Thai BBQ Original Restaurant, Ayala Vertis North

One of the cuisines that I have been missing since the start of the pandemic is Thai food, largely because there are not too many Thai restaurants in my neck of the woods, and a lot of them took a pause in operations during the lockdown.

I do carry some fondness for Thai BBQ Original Restaurant, though, as I was able to meet up over a tasty meal with my friend visiting from Singapore at its Glorietta Branch.

Thai BBQ
Thai BBQ, Glorietta

It’s Ayala Vertis North branch was also the setting of one of my last happy lunches with my co-workers, where we took the opportunity to have a break from our usual work and catch up over good food.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

This restaurant chain originated in Los Angeles in the late 70s, offering the best flavors of Thailand. It set up shop here in the country in 2016, aiming to reignite the Pinoy’s taste for Thai cuisine.

In recognition for its dedication to serving authentic Thai dishes, it has been awarded with THAI Select, a awarded by Department of International Trade Promotion which certifies not only the food, but also the hospitality and the atmosphere of the restaurant.

Thai food surely made for a welcome break from the normal packed lunches or fast food that I usually have when in the office.

During our pre-pandemic forays into Ayala Vertis North, my officemates and I had one of our happy lunches here where wesaid “Sawadeeka!” to some of the resto’s signature dishes.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

Tom Yum Goong.

Traditional sour and spicy soup flavored with herbs and spices with some shrimp added in.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

Pad Thai.

Rice noodles, shrimp, peanuts, a scrambled egg, and vegetables are stir-fried in a wok and tossed in Pad Thai sauce, which gives its signature tangy salty flavor with a hint of sweetness.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

Thai Original BBQ Pork Belly.

Specially marinated tender pork belly, baked and grilled in a special Thai BBQ sauce.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

Thai BBQ Spare Ribs.

Generouse cuts of falling-off-the bone tender marinated pork ribs grilled and served with sweet and spicy Thai BBQ sauce.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

Crispy Oyster Cake.

Oyster cakes battered and pan-firend then served on a hot plate with chili sauce.

Thai BBQ, Ayala Vertis North

Massaman Curry.

A fusion of Thai and Indian culinary influences which make use of red curry paste, dry whole spices and peanuts.

It’s been a while since I’ve been here and I’ve also been missing the friends I shared this delicious meal with.

The good news is that Thai BBQ Original Restaurant has reopened several branches for dine-in, takeout and delivery to sate the Thai food cravings of its Pinoy fans.

  • Makati: G/F Glorietta 4, Main Driveway (next to Ascott Hotel), Makati City (Wed to Sun | 11am to 8pm)
  • Quezon City: Level 2 Ayala Malls Vertis North (Beside Trinoma), North Avenue, Quezon City
  • Pasig: Level 1 Food Village Bldg. B Tiendesitas (beside Rico’s Lechon), Ortigas East, Pasig City

So it won’t be too long before I say “Sawadeeka!” again to awesome Thai food. Hopefully, I can say the same to the friends that I miss.

Kraver’s Kanteen brings one more reason to look forward to payday

It’s month-end once again, and y’all know what that means: payday!

On the days leading to payday – also known as hora de peligro – we painstakingly restrict our spending to stretch what remains of the last payday right to the finish line.

Well, here we are, finish line reached, so it’s now time to celebrate!

What better way to celebrate than to give in to our kravings… oops, I mean cravings!

Cloud kitchen Kraver’s Kanteen helped make the pandemic a lot more manageable for foodies in the metro by delivering mouthwatering dishes from an assortment of online food brands it partners with.

One such brand is Let’s Get Litson.

Let’s Get Litson

Let’s Get Litson
Let’s Get Litson

If, during pre-pandemic times, you are among those who make a beeline towards the roast beef station at the hotel buffet, Let’s Get Litson will surely be right up your alley.

It offers or litson baka – that’s been marinated and slow-cooked for over thirty hours to produce roast beef that’s wonderfully tender, juicy and packed with flavor.

Each fragrant slice has a smokey charred outer edge that gives way to a layer of well-marbled fat that lends a lot of flavor to the melt-in-your-mouth pinkish meat underneath.

Let’s Get Litson

It comes with its own dipping sauce made with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and chili which helps accentuate the meatiness of the roast beef and stave off umay. Personally, I like the roast beef pretty well without it but for those who love their sauces and condiments, this dipping sauce should come in handy.

I would love to turn leftover roast beef into proteins for salads or as filling for my roast beef sandwich but, alas, the fam polished our plates clean, leaving no leftovers.

If you’re still on the fence about giving in to this particular craving, here’s something that just might push you right over into ordering: for just Php899, you can get a Let’s Get Litson Payday Pack that includes an All Meat Tray, four plain rice and four beers of your choice, good for four people.

Let’s Get Litson offers both regular-flavored and spicy litson baka in the following variants:

  • Regular Rice Tray (Php289 regular flavor | Php319 spicy). Litson baka good for one to two people served on top of rice with meat drippings.
  • Family Rice Tray (Php549 regular flavor | Php599 spicy). Litson baka good for three to four people served on top of rice with meat drippings.

Sammy’s Weekend Quick Bites

Don’t you just love weekends?

It’s that time when you can wind down and recover from the hectic work days that precede it.

It’s also the time when you can treat yourself and the fam to a few indulgences.

Some of my favorite weekend memories are those I spent with my foodie friends hanging out at Sammy’s, a hidden gem of a restaurant located in Cainta.

There, we enjoyed great Indonesian-inspired dishes, along with a lovely post-meal serenade from Chef Sammy and his wife Dorothy, amidst the restaurant’s beautifully cozy interiors.

Recently, Sammy’s brought food lovers another reason to love weekends: its Weekend Quick Bites!

Sammy’s Weekend Quick Bites
Sammy’s Weekend Quick Bites

On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, Sammy’s offers yummy and highly snackable treats to sate our food cravings.

Being a mom to two budding foodies, I decided to have some of these munchies delivered to our home for the fam’s weekend merienda.

Korean Corndogs.

That sausage-on-stick that we love so well as kids got a significant upgrade, thanks to its thick coating of crunchy-on-the-outide, chewy-on-the-inside batter and further jazzed up with various fixins and condiments.

I got the Classic (Php99) for me, the Cheesedog (Php125) for my son, the Mozza (Php130) for my daughter and Overload (Php150) for Hubby.

I barely had time to take pictures of these corndogs as the fam was raring to get at them!

We weren’t able to try the Potato (Php125) but that’s what next orders are for!

Milk Teas.

Of course, we have to have something to drink together with our snacks, right?

Sammy’s has already got that covered with its refreshing milk teas that come in a variety of flavors with yummy and chewy tapioca pearls.

Japanese-style burgers and more from MOS Burger

With a burger joint practically at every street corner, the Philippines may well be a Burger Nation.

Those proliferating burger outlets, however, are mostly Western-style, largely because the burger was introduced by the Americans to the country.

One of the few bright spots of 2020 is the introduction of new, Japanese-style burgers to widen the culinary horizons of Pinoys, thanks to the opening of MOS Burgers first store in Robinsons Galleria.

MOS Burger

This outlet joined the brand’s 1,300 stores in Japan and almost 400 stores overseas. Pretty soon, new branches sprouted up such as in Megamall, Glorietta and Kapitolyo.

My daughter, who’s a serious fan of Japanese food and culture, has always wanted to eat at one of MOS Burgers’ local branches ever since the first one opened but the lockdown due to the pandemic precluded me from taking her.

Thankfully, with the recent loosening of quarantine restrictions, we were able to visit the Robinsons Galleria branch where we enjoyed some of its celebrated offerings.

MOS Cheeseburger (Php169 solo | Php269 set with iced tea and sides). I got this Japanese-style cheeseburger that comes with MOS’ special meat sauce poured over a pile of beef patty, tomato, onion, and cheese. It was well complimented by an order of Chicken Karaage (Php160).

Wagyu Burger (Php309 solo | Php409 set with iced tea and sides). My daughter ordered this Japanese-style burger made with flavorful Wagyu beef. It’s excellent when enjoyed with a side of Japanese House Salad (Php90).

I’m glad that I was able to experience MOS Burgers again as it’s been quite a while since its Grand Opening when I last had a taste of its menu items.

A few days later, the fam was able to have another MOS experience – at home, this time – thanks to a food truck making its rounds in BGC which Hubby happened to pass by on his way home.

Of course, he brought home the MOS Cheeseburger in a Family Pack (Php499/3pcs).

Underrated yet must-try Korean food from Soban K-Town Grill

Sure, Korean culture has infiltrated the Pinoy consciousness with all the K-dramas, K-idols and K-variety shows almost constantly streaming on our TV screens.

However, there’s one aspect of Korean culture that appeals to me the most: Korean food!

Despite its penchant for pungent fermented condiments and spices, Korean food is known for creating a delicious harmony of flavors.

For years now, Korean food, particularly the samgyeopsal or the Korean pork barbecue, has been capturing hearts and palates of Pinoy diners, with restaurants such as Soban K-Town Grill serving up diverse meats and side dishes such as the ones I enjoyed during a previous visit with the fam.

Banchan

However, today, I’ll be featuring some of the lesser known Korean dishes which I think also deserves some attention.

Soban K-Twon Grill
Soban K-Twon Grill

Hubby decided to order some dishes via GrabFood to go with the Korean barbecue I’m cooking at home so these delectable dishes arrived to grace our dinner table.

Gimbap (Php110/6 pcs | Php195/12 pcs). Lightly seasoned steamed rice, scrambled egg, chopped vegetables and meat rolled in gim – dried seaweed sheets – then cut up into thin slices prior to serving. Although highly snackable, it’s also a good side dish in any Korean meal.

Soban K-Twon Grill
Soban K-Twon Grill

Jeyuk Bokkeum (Php405). Thinly sliced pork pieces are marinated in spicy gochujang paste along with fresh garlic and ginger, then stir-fried along with vegetables. I like wrapping up the pork in lettuce leaves along with rice and sliced garlic and ssamjang, essentially treating this dish as another form of samgyeopsal.

Soban K-Twon Grill
Soban K-Twon Grill

Banchan Set (Php140 | free with our order). For me, much of celebrated harmony of flavors that Korean cuisine is known for is attributable to its wide array of side dishes also known as banchan. With Soban’s Banchan Set, diners can enjoy six side dishes such as kimchi, scrambled eggs and stir-fried or pickled vegetables that can be mixed and matched with other dishes.

Soban K-Twon Grill

These dishes sure added a lot of interest (and flavor!) to the fam’s dinner, and further strengthened Korean food’s position in our hearts.

Steak break at Meat Depot

If you’re a true-blue carnivore like me, a big hunk of steak would be one of your ultimate gustatory pleasures.

Just imagine: a sizeable well portioned slice of beef, rightly seasoned and then seared over on a hot grill over charcoal or a cast-iron pan to the perfect juicy and tender doneness (and no, it won’t be well-done).

All store personnel are also required to face masks and disposable gloves, while the stores and their equipment are cleaned and sanitized on an hourly basis.

Kabab delivery from Uncle Moe’s Shawarma Hub

It’s no secret that Middle Eastern food holds a certain appeal to my fam.

Even my youngest couldn’t resist beef kabab, and has been known to demolish several helpings of this dish in one sitting.

With the pandemic still raging outside the safety of our home, the family can’t go out to dine at our usual kabab haunts. Fortunately, Hubby has discovered a resto that can not only cater to our kabab cravings but can supply the side dishes we love so well.

What’s more, its Middle Eastern food offerings are quite affordable and easily accessible.

Cheers to Uncle Moe’s Shawarma Hub, now available for long distance delivery on GrabGood!

Uncle Moe’s
Uncle Moe’s

First established at Ortigas Home Depot in 2006, Uncle Moe‘s Shawarma Hub focused its offerings towards premium yet affordable Middle Eastern food.

Since then, it has branched out to fifteeb locations across the metro, serving a carefully curated menu stripped down to what its clientele keeps coming back to.

Uncle Moe’s
Uncle Moe’s

For several weeks now, Hubby would oftentimes order some kababs from Uncle Moe’s via GrabFood for his midnight snack (which he is obligated to share with whoever among us is still awake, hehehe!). The fam grew to love Uncle Moe’s offerings and we started to look forward to it more and more.

At the tail end of a particularly hectic weekend, I decided to heed Hubby’s request and ordered our faves from Uncle Moe’s Shawarma Hub for our Sunday dinner.

This included:

Hummus (Php185). A popular Middle Eastern dip, spread or dish in itself made from cooked chickpeas (garbanzos), tahini, lemon juice and garlic. It is best enjoyed with fresh pita bread.

Uncle Moe’s
Uncle Moe’s

Moutabal (Php185). A version of the baba ghanoush made with mashed broiled eggplant, olive oil, lemon juice, tahini and various seasonings. It has a yummy savory and smokey flavor which complements many Mediterranean dishes.

Uncle Moe’s
Uncle Moe’s

Ox Brain (Php195). Made with fried ox brain sprinkled with a bit of citrus juice, it adds a lot of richness to any Mediterranean dish it accompanies.

Uncle Moe’s

Beef Kabab Tray (Php510). Eight pieces of juicy beef kababs accompanied by four pieces of pita bread, garlic and red chili sauce as well as tomato-onion salsa.

Given my fam’s huge appetites and our love for kababs, it’s no wonder that we were able to finish off two orders of Beef Kabab Tray, three orders of Ox Brain, two orders of Hummus and an order of Moutabal, all in a single meal!

Send love despite the distance with Ben’s Cookies

It sometimes seems that this time of being separated from our loved ones will never end.

While we look back on the days when we can venture out of our homes to spend time with our friends and family and look forward to the days when we can do so again, the fact remains that, for the time being, our best expression of love is to protect them by keeping to a safe distance.

That doesn’t mean, however, that we can’t bridge the distance to our loved ones with some sweet thoughts and sweet gestures.

For instance, how about sending a box of Ben’s Cookies?

Ben’s Cookies Delivery
Ben’s Cookies Delivery

This cookie brand itself was borne out of a mother’s love. Cookbook writer Helge Rubinstein set up a business baking and selling cookies in a stall at UK’s Covered Court in 1983 and named it after her son. Today, it has branched out beyond the UK and even reached our shores when it opened its first store at the Podium Mall in 2019.
