Pizza delivery from Papa John’s, Riverside

It’s been three weeks since the enhanced community quarantine came down and I’ve just got to say: thank the powers-that-be for food delivery services!

My son #ExhibitB is an avid pizza lover and he’s been hankering for his favorite food for some time now.

Wanting to give him a treat for not driving me crazy while we’re all stuck at home, I scanned the FoodPanda app for some options, and lo, and behold! There’s a Papa John’s branch in the next subdivision that offers pizzas for delivery.

Papa John’s, Riverside

Gifted with a FoodPanda discount voucher which gave me Php100 off my order, I was able to get a 12-inch family-size Simply Cheese Pizza (Php519 + 10% delivery fee) for just Php470.90.

Got noods from Aling Banang’s, Santa Lucia

Pancit – aka noodles – are so firmly ingrained in Filipino cuisine that they qualify as Pinoy food.

Introduced by Chinese settlers, pancit – derived from Hokkien term pian i sit which translates to “convenient food” – has been widely adopted throughout the country, with many provinces boasting of their unique spin on the dish.

Well, one of my favorite pancit variants is the pancit canton, the Pinoy version of the chow mein.

Made with stir-fried meat and vegetables tossed with thick wheat noodles, the pancit canton is a beautiful fusion of colors, flavors and texture, a true symbol of bounty which is why this dish graces most, if not all, Pinoy celebrations.

Well, after tiring of the usual lutong bahay options while stuck at home during the enhanced community quarantine, I was lucky to find that a store near my house offers this dish.

And so twenty minutes after I called the store, I braved the heat of early summer to pick up my order of Pancit Canton (Php400 good for five persons) from Aling Banang’s. Apparently, I’m not alone in my quest as I encountered food delivery riders waiting for their orders as well.

And what a platter of wonder my pancit canton was! Veggies, noodles and sauce plus a generous topping of crunchy bagnet slices mixed in. What’s not to love?

Aling Banang’s, Santa Lucia

It was more than enough to satisfy my hungry fam. (There was no time to do a pretty plating of the pancit for the ‘gram because we just wolfed it down, really!)

And guess what! An order good for 15 people is just Php750. I guess I know where I’ll order my birthday noodles!

Stuck at home during the ECQ? No need to leave the safety and comfort of your abode to enjoy Aling Banang’s hearty dishes. You can simply have your meal delivered through GrabFood or LalaFood.

Friends & Family Express, The Podium

“Kain tayo!”

It seems that for any Pinoy having a meal ot a snack, the experience won’t be complete without someone to share it with.

Well, Pinoy meals are best enjoyed with friends and family.

That’s probably the concept behind the newly opened stall in Podium Mall and its mother restaurant in BGC, both named Friends & Family.

Its food offerings harken back to old-timey faves and twists on classic Filipino recipes that kith and kin can all come together to enjoy.

One evening after work, I got together with my college girl daughter #ExhibitA for a bout of shopping and dinner at The Podium Mall.

Friends & Family, Podium

Since I was gifted with a Raintree Restaurants GC last Christmas, we decided to use it at the Friends & Family Express stall at The Corner Market Food Hall.

There, we were able to some of F&F’s signature dishes such as:

Mr. Jones US Beef Garlic Tapa (Php195). Tender beef tapa served on a sizzling plate with fried egg, pares rice and sinigang soup.

Friends & Family, Podium

Beef Pares (Php275). Braised beef stew also served on a sizzling plate with a soft-boiled egg, pares rice and sinigang soup.

Friends & Family, Podium

Ube Champorado (Php175). A large bowl of champorado flavored with purple yam instead of tablea chocolate served with a piece of dilis for a bit of salty contrast to the sweet porridge.

Friends & Family, Podium

Foodies seeking for cool and exciting twists to everyday Pinoy food will find their cravings satisfied at Friends & Family.

Friends & Family, Podium

Thanks to Marj for the GC.

Friends & Family Express is located at The Corner Market Food Hall, Second Floor, The Podium Mall, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City.

The flagship store of Friends and Family is located at Bonifacio High Street Central, 7th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

During the enhanced community quarantine, F&F’s BGC branch offers curbside pickup and delivers through its hotline +63 917 8917053 or via GrabFood and FoodPanda.

Healthy snackin’ with The Sandwich Guy

It’s been two weeks into the enhanced community quarantine, and some of us might be feeling confined within the four walls of our abode.

My first instinct was to stock up on chips and chocolates – yes, my kind of comfort food – but I do realize that there are healthier alternatives.

Some of those alternatives may be found at the nearest branch of The Sandwich Guy, the go-to destination of health-conscious folks – or those like me who should be a little more health-conscious, hehehe!

I recently got to snack on two of its tasty yet healthy offerings that prove the adage “Everything is better with bacon.”

The Sandwich Guy, Pioneer

Check them out:

Bacon & Egg Sandwich (Php72 Junior | Php115 Whole). Creamy egg spread punctuated by crunchy toasted bits of bacon accompanied by lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers in two slices of toasted bread.

Keto Bacon Bits (P150). A protein-filled package of bacon bits, cheese, egg, tofu cubes, lettuce, tomato and cucumbers to build up on energy and strength, but not necessarily the pounds.

Chicken inasal meal at home from Mang Inasal, Libis

To me, grilled food is a taste of the outdoors.

Roasted chicken, or letson manok, is a welcome break from the braised, stewed, boiled or fried fare that the family and I usually have at home.

Chicken inasal, the version of roasted chicken from the Visayas, offered a delicious variance from our usual family meal. It is made by marinating the chicken in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, coconut vinegar and annatto then roasted over hot coals.

Well, as a treat for the fam (and a way for me to avoid cooking), I decided to order from Mang Inasal via GrabFood for our dinner. Thirty minutes after placing my order, my fam’s meal arrived, ready for eating.

Mang Inasal, Libis

Our meal included several orders of:

Pecho (Chicken Breast and Wing) Solo (Php125 each).

Mang Inasal, Libis

Paa (Chicken Thigh and Leg) Solo (Php109 each).

Pork Barbecue (Php39 per stick).

These chicken inasal solo meals are served with a cup of steamed rice and are best enjoyed with chicken oil (used to baste the chicken pieces) and a dipping sauce of calamansi, soy sauce and siling labuyo.

Classic Pork BBQ Ribs at RACKS,Tiendesitas

Certified carnivores like Hubby, my daughter #ExhibitA and myself have a special affinity for RACKS.

This resto chain’s name stands for Real American Country Kitchen Style, so you can expect Southern-style hearty servings and rich flavors from down-home recipes, and what they claim to be “The Best Ribs in town.”

It is no wonder, then, that the fam would want to spend lunchtime at the newly opened branch of RACKS at Tiendesitas, which is nearest to our home.

Racks, Tiendesitas
Racks, Tiendesitas

There, we shared a meal comprised of:

The Onion Brick (Php295). Thinly sliced, marinated and lightly-breaded onion rings deep-fried to a crisp into a brick shape then served with a spicy remoulade and barbecue sauce. This particular iteration of the dish was a bit too oily, though, compared to the other times we had this dish.

Racks, Tiendesitas

Classic Pork Ribs (Php455 quarter rack | Php685 half rack |Php1,315 full rack). Slow-cooked to tender and smokey perfection, these meaty cuts of pork ribs never fail to appeal to us. We originally planned on getting just one half rack but we felt a bit bitin so we ended up ordering another half rack. I guess we were quite ravenous that day!

Racks, Tiendesitas
Racks, Tiendesitas

I prefer to eat my RACKS Classic Pork Ribs with Garlic Rice and Coleslaw while Hubby and Exhibit A prefer their ribs with Java Rice and Mac & Cheese.

Of course, these ribs are best enjoyed with RACKS’ Original Barbecue Sauce!

Racks, Tiendesitas

Another filling and hearty family meal done!

Racks, Tiendesitas

This Racks branch is located at Ground Floor, Building B, Frontera Verde, Ugong, Pasig City.

Craving for RACKS’ Classic Pork Ribs but stuck at home due to the enhanced community quarantine? You’d be happy to know that you can enjoy it at home by having RACKS’ frozen meats delivered from either its Tiendesitas branch or Paseo de Magallanes branch. Available meats include: Baby Ribs (Php1,733 for two full slabs), Classic Pork Ribs (Php1,381 for full rack), Premium Boneless Pork Ribs (Php1,403 for full rack) and Beef Ribs (Php1,485 for full rack). RACKS’ Original BBQ Sauce and Extra Hot BBQ Sauce are also available Php325 per bottle.

These are available for pick-up via walk-in (just call ahead of time to avoid long queues: +63 2 82341604 for Tiendesitas or +63 2 88215797 for Paseo de Magallanes) or for delivery via GrabFood or Food Panda.

Sarap-to-the-Bones Fried Chicken at Max’s, Tomas Morato

While I consider myself adventurous when it comes to food, I get a hankering for familiar and comfortable flavors every once in a while.

That’s why I dragged my officemates to a branch of Max’s Restaurant near our office for lunch. Aside from offering no-frills but exceedingly flavorful fried chicken, this branch also has sprawling grounds with some green spaces, which provided our eyes with a welcome break from our computer and gadget screens.

Max’s, Tomas Morato

Max’s, Tomas Morato
Max’s, Tomas Morato

Max’s Restaurant had its start in 1945 when Stanford-educated teacher Maximo Gimenez befriended the American GIs stationed in Quezon City and invited them to his home for a drink or two. These visits led to their patronage of the cafe Maximo decided to build, with his sister, Ruby, developing a special recipe for tender, juicy and crispy fried chicken that won the hearts of both the Americans and Pinoys.

During that lunch break, Max’s is where my officemates and I were able to enjoy fuss-free yet tasty fried chicken (best enjoyed with Max’s Banana Ketchup!) and other Pinoy classics such as:

Chopsuey (Php249). The Pinoy’s go-to vegetable dish made with pork and shrimp bits sauteed together with fresh vegetables and chicken liver.

Max’s, Tomas Morato

Half-Regular Chicken (Php216). The keto choice for the dieter in the group (spoiler: it wasn’t me!).

Fuss-free Chinoy dinner at home, thanks to North Park Noodles, Cainta

This year’s Valentine’s Day dinner at home was easy and fuss-free, thanks to a nearby branch of North Park Noodles.

That Friday came at the end of a very busy work week and I was in no mood to worry about elaborate food preparation.

Well, technology came to the rescue. At that time, North Park Noodles offered a special Sama-Sama Bundle – a combination of dishes good for sharing available at a discount – to orders made through GrabFood.

For the past twenty-five years, North Park has been serving freshly cooked Chinoy comfort food – Pinoy takes on popular Chinese dishes – to its clientele.

For only Php888 (+Php45 delivery fee), the fam and I were able to feast on some of its best-sellers which included:

Yang Chow Fried Rice. A mainstay in many Chinese meals, this fried rice is made with white rice, char siu barbecued pork, shrimp, green peas, green onion, and eggs, which all come together to make for a filling rice dish.

North Park, Cainta

Sweet and Sour Pork. Made with marinated pork pieces lightly covered in cornstarch, deep-fried to a golden brown then doused with a sweet-sour sauce.

North Park, Cainta

Shanghai Rolls. The lumpiang shanghai we all know and love, served in bite-size pieces with a sweet chili sauce.

North Park, Cainta

China Chicken. A half-serving of the simple Chinese-style fried chicken with crispy skin and tender meat.

North Park, Cainta

All of these dishes – though Chinese in origin – feature familiar flavors that that we grew up with.

North Park, Cainta

The fam’s Valentine’s Day dinner at home may be lacking in polish and pizzazz, but it allowed me to spend more time talking and bonding with the people I love.

Wangfu Hainanese Chicken Rice Set (Php298). One of Singapore’s all-time favorite dishes, this dish combines flavorful poached chicken with rice seasoned by the chicken’s fatty poaching stock and served with cucumber garnishing and three sauces: minced ginger in oil, chili paste and dark soy sauce.

I found that the Salted Egg Chicken also goes well with the chicken rice.

I also miss Wangfu’s Nanyang Milk Tea (+ Php48 to any order of Singaporean Hawker Rice Toppings), which is, unfortunately, not among the offerings available in the pick-up/delivery menu. Given that summer is here already, I would love it to be served cold to counter the spiciness in these Asian dishes. I’d definitely get myself another glass on my next visit after the community quarantine.

With such a yummy and hearty repast ready for delivery, staying ar home won’t be so bad now, would it?

Stay safe and I’ll see you on the other side, fellow foodies!
