Balikbayans’ re-introduction to Pinoy cuisine at Locavore Kitchen & Drinks

We Pinoys have a special relationship with our food.

For many of us, Filipino food is synonymous withe comforting home-cooked meals lovingly prepared by our nanays, or special heritage dishes passed down through generations in our family.

All of these delicious food is always best enjoyed in the company of our kin.

This is why when our tita and pinsan from the States came over, our extended family hosted a dinner for them at Locavore Kitchen & Drinks in Kapitolyo.

The restaurant was established in 2014 by a group of friends who shared a passion for food and sustainability. Since then, it has gained a loyal clientele and eventually expanded its operations to multiple locations.

Its cozy and laid-back vibe also makes it a perfect spot for our family get-together.

Locavore got its name from a restaurant concept that emphasizes the use of locally sourced ingredients in their dishes. This means that the restaurant sources their ingredients from local farmers and producers, reducing the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and supporting the local economy.

Locavore’s menu is inspired by traditional Filipino cuisine but with a modern twist, using locally sourced ingredients, including fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat.

To re-introduce our balikbayan relatives to the tasty possibilities of Filipino food, we ordered our tried-and-tested favorites:

Fried Oyster Sisig (₱450). Aklan oysters fried with chopped white onions and green chilis.

A new way to get some #IndulgingComfort: Cinnabon’s Toffee Minichocobon!

Oooh, my sweet-tooth senses are tingling!

It might have something to do with this mysterious box of goodies from Cinnabon!

Cinnabon Toffee Minichocobon

Cinnabon Toffee Minichocobon

Since 1985, Cinnabon has been making dreamy cinnamon buns: the soft and fluffy kind with sweetly spiced cinnamon tucked in between layers and topped creamy and gooey frosting.

From its hometown in Seattle, WA where father-and-son entrepreneurs Rich and Greg Komen partnered with expert baker Jerilyn Brusseau to craft the ultimate cinnamon bun, Cinnabon has been producing batch after delectable batch of this irresistible stuff.

Having made its way to the Philippines back in 1999, the brand has since established its presence in the country to include twenty Cinnabon bakeries which beckon shoppers and passersby with the irresistible fragrance of hot cinnamon buns, fresh from the oven.

Its global empire really began with the creation of the Classic Cinnabon Roll, which then made way for new and delicious variants such as the Caramel Pecanbon (the classic roll with the addition of caramel sauce and chopped pecans) and the Chocobon (the classic roll with lots of chocolatey goodness). This triumvirate of Cinnabon flavors, along with an occassional new flavor such as the recent Cranberry Biscoff Minibon, has been providing dessert lovers some #indulgingcomfort that only perfectly baked Cinnabon rolls can give.

Now, there’s something new and exciting baking at Cinnabon: the Toffee Minichocobon!

The all-time favorite chocolate-flavored cinnamon roll gets an infusion of toffee flavors, thanks to the toffee crunch bits tucked into it and sprinkled on top, plus the drizzle of yummy toffee sauce, truly a new #recipeforwonderful.

Pastries are baked foods made with a dough of flour, water and shortening (solid fats such as butter or lard). These baked creations are different from breads due to their higher fat content which give them a crumbly or flaky texture. You will find that good pastries are light, airy and fatty but their structure is firm enough to hold the weight of the filling.

Imagine my delight when I discovered that there’s a special place in the metro for dessert lovers like me: The Dessert Museum!

It features eight themed rooms focused on a particular sweet treat, each with eye-catching visual elements such as giant-sized simulations of well-known products, background info on desserts’ history printed on the walls, games that visitors can play and other bric-a-bracs that complement the theme.

In these rooms, visitors can take fun and whimsical pictures of themselves in dessert-themed fantasy environments.

The appeal of The Dessert Museum mostly lies on the sheer number of great photo opportunities it provides. Knowing this, I had my daughter, #ExhibitA, accompany me so I have someone to take those snaps “for the ‘gram.”

During our two-hour tour throughout the museum, we were given fifteen minutes per room. The flow of people were managed by tour guides in each room to ensure that it won’t get too crowded and to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. The museum also employs official photographers who can take group pictures fort he souvenir photos which you can buy for Php250 each at the gift shop at the end of your tour.

Thanks to the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, guests of all ages are now allowed. Adults (at least 18 years old) are required to be fully vaccinated while kids (below 18 years old) should be accompanied by fully vaccinated adults.

Tickets are priced at Php799 for walk-ins, tickets bought online through thedessertmuseum.com are priced at Php699. As our visit fell during my birthday month, my daughter and I were able to take advantage of the Birthday Babies Are Free Promo, wherein we just needed to pay for #ExhibitA’s entrance while I got in for free.

You may also book your tickets via Klook.

Our tickets entitled us to enter the themed rooms, as well as get four dessert samples each, which were mostly made up of small pastries and bite-sized candies. I suggest you have a meal or a snack prior to your visit as well as bring a tumbler of water so you won’t get hungry or thirsty during your tour.

The Dessert Museum is located at Units 124, 126, 127a, S Maison, Coral Way, Conrad Hotel Manila, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

Pasalubong from the “Home of the Original Cheesebread” – LA Bakeshop in Pampanga

One of the highlights of the Pampanga Food Crawl that I joined with my fellow foodies is our stop at LA Bakeshop for my first taste of its cheesebread.

Enjoy some #IndulgingComfort with Cinnabon’s Cranberry Biscoff Minibon

If you love decadent desserts as much as I do, then I’m sure Cinnabon cinnamon buns ranks highly among your go-to baked goods.

After all, what’s not to love? From their creamy and gooey frosting to the soft and fluffy buns rolled between layers of sweet cinnamon, you’d be hard-pressed to resist this kind of temptation.

Thank heavens that back in 1985, father-and-son duo Rich and Greg Komen of Seattle, together with master baker Jerilyn Brusseau, took it upon themselves to craft the most delectable cinnamon bun. Their efforts resulted in the recipe that drove the Cinnabon brand from its Seattle mall roots to global cinnamon bun domination.

Cinnabon made its way to Asia by way of the Philippines in 1999 when it opened its first bakery at Robinsons Place Manila. Today, the country has twenty Cinnabon bakeries, all committed to churning out these dreamy sweets using the finest quality ingredients and serving them, hot, irresistibly fragrant and fresh from the oven.

From the one that started it all, the Classic Cinnabon Roll, to variants such as the Caramel Pecanbon and Chocobon, Cinnabon’s mouth-watering desserts have carved their place in the local foodie scene, giving dessert lovers a dose of indulgent comfort that can only come from a decadently gooey and sticky baked good.

You can grab a sweetness-packed Cranberry Biscoff Minibon for just Php100 per piece or you can get a box of four for Php300.

Don’t hesitate to get a box or two to bring home some delicious and indulging comfort for the fam.

And don’t worry about finishing the entire box all at once. Store your buns at room temperature for up to two days and then re-heat in the microwave oven for 15-20 seconds (add 5 seconds per additional bun).
