An immersive coffee experience at Starbucks Reserve Roastery, Seattle

Seattle, WA is the birthplace of Starbucks. My love affair with this coffee brand is well-known among my nears-and-dears (and well-documented on this blog, too!)

Well, on my second visit to the Evergreen State, this time with my family in tow, I made sure to drop by the mecca for coffee lovers right here in Seattle: the Starbucks Reserve Roastery.

Located just nine blocks from Starbucks’ original store near the Pike Place Market, it is one of the largest Starbucks outlets in the world, occupying 15,000 square feet of space, all dedicated to the company’s pursuit of coffee innovations.

Here, visitors can look forward to a unique and immersive combination of coffee experiences, such as witnessing the on-site brewing of rare Starbucks Reserve coffees, tasting an ever-evolving beverage menu, watching, tasting and learning eight distinct coffee preparation methods, perusing an expansive library of coffee-related tomes, and chatting with a staff of Certified Starbucks Coffee Masters who simply love talking about their craft.

The experience starts in the Main Bar where you can order your cup of choice or allow the Coffee Masters to recommend a perfect handcrafted drink for you, made with the store’s freshly roasted, rare coffee beans.

Here, the kids and I enjoyed 12oz glasses of Cold Brew Malt, a treat from my bro. This drink is a thick malted milkshake made with Starbucks’ cold brew coffee spindle-blended with Mora’s vanilla ice cream and chocolate bitters.

Bro-in-law, on the other hand, a Matcha Teavana Tea Latte, one of the store’s non-coffee drinks.

Next, at the Scooping Bar, a Coffee Master can advise you on which Starbucks Reserve coffee best suits your taste and you can take home a freshly scooped bag.

At the Handpicked at the Roastery, your inner Starbucks fan can truly come out and play. With a plethora of carefully curated merchandise from Starbucks’ artisan partners, from coffee-brewing equipment from all over the world, coffeeware ranging from quaint-kitschy to posh and wearables that proudly announce your love for coffee, you can take a piece of Starbucks home with you.

At the Mixology Bar, get a shot or two of signature cocktails and spirit-free drinks inspired by Starbucks Reserve coffee and Teavana teas. I’ll probably return here – sans the little one – for a more spirited coffee experience.

Starbucks partnered with Rocco Princi to bring a taste of the Spirito di Milano to its customers. At Princi, you can treat yourself to artisan breads, freshly baked pastries and pizzas, as well as delectable desserts which are best enjoyed with your cup of Starbucks Reserve coffee.

Want to get lost in your own coffee story? Head on to the Experience Bar where you can go on themed coffee tasting flights, guided tours by Starbucks’ Coffee Masters where exploratory brew methods and immersive storytelling will only deepen your love for your favorite brews.

For a bookworm like me, the Coffee Library is a destination in itself. Climb up the steps so you can pore over 200-plus books dedicated to coffee. It also offers a great view of the entire roasting operation.

A trip to the Starbucks Reserve Roastery is always a worthwhile activity for coffee lovers who find themselves in Seattle. I plan to return before my trip ends to have a more leisurely journey across the bars and stations.

Breakfast Takeout at 85C Bakery Cafe, Lynnwood

Yesterday, the second day of our family in the Evergreen State, my brother took us to his favorite pastry shop, 85C Bakery Cafe.

85C got its name from its belief that coffee holds its flavor best at a steady temperature of 85 degrees Celsius. Its name is a statement of the cafe’s commitment to serving handcrafted coffee of the highest quality.

Each 85C store has its own in-shop bakery with a wide variety of pastries baked fresh every hour.

These pastries were the reason for our visit yesterday afternoon: the plan was to buy some of the store’s freshly baked goods for our breakfast the next day. Our loot included:

Milk Toast (USD3.00). A loaf with a fresh and natural milk taste.

Taro Puff Pastry (USD2.50). This puff pastry is light, flaky, and layered with delicious taro filling inside.

Milk Pudding (USD2.00). A traditional Japanese style soft bread with vanilla custard inside.

Garlic Cheese (USD2.00). A soft textured bread topped with our signature garlic spread, mozzarella cheese, and sprinkled with fresh parsley.

Cheese Dog (USD2.20). Soft bread wrapped around a hot dog, with cheddar & mozzarella cheese. Baked with ketchup, light mayo, black pepper and dry parsley.

Marble Taro (USD3.00). A sweet bread made with mixed grains and filled with signature taro filling.

This morning, I had the Milk Pudding and Taro Puff Pastry for my meal while I was enjoying the crisp morning air.

Tasting sweet dreams at Le Reve Patisserie, Ugong

Darling, if you ever feel the stress of city living bringing you down, why don’t you take a break and treat yourself to a bit of the sweet life?

How?

Head off to this lovely dessert shop hidden at the Ortigas Technopoint block along Julia Vargas Avenue. Called Le Reve (“The Dream” in French), it offers savory dishes and sweet desserts that combine the elegance and sophistication of French culinary techniques with homegrown flavors.

Owner Angeli Nasser started baking as a hobby but eventually pursued it as a craft and a passion. Now a certified Paris-trained chef, she applies the precise and exacting preparation styles of French cuisine to bring out the wonderful tastes and textures of local ingredients.

This marriage of French cuisine with Filipino ingredients is brought to sweet life for myself and my foodie friends from #SaanSaPH through these delectable dishes:

Longganisa Capellini (Php220). A sauce made with bits of longganisa (sausages) from Laoag, Ilocos adds a lot of savory flavors and a bit of spice to the thin-strand capellini pasta.

Le Reve Patisserie, Ugong

French Apple Crumble (Crumble aux Pommes – Php730 for 8 inches | Php150 for 4 inches | Php180 ala mode). Delicate apple slices sweetened with coco sugar and cinnamon spice topped with a crisp and buttery streusel crust. I will come back here just to taste this again ala mode. 🙂

Le Reve Patisserie, Ugong

70% Chocolate Lava Cake (Mi-cuit aux Chocolat – Php110 for 4 inches | Php140 ala mode). A molten chocolate cake prepared mi-cuit (“half-cooked” in French). Rich chocolate made from single-origin beans supplied by our very own Cacao de Davao is prepared souffle-style, making the resulting cake feel light and creamy but still rich with chocolate goodness.

Le Reve Patisserie, Ugong

Calamansi Tart (Tart au Calamansi – Php125 for 4 inches). A bright and tangy taste of summer in a dessert. A delicate but creamy citrus-flavored custard set on a thin layer of graham cracker crust will have you reaching out for more.

Le Reve Patisserie, Ugong

Dalandan Madeleines (Madeleines aux Dalandan – Php32 per piece | Php380 for 12 pieces in a tin can). Cute, little shell-shaped sponge cakes flavored with dalandan rinds, you can enjoy it with your coffee at the store or bring a can home to enjoy at your leisure.

https://flic.kr/p/2eiDazH

Cafe Americano (Php100). Freshly ground and brewed coffee made with Sagada French Roast, great on its own but also a perfect companion to Le Reve’s desserts.

Le Reve Patisserie, Ugong

Le Reve Patisserie brings a bit of the pleasures of Paris here in Pasig. Hang out for a bit to bask in patisserie’s elegant surroundings for a leisurely coffee break, or some photo opps (because, who’s judging?) 🙂

One Saturday afternoon, I visited this cafe together with my foodie friends from #SaanSaPH to check it out.

While the cafe’s interiors are designed for comfort, it still has a lot of personality. Artworks by local artist @mayanneaise adorn the walls, depicting iconic local scenes such as a tribal woman from Benguet holding a cup of the region’s famous coffee and a relaxing tropical beach landscape. There’s a child-proofed play area under the stairs where the little ones can amuse themselves while the adults take a break and dine with ease.

Holiday brunch get-together at Bluesmith Coffee & Kitchen, Greenbelt

There are some friendships that endure despite great distances and changes in circumstances. Such is my friendship with Fetina, formerly an officemate who has since spread her wings working in Singapore. She usually comes home to the Philippines to visit family two to three times a year, and when she does, we make it a point to meet up at a restaurant in either Greenbelt or Glorietta.

In our latest meetup after Christmas, we opted for Bluesmith Coffee & Kitchen located in Greenbelt. An offshoot of Equatorial Coffee in Katipunan, QC, Bluesmith combines homey yet Instagrammable interiors with comfort food and its sound foundation in coffee, making it an great venue for weekend brunches, friendly get-togethers and, dare I say it, #TitaConferences. (Hahaha!)

Our get-together repast consisted of:

Flat White (Php150). This coffee beverage is characterized by the thin layer of microfoam (hence the term “flat” in “flat white) as opposed to the thicker foam layer in traditional cappuccino. I sipped on this while waiting for Fetina to arrive.

Bluesmith Coffee & Kitchen, Greenbelt

Fresh Lemonade Soda (Php150).  Freshly squeezed lemon juice made into a sweet fizzy drink.

Bluesmith Coffee & Kitchen, Greenbelt

Tenderloin Beef Salpicao (Php420).  One of Bluesmith’s bestsellers, this dish consists of cubes of beef tenderloin, cooked to medium doneness, and marbled potatoes sauteed in Worcestershire oil and toasted garlic and served mixed vegetables and rice.  I found the beef tender and flavorful but the sauce a bit too sweet for my taste.

Bluesmith Coffee & Kitchen, Greenbelt

Creamy Pasta Tartufo (Php360).  Another of the resto’s bestselling dishes, this pasta dish is characterized by the earthy aroma of black truffle, mixed with a creamy mushroom sauce and served with baguette chips.

The servings were quite large such that we had trouble finishing the two dishes.

And since I unlocked my Zomato Gold privilege, we got the Creamy Pasta Tartufo for free!

Some friendships are nurtured by constant presence and attention but some, like Fetina’s and mine, are maintained by occasional meetups over good food and long conversations.

Haven for coffee and comfort food lovers: Little Owl Cafe, New Manila

Hidden away in New Manila is a haven for lovers of coffee and comfort food.

Renovated from one of the previously worn-down houses along Broadway Avenue, Little Owl Cafe is nestled among lush greenery. Started as a coffee shop but now a full service cafe, it serves food that features a fusion of Italian and Asian cuisines that professionals working in the area or families residing nearby can enjoy.

I was recently invited to a Blogger’s Dinner at this restaurant where I was able to sample some of its delectable offerings:

Omelette Chorizo Rice (Php270). Part of the resto’s All-Day Breakfast Menu, it consists of homemade longganisa rice, delicately wrapped in a thin omelette and topped with onion gravy and aioli.

Sisig Tacos (Php210). Three pieces of soft-shell tacos topped with crispy sisig and a savory liver aioli sauce. A great start to the meal!

Glazed Cauliflower (Php210). Cauliflower covered in a sweet and spicy soy glaze then deep-fried to crispiness. A great way to get the kids to eat their veggies!

Truffle Mushroom Pasta (Php350). Al dente noodles tossed in a rich homemade mushroom sauce made with three different kinds of mushrooms – shiitake, enoki and shimeji – topped with fried enoki and drizzled with truffle oil.

Shrimp & Aligue Pasta (Php330). Pasta noodles tossed in a creamy tomato sauce incorporating shrimp aligue and served with plump grilled shrimps.

Beef Tapa & Cheese Sandwich (Php295). A Pinoy take on the Philly Cheesesteak which showcases savory slivers of beef tapa, it is accompanied by a hefty serving of crisp shoestring fries.

Chicken & Waffle (Php270). Chicken thighs covered in batter then fried to a crisp then served with sriracha coleslaw over cheddar waffles.

Lechon Kawali Bibimbap (Php320). The classic sweet-spicy Korean fried rice served with sauteed mushrooms and spinach accompanied by deep fried pork belly and fried egg. A great combination of Pinoy and Korean flavors!

Chicken Satay (Php280). A bowl of Indonesian- inspired fried rice served with grilled chicken thigh and its trademark peanut sauce.

Beef Rendang (Php420). Tenderchuck slow-cooked in aromatic spices and coconut cream. A little too spicy for me but a sure winner for those who like their food with lots of kick!

Kimchi Salmon Sinigang (Php420). Salmon belly and loin seared then served in a spicy and sour soup.

Iced Mocha (Php170). A rich yet refreshing blend of chocolate and coffee flavors, it is among the Toby’s Estate beverages served in this restaurant.

https://flic.kr/p/QyJGPJ

Pink Owl (Php180). A fruity cocktail of vodka, lychee, watermelon and mint. A suitable drink to chase away the workday stress.

Little Owl Cafe’s food offerings provide its diners with an adventurous break from the everyday meals but with enough familiar flavors to make them appealing to those with more conservative tastebuds.

Its premises are well-appointed, tastefully furnished and prettily lit, great backgrounds for foodie shots and group photos.

Since this resto is conveniently located a short distance from my workplace, I definitely can drop by again for dinner with friends after office hours.

Little Owl Cafe is located at 65 Broadway Avenue, New Manila, Quezon City, open Mondays to Saturdays from 11am to 10pm and Sundays from 8am to 9pm. For inquiries, call + 63 917 8181468 or +63 2 5012036.

Another food truck specializing in Japanese cuisine is Katsu Sora. Tried the new Caramel Cinnamon Cookie Frap at Starbucks, Tomas Morato

On a night when I needed to let off some steam, I hied over to the Starbucks outlet at the Imperial Place Suite building along the Tomas Morato Extension, some walking distance from my workplace.

Armed with the 12 Beverage stars on my mobile phone’s Starbucks App which entitles me to a free handcrafted beverage, I set about looking for my drink for the night.

I decided on one of Stabucks’ new flavors – the Caramel Cinnamon Cookie Frappuccino. It is a rich conconction of espresso enhanced by a decadent caramel sauce and spicy hints of cinnamon, topped with frothy whipped cream and sprinkled with lightly spiced cookie crumbs.

And since I couldn’t resist, I asked the barista to add some coffee jelly into the drink.

The drink is a like a taste of the much-anticipated holiday season in my mouth – a cold beverage combined with a sweet dessert treat that warms my tummy and my heart, helping me set aside my frustrations of the day.

Starbucks’ Caramel Cinnamon Cookie flavor is also available in hot and iced formats.

A Matcha Treat at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Tomas Morato

The last among The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s limited-edition matcha line that I tried is the Matcha Affogato.

CBTL, SM East Ortigas

On one of my lunchbreaks, I headed on to the CBTL branch in nearby M Place along Mother Ignacia Avenue to try it out.  This branch offers coffee and tea addicts like me a place where they can relax and just hang out while getting our caffeine fix.  Its open concept layout and floor-to-ceiling glass windows give the place a bright and airy feel that provides an interesting contrast to the vibe provided by dark wood furniture and  colorful accents.

CBTL, Mother Ignacia

CBTL, Mother Ignacia

Did you know that CBTL invented Ice Blended drinks over 20 years ago?  In 1987, an employee brought a blender to the Westwood, LA store and mixed together ice, coffee extract and chocolate powder.  This paved the way for countless coffee lovers to enjoy their favorite drink cold.

This new addition to CBTL’s Ice Blended drinks, the Matcha Affogato (price starts at Php185), basically brings a caffeine, dessert and matcha fix in one delicious concoction. With the addition of frothy cream and a shot of espresso to its Matcha Green Tea Ice Blended drink, CBTL serves up an energy boost from the caffeine and the sugar rush.  The icy drink also provides a welcome refreshment during the hot midday.

While my favorite among the three new drinks in the matcha line is the Matcha Raspberry Latte, the Matcha Affogato Ice Blended still is a welcome addition to the arsenal of icy drinks that I can beat the heat with.

Product Review: BrewsCo Single-Use Drip Coffee

Sometimes, when you feel the need for a pick-me-up as you’re starting your day, your sleepy mind does not want to deal with having to clean and operate the coffee machine just to get your morning cuppa.

Fortunately, BrewsCo Single-Use Drip Coffee takes away all the hassle involved in preparing your morning caffeine fix. It allows you to enjoy a drip-brewed coffee with no need for any special equipment.  All you require are a sachet of BrewsCo , your trusty coffee mug and hot water.

To prepare your own “brewed coffee in a jiffy,” simply tear off the top (along the dotted lines) of the drip bag then place its ear-hangers onto the rim of your coffee mug. Afterwards, using slow circular motions, pour hot water (91 to 97 deg C) into the drip bag until almost full.   Continue to pour hot water until you reach 150 to 180ml (around 5 to 6 ounces).

I was able to enjoy my BrewsCo Donya blend which is made of 100% Arabica beans medium-roasted  to have a smooth feel with a hint of citrus and vanilla.  I got it for free at the BrewsCo booth at HIScon 2018. I like its premium taste and aroma which I enjoyed leisurely at my workstation.
