Enjoy Thai milk tea at home with Jelly G

Despite the increasing frequency of rain showers in the metro, the times when the sunshine peeks through the clouds are the instances when we need something sweet and refreshing to quench our thirst, right?

Have you ever tried Thai milk tea? Unlike the more prevalent boba milk teas, Thai milk teas have actually been around a lot longer, have a myriad of health benefits and are also available in wondrous variety.

Yummy sushi galore from Salmon HQ

Since I belong to a family of Japanese food lovers, it’s hardly surprising that I would develop a liking for sushi.

Traditionally made with vinegared rice (sushi-meshi) combined with other ingredients (neta) such as (often raw) seafood and vegetables, sushi has become showcases for the sushi chef’s creativity and ingenuity.

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

During pre-pandemic times, we usually needed to venture all the way to our go-to Japanese restaurants to get a taste of our favorite sushi variants.

But with restrictions on movement and dining out within the metro limiting the choices available, I’m glad that innovative food entrepreneurs have ventured into sushi delivery such as the people behind Salmon HQ.

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

This New Manila, QC-based enterprise specialized in delivering fresh salmon sashimi right to the doorstep of Japanese food lovers.

It soon expanded its product offerings to include the latest food trends, incorporating its fresh seafood ingredients into delectable creations, well-suited for delivery.

The Sushi Bakes.

Sushi bakes are deconstructions of the maki (sushi rolls) where, instead of rolling the sushi rice and the sushi fillings and wrapping them in nori (dried seaweed) sheets, they are layered on a baking pan and cooked in an oven. Sushi bakes are enjoyed by scooping out some of the dish and folding them into small nori squares.

Salmon HQ

Similar to traditional maki, the sushi bake offers a lot of possibilities in incorporating tantalizing tastes and textures into the dish.

I was able to try out samplers of sushi bakes from Salmon HQ, which included:

The Crunchy California (a variant of the OG sushi bake with kani and mango) and Unagi Madness (with slivers of freshwater eel and generous sprinklings of roe).

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Aburi Salmon Scallops Ebi (torched slivers of salmon mixed with scallops and shrimp) and Softshell Crab and Ebi (wonderfully textured combination of shrimp and softshell crab).

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Salmon HQ

Prices for the full trays of Salmon HQ’s sushi bakes start at Php500 (for small) and Php1,200 (for large).

The Pasta.

Who would have thought that a pasta dish can taste so distinctly Japanese? With the Seafood Wafu Pasta, you get spaghetti noodles tossed in a soy butter glaze with scallops, shrimp and salmon. It’s a perfect blend of hearty pasta goodness and the fresh flavors of the sea.

Salmon HQ

Get a tray for Php500 (small), Php1,000 (medium) or Php1,200 (large).

The Salmon Cake.

If you ever wondered what could possibly make a show-stopping cake for any celebration, well, here’s the answer.

Salmon HQ’s Premium Salmon Cake is a wondrous creation: pieces of fresh pink salmon sashimi are layered and interlaced to form a two-tier cake, with the bottom-tier hiding layers of kani (imitation crab meat), ebiko (shrimp eggs), seaweed salad and Japanese rice.

5 reasons why you should have your date night at Sammy’s Cainta

Sure, the restrictions from the pandemic may have prevented you going out on grand dinner dates with your beloved for several months but that doesn’t mean that you have to settle for lackluster date nights, right?

Sammy’s, Cainta
Sammy’s, Cainta

Certainly not when Sammy’s provides the perfect venue for wining and dining with your special someone. Let me tell you why:

1. It’s quite a hidden gem.

There’s a reason many romantic adventures take place in some out-of-the-way locale. Physically separating you from the normal hustle-and-bustle of your daily life will help bring your focus to just you and your partner.

Sammy’s, Cainta

Sammy’s is located inside a subdivision in Cainta, but still accessible from Metro Manila, so you can easily have that quick romantic escapade with your special someone.

Martabak Manis. One of Indonesia’s most popular desserts which consist of a thick pancake made with condensed milk, crushed peanuts and sesame seeds. Salo-salo surprise from TravelEatPinas and Goodah!!!

For many of us Pinoys, food is part of our love language: in fact, kamustahans sometimes come in the form of “Kumain ka na ba?” and part of our welcome greeting to visitors is “Kain na kayo!”

For my fellow memshie Rowena of TravelEatPinas, it’s a way to touchbase with an old friend: me!

Having missed our chickahans over sumptuous spreads, she decided to send me a salo salo package from Goodah!!! that the fam and I can enjoy for our weekend lunch.

Goodah Salo Salo

Goodah Salo Salo

Just the name Goodah!!! evokes so much childhood memories. Since the 80’s, this restaurant chain has been the go-to place for people seeking fuss-free comfort food that appeals to down-home Pinoy palate such as the well-loved lugaw and silogs.

And with Pinoys spending more time at home nowadays, there are more opportunities to bond over a good meal.

Goodah Salo Salo

Goodah Salo Salo

Thanks to Goodah!!!’s Salo-Salo Meals, the fam can get together to enjoy the various ulam that everyone loves, share stories and experiences and spend time with the people who matter the most.

Goodah Salo Salo

Goodah Salo Salo

With Salo-Salo Meals at less than Php1,000 per set, memshies all over the metro can easily gather their loved ones over hearty meals that they won’t have to slave over in the kitchen.

Goodah Salo Salo

Goodah Salo Salo

My Salo-Salo Meal set for example, is made up of Pinoy classics:

Crispy Pata. This dish of deep-fried pork trotters is the centerpiece of many Pinoy hapag-kainans.

Goodah Salo Salo

Goodah Salo Salo

Beef Nilaga. “Pag may tiyaga, may nilaga.” is an adage that teaches us the value of perseverance because of the delicious rewards that await us, no doubt because the comforting nilaga is a reward in itself.

Goodah Salo Salo

Lumpiang Shanghai. Whether as ulam or finger food, you can’t go wrong with this ubiquitous dish.

Goodah Salo Salo

I’m ever so thankful that my memshie Rowena remembered me and gave my family and wonderful meal to share.

So if you’re thinking if I’m doing good now, well, yeah, I’m perfectly Goodah!!!

Rise and shine with Sinangag Express

We hear it all the time: it’s best to start our day with a hearty meal. After all, we need to have nourishment to fuel us for the day.

While some would go for breads or cereals as their starter meal, we Pinoys gravitate towards silogs.

Silogs are made with sinangag (fried rice) and itlog (fried egg) partnered with the ulam (viand) of choice. There’s something about day-old-rice that’s been sauteed with garlic and sunny-side-up fried eggs that perfectly frames the flavors of classic Pinoy breakfasts.
