With so much development going on east of Manila, residents and visitors can definitely look forward to beloved restaurant brands making their presence felt in the area.
One such brand is Pancake House which has been serving up comfort food to Pinoys – morning, noon and evening – since the 1970s.
One of its newer branches opened at the gate of Sierra Valley in Cainta, a soon-to-rise real estate development planned to contain a mall and mid-rise condominium.
This makes it an ideal stopover for motorists traversing Ortigas Avenue Extension from Antipolo and Taytay to Cainta and Pasig, and vice versa.
That’s how it was for my fam: on the way back from an errand in Tanay to the metro, we stopped by this Pancake House branch for lunch and enjoyed the restaurant’s offerings such as:
Caesar Salad (Php245). Bacon bits and croutons tossed with crisp salad greens in Caesar Salad dressing and sprinkled with grated parmesan.
Best Taco in Town (Php99). Mexican-seasoned ground beef, lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese encase in a crispy taco shell.
Classic Pan Chicken (Php230/2pc). Juicy chicken pieces are fried to a beautiful golden-brown with a satisfying crunch with every bite and accompanied by its unique savory and buttery gravy.
Classic Country Medley (Php310). A filling combo consisting of 2 pieces Classic Pancakes, 2 pieces of Country Sausage and Pineapple Juice.
House Specials Set (Php325). A sulit bundle consisting of Pancake House favorites: a Best Taco in Town, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and garlic bread and a piece of Classic Pan Chicken with its sIgnature gravy.
Golden Brown Waffle (Php199). A classic waffle cooked to a crispy and delicious golden brown.
Our Pancake House favorites like the Classic Pan Chicken, Caesar Salad and the Best Taco in Town are always a hit with the family, and we enjoyed tasting the unfamiliar dishes.
So, whether you’re a resident of a nearby village or a motorist passing by, you know you can always drop by this Pancake House outlet for a bite or two of delicious comfort food.
This Pancake House branch is located at Sierra Valley, Ortigas Avenue Extension corner Suburban Drive, Cainta, Rizal.
Considering how much my fam loves Koomi’s yogurt drinks, we have been eagerly awaiting the opening of its newest branch at SM City East Ortigas ever since we found out about it.
Koomi is an Australia-based chain which specializes in combinations of natural probiotic drinking yogurt with various fresh and wholesome ingredients to produce yummy and icy drinks that brings its signature #GuiltlessGoodness to yogurt drink lovers in the metro.
When ordering your Koomi, specify whether you want an Aussie blend (more tangy) or a Filipino blend (more milky) yogurt base. You can also choose the level of sweetness you want.
While we didn’t have the chance to visit the store, getting our drinks delivered to us was easy as can be.
We deviated from the flavors we usually order with these drinks we got via FoodPanda:
ChocNut Ka, Biscoff (Php201). I got myself and Aussie blend of this combo of natural drinking yogurt, ChocNut (the Pinoy favorite nutty candy) and Biscoff cookie butter crumbs blended with natural fruit honey.
I’m Berry Blue Without You (Php196). For hubby, an Aussie Blend from of this fruity combo of natural drinking yogurt and blueberries blended with natural fruit honey.
You’re the Berry Best (Php167). My little boy loves him some strawbs so I got him a Filipino blend this mixture of natural drinking yogurt and strawberries blended with natural fruit honey.
Koomi Be My Valentine (Php165). My daughter, in keeping with this season of hearts, opted for an Aussie blend this Valentine-themed combo of natural drinking yogurt, rose petals and strawberries blended with natural fruit honey, available only until February 16.
Waterberry Wonder (Php161). We treated our yaya to a Filipino blend of this mixture of natural drinking yogurt, watermelon and strawberries blended with natural fruit honey.

Find yourself needing a little bit of comfort lately?
How about some good ole’ comfort food, the kind that envelops you in feelings of warmth and familiarity, just like coming home?
Chances are, you won’t have to travel far to treat yourself to delicious comfort food, thanks to House of Lasagna.
Since 2009, House of Lasagna has been serving up these homey flavors, starting from the time when founder Chef Erick Congmon expanded the reach of his homemade creations beyond his family and friends by opening a hole-in-the-wall outlet in J. Abad Santos in San Juan. Today, House of Lasagna has presence in three cities in the metro and one in Lipa, Batangas.
Together with my fellow foodies, I visited House of Lasagna’s main branch along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City to sample some of its celebrated comfort food.
These included:
Truffle Mushroom Lasagna (Php350 single | Php1,240 half tray | Php2,440 whole tray). Of course, our meal included one of House of Lasagna’s namesake dishes. This rich creation is composed of al dente lasagna noodles layered with rich creamy sauce made with shiitake mushrooms and white truffle. A welcome variation of the classic lasagna most of us are familiar with!
Southern Fried Chicken Skin (Php200 single | Php380 party). One of Chef Congmon’s family recipes, this crunchy and crave-worthy appetizer consists of seasoned chicken skin, deep-fried to a delicious golden brown and served with a side of vinegar dip.
Lemon Pepper Flavored Southern Fried Chicken (Php329/6pcs | Php649/12pcs | Php999). Flavorful wing pieces that are crispy and juicy to the bite but with a bit of lemony zing that will make this dish truly memorable
Classic Margherita (Php599). One of House of Lasagna’s stone-baked pizzas, this Neapolitan pizza is made with tomatoes, mozarella cheese and fresh basil. Simple enough when it comes to ingredients but it’s big on flavor and texture thanks to its crispy edges and bottom.
Frozen Brazo Vanilla (Php750 for 8x8x2in tray | Php1,050 for 8x12x2in tray). The classic Brazo de Mercedes dessert gets a makeover, adding a graham cracker crust and a layer of vanilla ice cream to the original custard filling. A decadent treat for dessert lovers!
Ultimate Ube Halaya (Php820 for 6in round | Php1,590 for 9in round). Another homegrown dessert gets upgraded into a decadent pastry which consists of moist ube-flavored sponge cake, a filling made of real ube halaya (jam made of purple yam) and covered with white chocolate truffle frosting.

Disclosure: I attended a food-tasting held by this restaurant wherein food items were served at no cost to the attendees to facilitate honest feedback.
With all the mishaps that have been happening in the metro lately, I’ve been looking for an escape where the fam and I can just relax and enjoy being together.
As luck would have it, a Sunday errand in Tanay afforded Hubby, my son #ExhibitB and myself the opportunity to hie ourselves off to a haven I’ve long been wanting to visit: Crescent Moon Cafe in Antipolo.
Here, my boys and I were able to enjoy a leisurely brunch, with a bit of nature and art appreciation thrown in.
Lush green getaway from the busy metro
After a week of peering into the screens of our laptops and mobile devices for most of the preceding week, I’m glad that we were able to visit a green space housed in this restaurant’s grounds.
We were surrounded by verdant trees, shrubs and plants, accented by eclectic artworks and the sounds of birdsong.
Green spaces have also been shown to improve cognitive ability and social behaviors among children, so parents would be happy to note that an outdoor play area for kids will soon be available inside the premises.
Aside from the soothing sight of greenery, the sound of cascading water into the koi pond is calming to the soul. There, large and colorful carp gracefully glide through the water or break to the surface for a feeding or two. Who would have thought that this relaxing feature was borne from a World War II bomb crater?
Throughout the grounds, there are whimsical touches of nature and art, especially in the outdoor handwashing area and washroom.
Walking around Crescent Moon Cafe’s grounds is sure to bring about a feeling of peace and serenity that my boys and I need to refresh and revitalize ourselves for the week ahead.
A restaurant that houses a pottery shop
Nestled within this garden setting is a screened dining hall furnished with colorful tables and chairs and decorated with regional and ethnic accents.
In keeping with IATF guidelines, the restaurant is operating at a maximum of fifty percent of its usual capacity. All adult guests are required to present vaccination cards and sign in via StaySafe PH for contact tracing. Guests are also required to submit to a temperature check, wear facemasks inside the premises and maintain physical distance from other diners.
Off to one side is a display shop of various houseware pottery crafted by stoneware ceramic artist Lanelle Abueva-Fernando. Here, guests can opt to buy unique handmade items such as serving platters, bowls, mugs, jars and other housewares and decor.
Of course, the main draw of Crescent Moon Cafe is its food. It serves Southeast Asian cuisine made with fresh and local ingredients from the same recipes used by the founder Bey Fernando when he started the restaurant back in 1997.
These include:
Beef Rendang Rice Meal (Php340). The Malay-inspired dish made with tender beef pieces slow-cooked in coconut milk and spices, served with a cup of red rice.
Red Rice (Php50/cup). A healthier steamed rice variant rich in iron and vitamins and which makes for a great companion to various Southeast Asian dishes.
Lemongrass Pork Belly (Php420). Pork belly slow-cooked in soy lemongrass broth and served with picked vegetables.
Fragrant Peanut Chicken (Php390). Boneless chicken pieces braised in peanut sauce with a few mild spices.
Suman at Mangga (Php150). Two pieces of white suman accompanied by a slice of ripe mango, a variant of the Mango Sticky Rice in Southeast Asian cooking.
Drinks. We paired these dishes with two glasses of sweetened lemon iced tea and a glass of sweetened calamansi juice with malunggay extract.
Iced Tea (Php100)
Moringa Calamansi Juice (Php100)
With this introduction to Southeast Asian cuisine, we were able to expand #ExhibitB’s gustatory horizons beyond his usual lutong-bahay and fast-food favorites.
Spaces for al fresco dining, special events or large-scale celebrations
Crescent Moon Cafe has expanded its operations to include a new al fresco dining area called The Sunken Garden, which provides diners with an open-air space with a full view of the koi pond.
The Sunken Grden
Venue for large parties
Above it is a large hall which can accommodate a large number of people, perfect for events and large parties.
Crescent Moon Cafe also has its own watering hole and creative space called The Glass Bar where guests can get hands-on with various arts and crafts. It can also serve as a venue for seminars, workshops, meetings or private events.
The Glass Bar
Screened Cabana
A screened cabana can also serve as a venue for more intimate gatherings.

Tokyo Tokyo has long been one of the go-to restaurants of foodies looking for tasty yet affordable Japanese food.
In fact, I got my first taste of Tokyo Tokyo back when my food budget was dependent on my baon back during my college days. I’m sure my love for Japanese cuisine was spurred, in part, by my taste of Tokyo Tokyo’s tonkatsu and tempura that I bought from its kiosk during one of my college fairs.
Today, Tokyo Tokyo is the number one Japanese food chain, staying true to its mission of bringing Japan closer to Pinoys.
My family and I have come to look forward to a visit to a Tokyo Tokyo branch for a delicious Japanese meal.
Some of our favorites include:
Fried Gyoza (Php60 | 3pcs). Classic Japanese potstickers that are fried then served on a bed of fresh cabbage and drizzled with Teriyaki sauce.

Those Youtube videos on Korean egg toasts are sure working on me!
These popular egg drop sandwiches have been making their presence felt in social media, thanks in large part to their highly Instagrammable presentation, and, of course, the buzz on how tasty they are!
My daughter (who’s so into K-culture) almost despaired of never getting to taste these bread snack creations, until we found out that they’re available at a shop in nearby Eastwood City in Libis called Nineteen Degrees.
Plus, there’s no need for us to leave the house and brave the outside world just to get a taste of egg drop sandwiches as Nineteen Degrees conveniently delivers via GrabFood!
So I immediately took out my phone and got to tapping on my Grab app, and soon, my daughter and I were enjoying our egg drop sandwiches and other snackables from Nineteen Degrees, which included:
K1 Egg and Cheese (Php120). Made with buttered and toasted brioche stuffed with fluffy scrambled egg, cheese, coleslaw and Signature Sauce.
K2 Ham and Cheese (Php120). Has the same ingredients as the K1 Egg and Cheese with the tasty addition of ham slices.
P3 Crabivating Corn (Php80). A handmade scallion pancake wrapped around crabmeat, corn kernels, caramelized onion and lettuce.
Drinks. We washed down our Korean-inspired snack with refreshing 700ml drinks from Nineteen Degrees.
T4 Four Seasons Tea (Php100)
M1 Boba Milk Tea (Php120)
We’re just so glad that we no longer have to stare enviously at the TV as Youtubers get to enjoy their Korean egg drop sandwiches!
You too can get to enjoy Nineteen Degrees’ snacks and drinks by dropping by its store at Eastwood Citywalk 2, Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City, open dine in, takeout or delivery from 10am to 9pm. It also has sells its signature food through the Cloud Kitchen in Binondo, open for takeout or delivery from 11am to 9pm.

One of the happiest discoveries of the family’s Tagaytay sojourn is the presence of one of our favorite yogurt drink stores at the nearby Ayala Malls Serin.
Koomi is an Australia-based chain which specializes in combinations of natural probiotic drinking yogurt with various fresh and wholesome ingredients to produce yummy and icy drinks.
If you haven’t tried Koomi drinks yet, you definitely should mainly for two reasons:
They are so good for you. Yogurt aids in digestion, boosting immunity and is rich in nutrients that promote bone health.
They taste so good. Flavored with natural sweeteners like fruit honey and enhanced with fruits, nuts and other healthy ingredients, Koomi drinks are yummy concoctions meant to be heartily enjoyed.
I took the opportunity during a supply run in Ayala Malls Serin to take out some delicious Koomi drinks for the fam, such as:
Avo Nice Day (Php170). Yogurt flavored with rich avocado, my all-time fave!
Mango Cracker Rocker (Php155). My daughter’s go-to drink made with yogurt, mango bits and crushed graham crackers.
Cookies ‘n Cream (Php135). A treat for my son who loves the combo of yogurt and chocolate cookies.
Banana Dance with Some Berries (Php175). For my health-conscious Hubby, this combo of yogurt, bananas, blueberries and strawberries is his smoothie!
Nuts About You (Php155). I introduced Koomi to my mother-in-law with this not-too-sweet mix of yogurt, almonds and pistachios.
Boppin’ Boba (Php135). I treated my nephew (and my son’s bestie) to the yogurt version of his favorite milk tea.
I opted for the Aussie blend, resulting in drinks with a very pronounced tanginess. However, Koomi also offers a Filipino blend which has cream added to the mixture, a flavor profile more aligned to the Pinoy palate.
Tagaytay vacationers (and residents, of course!) sure have some guiltless goodness to enjoy with this Koomi branch.
It’s located at Ayala Malls Serin, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Highway Brgy. Silang Crossing East Tagaytay City, Cavite 4120.
In Metro Manila, Koomi branches are located at:
Pasig: The Podium, Unimart Capitol Commons
Mandaluyong: SM Megamall
Quezon City: Robinsons Magnolia, Eastwood City Mall, SM North EDSA, Robinsons Galleria, Z Square Mall, Ali Mall, Ayala Vertis North, SM Fairview, Timog Avenue, Mezza Residences, Fisher Mall QC, Hemady Square, White Plains, UP Town Center, Maginhawa

For a recent holiday get-together with my former office buddies, we settled on FatFook Kitchen at UP Town Center as our meet-up place.
For one thing, UP Town Center is easily accessible to all of us, scattered all over the metro as we are. Despite the Christmas rush, getting there was relatively easy, since most of the traffic are headed towards the opposite direction to the Makati and South areas.
Secondly, we know that we won’t be disappointed in the food. After all, Taiwanese cuisine is so close to what appeals to the Pinoy palate while offering a welcome break to flavors and textures we consider mundane.
The next challenge was ordering food for a group of five that will please everyone’s taste buds or sate their personal cravings. Fortunately, FatFook has a ready solution with its Feast for the Family offer which allows diners to order one appetizer, one noodle or rice dish, one vegetable dish and two main entrees for just Php1,1088.
Given our appetites and this amazingly affordable offer, we ordered two sets of Feast for the Family and indulged ourselves in a variety of Taiwanese dishes which included:
Appetizer.
Hot & Sour Soup for Sharing. A thick, savory and spicy soup which contains day lily buds, wood ear fungus, bamboo shoots, and tofu, in pork blood broth.
Fried Squid. Thinly sliced squid rings covered in batter, deep fried for the characteristic crunch and then liberally seasoned with salt and pepper.
Noodles and Rice.
Taiwan-Style Fried Noodles. Hand-pulled noodles are stir-fried with pork strips and veggies for a hearty and flavorful noodle dish.
Taiwan-Style Fried Rice. Served in a small pan, the rice is fried with a salty brown sauce and accompanied by bits of green onion and Taiwanese sausage.
Vegetable Dish.
Eggplant with Minced Pork. Slivers of eggplant stir-fried with minced pork resulting in a flavorful – yet thankfully non-spicy – viand.
String Beans. A healthy side dish of string beans stir-fried with minced pork to lessen the guilt from eating so much, hehehe!
Main Entrees.
Chicken Chops. Juicy and tender chicken breasts coated with batter and breading, then deep-fried, seasoned and sliced into -bite-sized strips.
Sweet & Sour Pork. A dish that has become a mainstay in many Pinoy dining tables, this combines sweet, savory and sour flavors.
Oyster Omelette. A dish that brings the flavors of the sea from the oysters encased with bits of lettuce in a savory egg wrap, then smothered in a sweet sauce.
Beef Tendon Hotpot. A sinful dish made with melt-in-your-mouth slices of beef tendon stewed in a thick sauce with chopped chilis for that hint of spice.
Dimsum. Our meal wouldn’t be complete with some tasty potstickers so we ordered some of the frozen dumplings which the restaurant steamed and served to us.
Pork Siomai (Php375 | 15pcs).
Shrimp Hakaw (Php430 | 12pcs).
We also couldn’t pass up the chance to have a taste of FatFook’s signature Taiwanese Sausages, plump and meaty links with a sweet, savory and garlicky flavor. Also, since FatFook does not offer service water, we washed down our meal with soda and TeaCo Black Tea.
Taiwanese Sausage (Php328).
Teaco Black Tea
Our enjoyable time together over good food was enhanced by the great service of FatFook’s staff.
I’m so looking forward to our next meet-up here.
This FatFook branch is located at 2nd Floor, Phase 1A, UP Town Center, Diliman, Quezon City, open daily for dine-in and takeout.
