Inang Charing’s Cakes and Pastries now offers Strawberry Shortcake

Is it strawberry season in the Philippines already?

Way, waaaay back into my youth, I only got to taste this luscious red fruit when a family member brought home a precious basket as a pasalubong from a Baguio trip.

Due to its scarcity, eating the fruit fresh was considered sosyal… or shala, as the kids say it nowadays.

Thanks to developments in agriculture and transportation, strawberries are more widely available, making it easier for bakers and dessert makers to incorporate this delectable fruit in their creations.

Such is the case with Inang Charing Cakes and Pastries (read my previous post on this enterprising homebaker here), recently launching its newest offering: the Strawberry Shortcake.

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Mhai Capili, the baker behind Inang Charing’s Cakes and Pastries, decided to add this dessert to the menu, taking advantage of the fresh Baguio strawberries being sold in the metro. She decided to test out the recipe forming in her head to see if it will work.

The result is a delightful eight-inch diameter confection made with a light spongy cake layered with thick whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

It is a delight to the senses: The spots of bright red made by the fruit against the light-colored cream and sponge cake draw the eyes. The smell of the fresh strawberries whet the appetite. The contrasts in textures in these elements make for an exciting mouthfeel. And, of course, the bursts of fruity sweetness against the sugary cream filling and cake sates any sweet tooth’s craving.

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

The best part is that this absolute showstopper of a dessert can be yours for just Php985!

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Just order via Facebook or Instagram with a three-day lead time and pay via GCash or BPI bank deposit a day before your preferred pickup date.

Thank goodness there’s no need for me to break the bank, nor travel far, for that shala (or sosyal) feeling you get from eating a decadent slice of Strawberry Shortcake.

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Inang Charing’s Strawberry Shortcake

Disclosure: I got my cake for just Php785 as I chanced upon Inang Charing’s post regarding the sale price for one of its first-ever batch of Strawberry Shortcakes while I was browsing for dessert ideas for my daughter #ExhibitA’s birthday. You could probably say that I just couldn’t resist. Oh, #ExhibitA (and the whole fam) loved it too. 😋

Leave the cooking up to ALPHA’s Kitchen Home Delivery

Sure, momshies, we might have just a wee bit more free time nowadays. It’s been three-and-a-half months since our lives were upended by the pandemic and many of us found ourselves stuck at home. Some even discovered a talent for cooking as I have, cooking up a storm for the fam’s meals.

But cooking up a storm for every meal can be tiring, right?

I sometimes wish that I can leave the whole menu planning and food preparation to someone else.

Fortunately, I can have the folks over at ALPHA’s Kitchen Home Delivery take care of all of that for me.

Alpha’s Kitchen Home Delivery

The dish on this new entrant in the local food business is that it began as the home service massage company ALPHA Massage & Wellness Therapy.

Curious on what delicious delights they came up with? Well, here’s a sampling:

Treat yourself to some sweet happiness from Casa Bakes by Kayla

Let’s admit it: we can all use a bit of happiness right now. If the past few months has taught us anything, it’s to grasp at every bit of simple happiness we can to help us keep our sanity during these crazy times.

Well, how about the kind of happiness that comes in this box?

Casa Bakes by Kayla

Casa Bakes by Kayla

Twenty-eight-year-old bank employee Kayla Torres used to be too busy to do much at home prior to the lockdown. When the community quarantine was put in place all over the metro, she found her days a bit gloomy. To cheer herself up, she took up her old hobby of baking cookies.

“Baking and eating cookies brighten up my day,” she shares.

After trying out cookies from other internet shops (chewy ones are her fave), she decided to make her own version. When she started posting about her creations on social media, they drew the attention of friends and family who want to buy those sweet delights.

And so began Casa Bakes.

Kayla’s new passion project currently offers the giant chewy cookies she so loves – the kind that’s monster-sized and packed with all sorts of good stuff that will fill your mouth with sweetness and your heart with joy. These are:

Chocolate Chip (Php215/box of 3 | Php400/box of 6 | Php575/box of 9). There’s a reason this cookie variant is always top of mind among many cookie lovers. From its sweet buttery smell, the burst of rich chocolate sweetness from the chocolate chips to the feel of the moist and gooey center that contrasts with the slight crisp at the the bottom and sides, this cookie deserves its place among the classic faves.

Step into fairyland with this treat from Graffiti Desserts

It was originally thought that the Black Forest Cake (or Gateau, if we are to judge by the complexity of this confection) got its name from the Schwarzwald (“Black Forest” in German). It is a densely forested mountain range in Southwest Germany which was said to have inspired the Grimm brothers to write the tale Hansel and Gretel.

The Schwarzwald is known for its rain-blessed, lush and verdant forests, attracting tourists from all over the world who want to experience that fairytale setting.

Well, imagine ending a meal with that fantasy tableau right on your dessert plate.

Graffiti Desserts

New online store Graffiti Desserts recently introduced its signature offering: the Black Forest Floor. This unique creation deconstructs and reimagines the classic Black Forest Gateau as the Shwarzwald’s lush forest floor.

Graffiti Desserts

In each cup of this ingeniously crafted dessert are elements of the Black Forest we know and love, but with a few tweaks.

Graffiti Desserts

Moist chocolate cake, cherries marinated in amaretto and a layer of cocoa and crushed peanuts make up the “soil” which surrounds a “mud pool” of salted milk chocolate ganache. Nestled amidst candy twigs and pebbles, dried rose petals and a green tea butter crumble which serves as a “moss” covering is a gold tinted dark chocolate cream dome “egg.”

Graffiti Desserts

You could say this dessert might just be too pretty to eat but what a loss that would be to your other senses.

Graffiti Desserts Black Forest Floor

From the exotic blend of fruity and rich chocolate scents to the interesting variations in texture inside your mouth, to the explosions of salty-sweet, chocolatey, fruity and candy flavors on your tongue, every spoonful is like digging into the forest floor for buried treasure.

Graffiti Desserts

Graffiti Desserts is the brainchild of Rain, a twenty-six-year-old entrepreneur who partnered with classically trained baker to bring about unusual desserts. This new entrant into the busy metro food scene seeks to differentiate itself from other dessert shops by “taking inspiration from every direction, rethinking sweets and changing the dessert landscape in the process.”

Well, I’m already a fan.

Graffiti Desserts

I’m also excited about the next product it will launch. I heard it will be similar to the Black Forest Floor – introducing a new spin to an old classic and inspired by nature.

In the meantime, dessert lovers out there can get your hands on your own little pots of Black Forest Floor by sending Graffiti Desserts a message through Facebook or Instagram, indicating your number of orders, name, contact number and delivery address. Online banking payments via BPI, BDO and Metrobank are accepted.

Pampanga’s favorite cheesebread, now in the metro!

Pampanga is famous for its cheese bread and rightly so!

Ever since I had my first taste of this tasty pastry during a trip to Pampanga a few years ago, I have been craving for it. Each piece has a lovely mix of milky, sweet and salty flavors from the soft and fluffy bread to the fragrant sugary cheese streusel topping. When served still warm  from the oven, it gives off a an appetizing cheese-y smell which will beckon you to bite into it again… and again… and again.

LBS Bakeshop

Hindi mo pagsasawaan, as we Tagalogs say.

For a while I thought I will only get to taste this delicacy when passing through Pampanga on the way to Bataan during our family’s yearly Holy Week trip to my dad’s hometown, or when I’m lucky enough to have friends passing through the area buy a box (or two!) for me.

Well, imagine my delight when the heavens listened to my pleas and has now made this Pampanga favorite available in the metro!

LBS Bakeshop

LBS Bakeshop

LBS Bakeshop, formerly known as Apung Gari Bakery & Kiosk, is where Pampangenos go for a taste of the original cheese bread since it started operations in 1955. After taking on the name LBS Bakeshop (after Leonila B. Santiago, the former “L” in another Pampanga landmark, LA Bakeshop) in 2008, it has continued to make flavorful merienda dishes from Apung Gari’s original recipes such as palabok, arroz caldo, chicken mami and more available to locals.

And now, thankfully, it has also made two of its most popular products – its cheese bread and its soft and sweetly buttery Spanish bread – available to Metro Manila denizens through weekly deliveries to its main reseller in Quezon City.

For Php299, you can get a box containing:

  • 30 pieces of cheesebread
  • 25 pieces of Spanish bread, or
  • a mix of 20 pieces of cheesebread and 10 pieces of Spanish bread

I chose the last option as my son and I are crazy for cheese bread while Hubby and my daughter prefer Spanish bread. Since receiving my order, I re-heat two pieces of cheese bread to go with my coffee for breakfast every morning, and then re-heat enough pieces of the two breads for all of us for our afternoon merienda.

  • your order
  • full name
  • complete delivery address
  • mobile number
  • preferred mode of payment (BPI or GCash)

After receiving confirmation of your payment, you can book the pick up of your order through your preferred courier service.

Now that Pampanga’s famous cheese bread is here, I foresee a lot of happy breakfasts and snack times for me and the fam.

So why don’t you support a local business and order a box for your family and friends today?

New ube flavors from What’s Your Flan?

Just when you thought you couldn’t possibly find a new way to enjoy ube, here comes What’s Your Flan? with two ube flavors to tickle your palate.

Ube, or purple yam, has been a trending food item since early last year, expanding its use from the halayang ube and ube ice cream we grew up with, to new confections and concoctions including ube cakes, ube pandesal, ube donuts and even ube frappes.

Today, I was able to taste two new custard-based desserts flavored by this versatile veggie from What’s Your Flan?

What’s Your Flan?

What’s Your Flan?

The brainchild of former OFW Princess Rosario, What’s Your Flan started out in 2009 as a home-based business centered on creating leche flan “with a twist.” Today, the company can boast of a myriad flavors of leche flan – including green tea matcha, strawberry with cashew, and more – as well as an expanded lineup of products including ice cream cakes and cheesecakes. (Recently, I was able to check out its Avocado Dalgona Gelato. More on that here.)

This time, What’s Your Flan? took the classic ube and applied it to two delectable flans desserts.

Ube Pandan (Php380). One of the company’s Premium Flantasy Cakes, it combines the flavor of ube and the appetizing aroma of pandan. Surprisingly, Hubby, though not a dessert-lover like me, excitedly dug into this flan as soon as I finished taking pictures. Apparently, it reminded him of the ube bars he enjoyed so much as a kid. (Creating a mental note for Father’s Day, hmm…)

What’s Your Flan?

What’s Your Flan?

Ube Peruvian Inspired Flan (Php450). Similar to us Pinoys, the people of Peru also have a love affair with sweets which start with their version of the leche flan: the Crema Volteada. This Latin dessert is given some twists through a special process that gives it a smooth and creamy mouthfeel as well as the subtle addition of the ube flavor to its rich milky taste. My daughter #ExhibitA, who is not an avid ube fan, loved how the ube in this dessert is not overpowering.

What’s Your Flan?

What’s Your Flan?

These flans are best enjoyed chilled, and consumed within five to seven days. (Well, they didn’t last a day in our household.)

With these ube-flavored flan creations, it sure looks like our collective obsession with ube won’t be going away anytime soon!

What’s Your Flan?

To get your hands on these ube flan confections and more, send a message to What’s Your Flan on Facebook or Instagram or call +63 916 497 8876.

Interested in starting your own business? What’s Your Flan is accepting applications for resellers and franchisees.

Have a box of good cheer with MDJ Cookies

It’s been three-and-a-half months since our seemingly well-ordered life has been upended by the community quarantine and I won’t be surprised if we don’t find ourselves a little out of sorts with the world every once in a while.

You know what comforts me when the doldrums come?

A little bit (or a lot!) of something sweet – like a cookie! – can get me right back into a cheerier mood. It’s not just about the rush of sugar in bloodstream. It’s more about the comfort and warmth that emanates from a piece of well-made cookie.

Ready-to-eat dishes from San Miguel Foods and Petron Treats

Momshies, does working from home still leave you with little time to prepare and cook your family’s meals?

Worry no more, because San Miguel Foods has a line of pre-cooked dishes that are sure to be showstoppers at the dinner table.

With these ready-to-eat dishes, you won’t have to stress yourself out in the kitchen: all you have to do is heat, serve and enjoy!

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

I was able to serve some of these to my fam for lunch. Check them out:

Cook Express Chicken Karaage (Php424 for 1 kilo). Karaage is a Japanese cooking technique in which food items – mostly chicken – are marinated and lightly coated in flour prior to frying in light oil. After I’ve heated the chicken karaage in my oven, I found it close to restaurant quality, especially when accompanied with Japanese mayonnaise.

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

Cook Express Lechon Paksiw (Php495 for 1 kilo). I usually encounter lechon paksiw the day after big celebrations like fiestas or Noche Buena because this is the Pinoy mom’s answer to “”What happens to all those lechon leftovers?” (at least those not carried away by the Tupperware-toting guests, hehehe!). The leftover lechon is simmered in vinegar and the liver-based lechon sauce resulting in a dish with fork-tender roasted pork meat in sweet-sour-savory sauce that’s good for another family mealtime.

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

Cook Express Beef Kare Kare (Php693 for 1 kilo). I have great appreciation for kare-kare every time it is served to me at the dinner table because I know how much effort went into making it. My mom used to grind peanuts herself, meticulously clean and boil the animal parts prior to cooking up a great tasting peanut-y beef stew. This one has the same tender meat and peanut sauce I love and is enjoyed best with bagoong. Add in some veggies string beans, eggplant slices and pechay and it’s almost like the kare-kare that my mommy used to make.

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

Chef’s Selection Fresh Corned Beef (Php655 for 900 grams). Corned beef is called that because in the process of salt-curing the meat, it is treated with large grains (or “corns”) of salt. Today, it is one of my favorite breakfast food when served with fried rice and a sunny side up egg. This corned beef version differs from the canned iteration because the beef comes in chunks, not flakes. Still, it can be sliced up thinly to be sauteed with garlic and onions, or added to beef broth and veggies for a fresh take on nilaga.

San Miguel Foods x Petron Treats

So momshies, there’s no need to sweat it out in the kitchen. Just order these ready-to-eat dishes and more from San Miguel Foods through this website and schedule pick up at your nearest Petron Treats store.
