During a #ReturnToOffice day when our boss (also known as #FearlessLeader) was on leave, my coworkers and I consoled ourselves by having lunch at the Mom & Tina’s branch located a short walking distance from our building.
Mom & Tina’s Bakery Cafe is a popular restaurant concept named after the mother-daughter duo who founded it a few years ago. Its branches have since become beloved destinations for those looking for delicious baked goods and hearty comfort food.
These establishments are marked by their cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and mouthwatering menu comfort food that includes breakfast items, main dishes, sandwiches, pasta dishes, salads, and cakes, pies, and other baked goods. Mom & Tina’s takes pride in its heirloom dishes, all made from scratch using fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
During our lunch time foray, we feasted on Mom & Tina’s savory viands such as:
US Roast Beef (Php645). Tender slices of beef slow-roasted to perfection, served with gravy, mixed vegetables and fluffy mashed potatoes, definitely a must-try for meat lovers.
Paella Valenciana (Php495). Mom & Tina’s take on the classic Spanish dish, featuring saffron-infused rice cooked with chicken, seafood, and vegetables sautéed in oil with garlic, tomatoes and chorizo. This hearty and flavorful dish is perfect for sharing, which is what I did with one of my officemate.
Barbecued Chicken Fillet (Php395). Juicy and succulent deboned chicken leg quarter marinated in a special barbecue sauce and grilled to perfection and served with java rice and atchara.
Barbecued Pork Belly (Php395). A Filipino favorite, Mom & Tina’s version of this dish features pork belly marinated in a sweet and savory sauce and grilled to perfection. It’s served with rice and your choice of sides.
Pasta Carbonara (Php365). A classic pasta dish that’s creamy, cheesy, and oh-so-delicious. Mom & Tina’s version features al dente spaghetti tossed in a creamy sauce with bacon and grated Parmesan cheese and served with freshly baked rolls.
Thanks to our #HappyLunch at Mom & Tina’s Bakery Cafe, we cheerfully faced the rest of our workday, even if #FearlessLeader was not with us. (Well, we made sure to share our lunch pics to make her miss us all the more, hehehehe!)

Check out my previous posts about Manila Ocean Park:
We often hear of restaurants referred to as “hidden gems,” those little-known or undiscovered dining spots that offers exceptional food, service, or ambiance that is worth discovering.
Often tucked away in some out-of-the-way location, these spots may be hard to find but but once discovered, they offer a unique and unforgettable dining experience that makes them stand out from other more well-known restaurants.
It’s no wonder then that foodies like me are always on the lookout for hidden gems; aside from the delicious and unique eats, we greatly enjoy the feeling discovering a hidden treasure that is not widely known, and we take pride in sharing our discovery with others who share our passion for great food.
One such discovery is Amah Restaurant in Taguig City.
A quarantine venture
Amah Restaurant was founded by Chef Jose Villarreal, a young culinary prodigy who parlayed his childhood interest in cuisines into a budding career as a chef. While on lockdown in 2020, he and his classmates at the prestigious Enderun Colleges set about gaining real-world experience in their field by launching their own food business headquartered in Jose’s family home in Taguig.
From researching, test cooking and initially selling food products online, Jose and his team eventually opened AMAH Restaurant, named after his maternal grandmother, situated at the roof deck of his family home in 2021. By October 2022, the restaurant gained accreditation from Enderun Colleges as an establishment where its students can undergo their on-the-job training.
Amah Restaurant is known for its heirloom Filipino-Chinese dishes with a twist such as Sisig Stuffed Chicken Wings, Smoked Char Siu Pork Belly with Bao Buns and Bibingka Cheesecake. These delicacies are prepared by the young chefs who made it a point to use local ingredients and put their own unique twists to heirloom recipes.
The restaurant also treats its patrons to a breathtaking view of the Makati and BGC cityscapes. Sunsets were definitely amazing on the upper roofdeck, making it a favorite for engagement proposals, anniversaries, and other special occasions.
A dream collaboration
Chef Jose recently led his team of fellow student-chefs for a dream collaboration with Chef Donovan Cooke from Melbourne, Australia on a two-night dinner event which featured 14 specially-curated gourmet courses from Chef Donovan’s menu. These dishes were prepared by Chef Jose and his Amah team under the supervision of Chef Donovan himself.
Chef Donovan is known for his exceptional culinary skills and his extensive experience in the fine dining industry. He has worked in some of the most prestigious restaurants around the world and gained recognition for his expertise in seafood as well as for his innovative and creative approach to cooking, which combines classic French techniques with modern Australian flavors.
“This was such an honor for Amah and a great treat for our clientele,” Chef Jose shared. “We were so excited to have had the opportunity to work in the same kitchen as Chef Donovan and to have him guide us as we prepared dishes he developed. It was definitely a major milestone for all of us at Amah. And our guests for those two nights were so lucky for the experience that was in store.”
Chef Donovan Cooke was just as excited about the dinner event. “These young chefs are very dedicated and passionate about their craft. They could have taken it easy during the pandemic, found an excuse to just lay around and rest like many of us did during the lockdowns. But they forged ahead because they’re all determined to continue learning and honing their talents. It was my privilege to be one of their mentors, to encourage them as they make their marks in the business.”
A symphony of flavors
The 14-course dinner took Amah Restaurant’s guests on an exciting flavor journey, with each dish thoughtfully designed to showcase the interplay of ingredients.
The meal startsedwith a refreshing Chilled Oyster Truffle Soup with cos lettuce, followed by the delicate balance of Mud Crab with pomelo, coriander, and ginger. The Torched Sardines with escabeche olive offered a burst of smoky and umami flavors, while the Seared Spiced Tuna with Watercress, pickled mushroom, and truffle dressing offered a combination of spice and earthy notes.

To fully appreciate the intricacies of each dish, diners were encouraged to savor each bite, to allow the flavors to linger on the palate while taking note of the unique combinations of ingredients, the textures, and the subtle nuances of flavors that Chef Jose and his team have masterfully crafted. Each dish tells a story, a culmination of culinary expertise and creativity, meant to be savored and enjoyed to the fullest.
After successfully executing a challenging 14-course menu in collaboration with Chef Donovan Cooke, it’s clear that Chef Jose Villareal and his team of student-chefs from Amah Restaurant are ready to take the local food scene by storm. This unique culinary experience allowed them to showcase their skills and creativity in the kitchen, while learning from a master chef like Donovan Cooke.
It sure is exciting to anticipate what more these enterprising young restaurateurs will be able to come up with in the future with the hidden gem Amah Restaurant as the backdrop for these culinary adventures!

Admit it: you can get cheesy too, right? Especially when it comes to Cafe Mary Grace’ signature creation: the Cheese Rolls!
Cafe Mary Grace is a renowned eatery that has become a staple in the Filipino culinary scene. It was founded by Mary Grace Dimacali, a passionate baker, and her husband, Rolly Dimacali, in 2002. What started as a small bakery in Serendra, Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City, quickly gained popularity for its delicious baked goods and warm ambiance, which led to the establishment of more branches across Metro Manila and other parts of the Philippines.
The story of Cafe Mary Grace is rooted in Mary Grace Dimacali’s love for baking and her pursuit of creating exceptional homemade treats. Her passion for baking started at a young age, and she honed her skills through years of practice and experimentation. Drawing inspiration from her travels and her family’s recipes, she developed a unique style of baking that combines classic techniques with modern flavors, resulting in the signature treats that Cafe Mary Grace is known for today.
While the cafe’s menu has expanded to include not just baked goods but also savory dishes and specialty beverages, the Cheese Rolls are arguably its claim to fame, gaining for the brand a sort of cult following among the so-called Titas of Manila. So strong is its appeal that when Fil-Am comedian JoKoy got a taste of it during his visit to the Philippines, he gave a shout out to the brand during his comedy show that he was all ready to invest in the company and bring its Cheese Rolls (and other delectable baked goods) back to the US.
And why not? Here are seven reasons why we can’t get enough of these mouthwatering treats:
Irresistible Cheesy Goodness. The Cheese Rolls at Cafe Mary Grace are a true delight for cheese lovers. Made with a rich and flavorful cheese filling enveloped in a billowy and chewy pastry, the rolls are perfectly baked to achieve a crispy, golden sugary crust on top which gives way to a soft, gooey and cheesy bite. This heavenly explosion of cheesy goodness will surely leave you craving for more.
Perfectly Balanced Flavor. What sets the Cheese Rolls from Cafe Mary Grace apart is their well-balanced flavor. The cheese used in the rolls is not overly salty or overpowering, but just right, allowing the taste of the cheese to shine through without overwhelming your palate. The subtle sweetness of the dough complements the savory cheese, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that is simply divine.
Handmade with Love. One of the reasons why we love the Cheese Rolls from Cafe Mary Grace is because they are made with care and attention to detail. The rolls are handcrafted using high-quality ingredients, and the dedication and passion of the bakers at Cafe Mary Grace shine through in each roll. The artisanal touch and homemade feel of these cheese rolls make them even more special.
Versatile Snack. Whether you’re looking for a quick breakfast, a midday snack, or a comforting treat, the Cheese Rolls from Cafe Mary Grace are perfect for any time of the day. They are incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed on their own or paired with a cup of coffee or tea for a satisfying snack that hits the spot every time.
Nostalgic Comfort Food. For many of us, the Cheese Rolls from Cafe Mary Grace evoke feelings of nostalgia and comfort. The warm, cheesy filling wrapped in a soft, doughy crust reminds us of homemade treats from our childhood or traditional comfort food that warms our hearts. Each bite is like a trip down memory lane, making these rolls even more special.
Convenient Grab-and-Go Option. Another reason why we love the Cheese Rolls from Cafe Mary Grace is their convenience. These delectable treats come in a convenient grab-and-go size, making them a perfect option for a quick bite on the run or as a takeaway snack to enjoy later. They are also great for sharing with friends and family, adding a touch of joy to any gathering.
Consistent Quality. Cafe Mary Grace is known for its commitment to quality, and the Cheese Rolls are no exception. The consistency in taste and texture of these rolls is truly remarkable, and you can expect the same level of deliciousness with every bite. This consistency in quality is one of the reasons why customers keep coming back for more.
Indulging in Cafe Mary Grace’s Cheese Rolls is a treat that can be enjoyed on various occasions. Whether you’re in need of a quick breakfast on a busy morning, a satisfying snack during your afternoon break, or a comforting treat to enjoy with loved ones, these delightful rolls are a perfect choice. You can savor them while sitting at one of Cafe Mary Grace’s cozy cafes, paired with a cup of their specialty coffee or tea, and take in the warm ambiance of the cafe.
If you’re on the go, you can also grab a box of Cheese Rolls as a convenient takeaway snack for a road trip or a picnic. Their grab-and-go size makes them perfect for satisfying cravings during a hike or a day at the beach. Additionally, the Cheese Rolls from Cafe Mary Grace are a great option to share with friends and family during gatherings, potlucks, or special occasions, adding a touch of cheesy goodness to any celebration.
So, whether you’re starting your day with a cheesy breakfast, taking a midday snack break, enjoying a cozy moment at the cafe, grabbing a quick bite on the go, or sharing them with loved ones, Cafe Mary Grace’s Cheese Rolls are a delicious treat that can be savored in a variety of settings, making them a beloved favorite among foodies and cheese enthusiasts alike.

In May of last year, my family and I were shaken up by an announcement that one of our go-to restaurants – Comida China de Manila – located along C5 in Pasig, was closing after twenty-six years of operations.
Comida China de Manila was established in 1996 along E. Rodriguez Avenue (C5 Road), serving Old Chinatown cuisine – dishes that harken back to the Cantonese panciterias that proliferated in Manila during the pre- and post-war years. It has gained renown and a loyal clientele for its homey atmosphere and its delicious classic Chinoy dishes.
We were quite saddened with the news as the restaurant had long been the setting of many memorable family meals and celebrations. It was a shame, we thought, that the pandemic precluded us from having a last meal at this landmark eatery prior to its closing.
Back in business
Well, let’s fast-forward to March 2023 when, during a grocery run at S&R along Libis, we caught sight of a familiar signage at the ground floor of the building. Oh yes, Comida China is back in a brand new location!
It took us a while to be able to eat here as we usually espy a line of diners waiting outside the restaurant whenever we passed by. However, one Sunday morning, just after attending Mass, the family was able to grab a table as the restaurant has just opened for the day.
Now under new management, the restaurant boasts of a more modern layout, though in a much smaller area, with a capacity of 50 dine-in seats (which, if memory serves me right, was about a fourth of the seating capacity of the previous location), with no areas allotted for special functions or private parties unlike the old location.
This new restaurant’s interiors also have a lighter and airier feel, thanks to the natural light streaming in from floor -to-ceiling glass windows that look out to the Libis road. Its decor still calls back to the days of Old Chinatown, thanks to tasteful wall art and shiny hardwood furniture.
Old faves are back, albeit in smaller portions
As we browsed through the menu, we were delighted to see that our old favorites are still there – the same dishes created and curated by Comida China’s celebrated cook who began his career in the original T. Pinpin Street branch in Manila.
However, due to the smaller kitchen size, the servings were also smaller, in sizes good for two people (so goodbye, bandehados!). Still, this suits my fam just fine as we could then order multiple viands to try out more flavors, such as:
Ho To Tay Soup (Php394). This savory soup is made with a rich broth that is simmered with pork, liver and shrimp. It is then garnished with vegetables and served hot, making it the perfect comfort food.
Yang Chow Fried Rice (Php330). This classic Chinese fried rice dish is a staple at any Chinese meal for the fam. The dish is made with day-old white rice that is stir-fried with eggs, vegetables, and meat, such as shrimp, pork, or chicken. The result is a flavorful and filling dish that goes well with other Chinese viands.
Spicy Salt & Pepper Spare Ribs (Php579). These crispy and flavorful spare ribs are coated in a spicy salt and pepper mixture, deep-fried until crispy then topped with chilis and served with a side of sweet and sour dipping sauce.
Comida China Chicken (Php379). This signature dish is made with marinated bone-in chicken deep-fried until crispy then tossed in a sweet and savory red glaze.
Camaron Rebosado (Php457). This classic Filipino dish is made with large shrimp that were battered and deep-fried until crispy then served with a side of sweet and sour sauce.
The first of many
While the fam didn’t get to have our last meal at the old Comida China de Manila restaurant before it closed its doors, we were able to have our first meal at its newest one, and, thanks to its convenient location, excellent service and, of course, delicious dishes, it would definitely be the first of many.
Plus, I’ve heard from some sources that if this branch does well, there are plans to open more branches. So how about we extend some love and support to this newly opened Comida China de Manila?
As this branch is currently on soft opening, only payments via cash and credit card are accepted.
Table reservations for early lunch and dinner for groups of maximum of ten to fifteen persons are accepted during weekdays. Seating during weekends are on a first-come, first-served basis.
Comida China de Manila is located at Unit 4&5 S&R Membership Shopping, E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue corner Calle Industria, Bagumbayan, Quezon City, open for dine-in and takeout Mondays to Saturdays from 11am to 9pm, and Sundays from 10am to 9pm. For inquiries, contact +63 2 82819867 or +63 917 1100951.
