks and fruit teas.
  • Choose your desired level of sweetness, from 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%.
  • Choose your sinkers. Your choices include pearls, nata de coco, brown sugar jelly, egg pudding and popping boba.
  • After all that, you now have a cup of Piggilicious Pig Tea.

Last week, I gave in to my milk tea craving and dropped by this small and unassuming tea shop to get some 12oz cups for me and my household.

Brown Sugar Milk Tea with Triple Sinkers (brown sugar jelly, egg pudding and pearls) (Php59) for me.

Chocolate Milk Tea with Pearls (Php49) for my little boy #ExhibitB.

Pig Tea, Santa Lucia

A few day’s later, at my daughter’s request, we dropped by on our way home to get another set of 16oz drinks.

Classic Milk Tea with Pearls (Php59) topped with Rock Salt and Cheese (Php16) for me.

Pig Tea, Santa Lucia

Hokkaido Milk Tea with Pearls (Php59) for #ExhibitA.

Pig Tea, Santa Lucia

Cookies and Creamy Puff (Php75), one of Pig Tea’s Milk Tea Cake Collection, for #ExhibitB.

Pig Tea, Santa Lucia

Taro Milk Tea (Php69) for yaya.

Pig Tea, Santa Lucia

Pig Tea’s drinks proved to have the premium taste and mouthfeel of the more well-known and imported brands, owing to being made fresh every day from tea leaves. Despite this, they are quite affordable, with drinks costing no more than Php100 each.

Now, my family and I won’t have to venture far to satisfy our milk tea cravings!

Fun and fresh flavors at Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Just when you thought that all possibilities for tea drinks have been thoroughly exhausted, here comes a tea brand from Macao with something new up its sleeve.

Juice Cubi began its Philippine invasion at its first branch at SM Ecoland in Davao, and just this week, established its presence in Metro Manila by opening its store at the SM MOA Complex.

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Juice Cubi definitely has a fun and fresh take on tea drinking. From its pastel-themed and highly Instagrammable store accented with its alien mascot Cubi, to the cute and reusable tumblers and cups its drinks and served in, to the drinks themselves, which usually have visual or taste elements that tickle the senses.

During its Media Day, Juice Cubi treated attendees to its pretty and refreshing drinks; there’s really something for everyone. No matter the mood or the craving, Juice Cubi allows you to express yourself in every cup!

Just take a look at some of the drinks I was able to sample during the event:

Starry Night (Php160). Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpiece, this drink that turns from blue to purple has starry edible glitters.

Lady in Red (Php160). A tribute to femmes fatale everywhere, this drink has the strong heady taste that excites and thrills.

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Ocean Breeze (Php150). A drink for those who yearn for the sea, its white layer approximates wind-blown clouds racing across the blue waves.

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Dark Knight (Php160). Feel like a caped crusader? This boldly flavored drink is the one for you!

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Caramel Cheese Milk Tea (Php120). Juice Cubi’s signature milk tea topped with a foamy layer of caramel cheese.

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Cubi Special Milk Tea (Php140). What makes this drink so special? Is it the subtle sweetness that’s pleasantly light on the tongue? Is it the slight tartness from the layers of yogurt? Or is it the fact that despite its name, this drink does not actually contain milk? You decide.

Juice Cubi, SM MOA

Juice Cubi is definitely a welcome addition to the tea and beverage shops in the metro. More than ever, exciting choices for refreshing drinks abound and I just couldn’t be happier!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stay long enough to sample the other flavors. But hey, that’s what the next visits are for. 🙂

Many thanks to the management and crew of Juice Cubi for having us and for the wonderful drinks!

Zee Sine brings the best of Bollywood to SKY

Did you know that Bollywood is actually the world’s largest film industry in terms of number of feature films produced?

Bollywood is the more commonly applied term to the Indian Hindi-language film industry. It is also one of the largest centers of film production in the world, with an annual output of 1,986 films in 2017. It also outstrips Hollywood in ticket sales with a reported 3.6 billion tickets sold worldwide in 2001 compared to Hollywood’s 2.6 billion tickets sold.

This industry has produced many onscreen luminaries over the years, with a lot of its current top stars also becoming globally recognized actors and actresses. These include Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Hritik Roshan, Kareen Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and even former beauty queens Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai.

Today, Filipinos can view many of their outstanding feature films dubbed in Tagalog on Zee Sine.

Developed with the tastes and likes of the Filipino audience in mind, Zee Sine has a wide range of content – from drama, comedy, romance, action, thriller and musical – all carefully selected based on stories relatable to the Pinoy audience.

In Zee Sine, the localization process goes as far as creating movie themes such as Unli Tawa Monday for comedies, Hari ng Aksyon Thursday for action flicks, Kilig Monday for romances, Pinoy Bollywood Box Office for blockbusters, Star of the Month which focuses on a key Bollywood actor and Bollywood Divas which give tribute to the gorgeous ladies in the industry.

Zee Sine viewers can also expect three original movies and three original drama series that feature the latest love teams from India on weekdays. On weekends, they can look forward to five original movies, three movie premieres every month.

In a recent media launch event held at Restaurant 9501, representatives of local press as well as lifestyle and entertainment bloggers got a sneak peek of the myriad of movie choices that Zee Sine has to offer.

The attendees were also treated to the bold flavors of Indian dishes prepared by 9501’s Chef Richard Aranas especially for this occasion which included Hummus di Tahini with Chapatti bread, Vegetable Samosas, Aloo Gobi (Potatoes and Cauliflower sauteed in spices), Chicken Tandoori, Beef Vindaloo and the coconut rice pudding dessert Kheer.

According to Harish Goyal, CEO of Zee International Asia Pacific and Africa, Pinoys share the love of color and music in cinema with their Indian counterparts. They can catch these and more in Bollywood movies which feature musical numbers every thirty minutes.

Liza Ginting, country head of Zee Entertainment in the Philippines, cited the similarities of Hindi and Pinoy cultures, such as the supremacy of the mother in the household, which will anchor the appeal of Bollywood movies to local audiences.

SKY’s integrated marketing head Gidgette Faustino, on the other hand, lauds the Pinoy’s openness to global content and sense of adventure when it comes to foreign shows. These will drive SKY to continue bringing more shows and content through its pay TV and broadband platforms.

Roasted brown sugar + cheese cream at Chachago, Tomas Morato

And the invasion of the Taiwanese milk tea brands continue with another one setting up shops in the country: Chachago.

I first heard of this brand when my boss insisted on dropping by its nearby shop along Tomas Morato after out lunch out.

Chachago, Tomas Morato

This branch is basically suited for take outs and not really hanging out. It occupies a small space in Pares Retiro with a small and cramped sitting area where you can wait for your drink.

Chachago offers a brown sugar series of drinks which is quite on-trend right now. These usually have milk as its base with its pearl sinkers and sides of the cup doused in rich brown sugar syrup (hence those “tiger” stripes). To enjoy this drink with a good balance of flavors, you have to shake the cup to distribute the brown sugar syrup into the milk.

Now, aside from the brown sugar syrup, my interest actually lies in the cheese cream that accompanies some of its drinks. It is a l layer of salty-sweet cream cheese whipped to a light and foamy consistency. I’ve always been a fan of cream cheese so when cheese cream started appearing on beverages, I just knew I had to have it.

I’ve tried two of Chachago’s brown sugar drinks with cheese foam:

Roasted Brown Sugar Cacao with Salted Cheese Cream (Php140).

Chachago, Tomas Morato

Roasted Brown Sugar Tea with Salted Cheese Cream (Php120)

Chachago, Tomas Morato

I think the cheese cream works a lot better in the tea-based drink rather in the chocolate-based drink. In the cacao beverage, both the flavor of dark chocolate and that of the cheese cream are too strong to complement each other.

At some point, when I’ve weaned myself away from my cheese cream addiction, I might try more of Chachago’s offerings.

I dream of summer at Bubba Lab, Lamp Quarters

With the intermittent bursts of rain in the metro, I found myself reminiscing about sunshine and summer.

A few blessed weeks before the start of rainy weather were my first two visits to Lamp Quarters in Marikina. On both those occasions, I decided to cool down and chill out at the tea store located there called Bubba Lab.

Bubba Lab, Lamp Quarters

Bubba Lab, Lamp Quarters

Bubba Lab, Lamp Quarters

Bubba Lab’s concept is that of a laboratory where various elements are mixed and matched by its resident “scienTEAsts” to come up with exciting concoctions to delight its customers who are affectionately called “Labmates.” From the test-tubes, beakers and bunsen burners that decorate the area, to the menu presented as a periodic table of elements, Bubba Lab’s premises present a unique experience for tea lovers.

On my first visit, I opted for the basic drink: a Bubba Lab Milk Tea (Php100/Php110). The tea and milk flavors meshed well together and the pearls were pleasantly chewy.

Bubba Lab, Lamp Quarters

On my next visit, I had my daughter #ExhibitA with me. I had a Thai Milk Tea (Php100/Php110) which was boldly flavored with Thai herbs and condensed milk, while #ExhibitA got a fruity and refreshing Blueberry Tea (Php90/Php100) for herself. We enjoyed our drinks as we whiled away the midday heat.

The arrival of the rainy season hasn’t diminished my craving for milk tea.

So I definitely wouldn’t mind coming back here to learn about and sample more of Bubba Lab’s tea concoctions… rain or shine.

Thai mookata combines the grilling and hotpot in one crafty cooking method.

If your group wants to taste some exotic soups through the hotpot steamboat, just add Php99 for one soup or Php159 for two soups for hotpot per table. Oh, and be sure to coat that mookata grill with some fat before grilling your meats so they won’t stick! Also, the juices from the grill will fall from the mookata straight into the boiling soup which will add more flavor to the broth.

Four In Love, SM Manila

All those bold and spicy flavors are sure to work up a thirst. Fortunately, you can just add Php39/person for free-flowing softdrinks!

You and your group can enjoy all these for two hours, more than enough time to eat your fill of your favorites. Be sure to finish off all your meats, though; leftovers will be charged Php300 per 100 grams.

Hyped up lemonade at The Citrus Farm, SM East Ortigas

Did you know that lemonade appeared in written history through Egyptian accounts dated around 1000 AD? It was believed that lemons were introduced in this region through trade with Asia. The drink was made with lemons, dates and honey and was widely popular with the common folk.

Together with other citrus-based food and drinks, lemonade is touted as healthy due to its high concentration of vitamin C.

Today, it remains a popular drink with many restaurants offering it as part of their beverage menu.

Well, personally, I sometimes find lemonade a little too basic, you know?

Fortunately, there are lemonade bars such as The Citrus Farm that hypes up the humble lemonade into creatively appetizing concoctions. This store located in my neck of the woods, inside SM City East Ortigas, makes its lemonade drinks from freshly squeezed lemons everyday, giving thirsty mall-goers exciting twists to try. It even has some seats where customer can take a load off while they enjoy their drinks.

Korean BBQ Lunch at Geonbae, Tomas Morato

The battle for supremacy among Korean barbecue joints rages on and Geonbae Modern Korean Bar and Grill puts up quite a fight.

Considering my affinity towards K-BBQ, it’s ironic that my foray here was by accident. My coworkers and I were planning to go to another restaurant nearby which happened to be closed for lunch on that day.

We scouted the area for another place to eat and found ourselves walking to Geonbae.

The restaurant’s name was coined from the Korean term for “cheers” or “bottom’s up.” From its dimly lit interiors with spotlights on the grill and the vibrantly colorful accent decor, Geonbae presents itself as a hip n’ happenin’ place for friends to hang out together while indulging their cravings for Korean barbecue.

Given our brief lunch hour, we decided to just go for Geonbae’s Php499 package which include unlimited refills of meats such as samgyeopsal (plain, spicy yakiniku, ginger, gochujang), smoked pork belly, spicy yakiniku pork ribs, spicy yakiniku moksal, herb pork jowl, pork bulgogi, pork intestine, sausage, woosamgyeop (plain, oyster, gochujang) and ginger chicken breast. To be honest, the sheer number of meats was already quite overwhelming and we found ourselves gravitating towards tried-and-true variants such as plain samgyeopsal and woosamgyeop.

I just have to say: Geonbae really holds up well in comparison to other Korean barbecue joints in the area in terms of ambiance, variety of offerings and value for money. It also does well when it comes to service: the dishes are served and refill requests are seen to quite promptly.

And since my coworkers and I availed of a Booky Prime privilege that gave us a Buy 3 Get 1 deal on our meal, we ended up paying leas than Php420 each for our meal. Not bad, huh?
