Bored & Hungry opens second branch at Public Eatery, Robinsons Magnolia

Bored & Hungry, a burger haven originating from the vibrant streets of Long Beach, California, has embarked on an exciting journey, blending a unique cryptocurrency theme with a passion for great burgers. With roots grounded in innovation and a flair for flavors, this burger joint has found a new home at Public Eatery in Robinsons Magnolia, delighting the taste buds of the metro’s burger enthusiasts.

Origin Story

Bored & Hungry isn’t just another burger joint—it’s a fusion of cryptocurrency enthusiasm and a love for great food. Restaurateur Andy Nguyen, the visionary behind this venture, conceptualized the restaurant’s theme around non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from the renowned Bored Ape Yacht Club. A testament to creativity and contemporary culture, one of these NFTs even became the official logo of the establishment.

Originally starting as a ninety-day pop-up in Long Beach, the response was overwhelming, attracting over 1,500 customers. This success encouraged Nguyen to transform the pop-up into a permanent establishment, offering a succinct menu of irresistible smash burgers, veggie burgers, crispy French fries, and refreshing soda. The innovation doesn’t stop at the menu; Bored & Hungry even accepts cryptocurrency alongside traditional payments, embracing the future of financial transactions.

Arrival on Philippine Shores

The crypto-currency burger phenomenon quickly crossed oceans to reach Philippine shores, initially setting up pop-up stores at prestigious locations like the Marriott Grand Ballroom and Powerplant Mall’s The Grid Food Market. Thanks to the collaboration between The Tasteless Food Group and Hungry Dao, this exciting concept found its permanent residence at The Grid Food Market, marking its inaugural Asian branch on March 10, 2023.

This gastronomic adventure didn’t stop there. Recently, Bored & Hungry expanded its horizons, adding a second branch at Public Eatery, a sophisticated dining hall within Robinson’s Magnolia. This move further solidifies Bored & Hungry’s commitment to bringing an enticing and novel burger experience to the metro’s denizens.

New Home at Public Eatery

Public Eatery, the home of Bored & Hungry’s second branch, is an upscale dining haven in Robinson’s Magnolia that redefines the concept of a foodcourt. Drawing inspiration from subway lines, it pulsates with energy and movement, creating a modern and stylish ambiance. The spacious, open dining area, provides an inviting setting for gastronomic exploration.

What sets Public Eatery apart is its commitment to diversity in dining. Imagine an express lane towards a world of flavors and cuisines within one convenient location. It’s the place where the metro’s food enthusiasts converge to experience an array of tastes.

Burger Indulgence

Here, we can enjoy Bored & Hungry’s tasty offerings such as the Bored OG Burger (Php395) and the Pinoy OG Burger (Php445).

America’s BEST BURGER of 2022 now available at The Grid Food Market

Burgers have a nearly universal appeal.

The way that ground beef patties grilled to juicy and delicious perfection, other fixins and sauces thrown in to add new dimensions of flavor, and the fluffy buns to encase all those yummy elements come together into that appetizing burger are sure to get many of us salivating.

Well, there’s a new name in burgers within the local foodie scene, and that’s Bored & Hungry.

Bored and Hungry
Bored and Hungry

The burger shop based in Long Beach, California is built around a cryptocurrency theme. Restaurateur Andy Nguyen bought three non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of which became the store’s official logo.

Initially opened as a ninety-day pop-up in Long Beach, its launch attracted over 1,500 customers, prompting Nguyen to make the restaurant permanent, offering a streamlined menu of smash burgers, veggie burgers, French fries and soda while accepting payments in US dollars and cryptocurrency.

Well, it soon made its way to Philippine shores, opening limited-time popup stores at the Marriott Grand Ballroom and at Powerplant Mall’s The Grid Food Market.

The good news is that the Tasteless Food Group and Hungry Dao brought it back and is giving it a permanent outpost at The Grid Food Market starting March 10, 2023, making this Bored and Hungry’s first Asian branch.

You know what that means: the metro’s foodies now have more opportunities to feast on the burger joint’s much-lauded Bored OG Burger.

Made with two all-beef patties smashed thin and grilled until crispy around the edges along with caramelized onions, slices of American cheese and house-made burger sauce encased in butter-toasted brioche buns, the Bored OG Burger is an experience not to be missed; it has even been cited by Good Morning America as America’s Best Burger of 2022.

At Php395 ala carte, it’s now priced Php200 cheaper than at previous popups, thanks to the group being able to source local suppliers for the burger’s ingredients.

I just love the rich beefiness of this juicy burger, along with its the deliciously crispy edges that explode with flavor with every bite.

Burger fans who want to complete their burger meal may opt for a Bored OG Burger Combo which already includes the burger, fries and drink for Php595.

Meat these blends at 8 Cuts Burger Blends, Mega Fashion Hall

Are you certified carnivores like me and my family?

We just can’t seem to resist the sight, sound, feel and flavor of juicy, freshly grilled meat, especially if it comes in the form of hefty burgers.

There’s little wonder then that 8 Cuts Burger Blends remains as one of our go-to burger places.

8 Cuts Burger Blends, Mega Fashion Hall
8 Cuts Burger Blends, Mega Fashion Hall

The store got its name from the eight types of beef cuts which are blended to produce varied but perfectly flavorful and juicy burger patties that make up the different burger options that the store carries.

Each beef burger patty is at least a quarter pound, topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato and onions, then drizzled with the corresponding sauces and sandwiched between fluffy buns.

Aside from burgers, the restaurant also offers appetizers, sides, desserts and drinks to complete a burger meal.

Before a family movie date as SM Cinema, the fam stopped over for dinner at 8 Cuts Burger Blends in Mega Fashion Hall where we enjoyed:

Golden Cheddar Mozza Nuggets (Php220 solo | Php395 sharing). Large pieces of gooey mozzarella and cheddar encased in crunchy breading. Really, how could anyone go wrong with this much cheese?

8 Cuts Burger Blends, Mega Fashion Hall

Bucket of Onion Rings (Php235). Onion rings battered, deep-fried and seasoned until crispy and flavorful. Being such big fans of onion rings, we consider this bucket quite a steal!

Cheeseburger (Php250 for 1/4lb | Php320 for 1/3lb). Grilled quarter-pounder beef patty on lettuce, tomato and onions and topped with house cheddar and Sauce No. 3. This upgrade to the regular fastfood cheeseburger is a sure hit with my son..

Bleu 2.0 (Php325 for 1/4lb | Php390 for 1/3lb). House-blend patty drizzled with Bleu Cheese Sauce and topped with Bleu Cheese crumble, caramelized onions, peppered onion tanglers and crisp green lettuce. This continental twist to the burger is the one that appealed to my daughter.

Four Cheese 2.0 (Php325 for 1/4lb | Php390 for 1/3lb). Burger patty topped with parmesan-crusted mozzarella, sharp yellow cheddar, Monterey Jack, Garlic Aioli, Fried Basil, and Sauce No. 3. Again, I say: how could anyone go wrong with this much cheese?

Tasty burgers for lunch at 8cuts Burgers

Every once in a while, you just want to let your inner carnivore out and indulge yourself with some tasty and protein-packed meal, right?

Well, that’s what Hubby and I did last Easter Sunday, not that we were heavily abstaining from meat during Lent.

However, when our original plan for lunch didn’t push through while were out on an errand in Makati, we espied a small branch of 8cuts Burger Blends along Leviste Street, and we knew we just couldn’t pass it up.

It had been years since we last had a meal at an 8cuts Burger Blends outlet, so we gamely entered this joint with a decidedly pub-like feel.

8cuts Burger Blends got its name from the eight different cuts of beef that are blended together into patties, then grilled to smokey and juicy perfection before being assembled into mouthwatering burger creations.

Needless to say, Hubby and I were quite excited to dig in to our burger meal which consisted of:

Onion Rings Bucket (Php215). Onion rings battered, deep-fried and seasoned until crispy and flavorful.

8cuts Leviste Makati

The Cheeseburger (Php230 for 1/4-pounder). Grilled quarter-pounder beef patty on lettuce, tomato and onions and topped with house cheddar and Sauce No. 3.

Sodas (Php85 each). What’s a burger meal without some sodas?

8cuts Leviste Makati

Eating these burgers is not a neat affair. Being so meaty, juicy and packed with toppings, you can bet that there are some messes to be made. Plus, I also accidentally knocked over Hubby’s drink, which the staff helpfully cleaned up as they transferred us to another table to finish our lunch.

The place was cozy yet comfy and our quick meal here was a perfect side-quest during our errand-filled Saturday.

I don’t usually visit the Makati business district, but I’m glad that Hubby and I were able to revisit one of our old favorites here.

Sumptuous snacking at Silverspoon, Tomas Morato

Did you welcome the loosening of quarantine restrictions and the prospect of being able to dine out?

I know I did!

Aside from the assurance that the pandemic is steadily easing its hold on the metro, the added freedom to wander about has allowed me and my friends to meet up for a sumptuous snack at one of my new favorite haunts: Silverspoon.

A cozy and hidden spot in a busy food haven

This little cafe tucked away in a quiet side street near the busy food hotspot Tomas Morato Avenue is the brainchild of young entrepreneur Decie Montefrio, who transitioned her thriving food delivery business during the pandemic into a lovely brick-and-mortar restaurant that serves a combination of Filipino and intercontinental dishes.

Here and there: Shake Shack

Oh yes, burger joints do abound all over the world and diners have their choice of where to get their burger fix.

The challenge, really, is for the burger establishment to have something extra going for it that will drive people to seek it out, try its offerings and (hopefully!) come back for more.

While it started out as a roadside food stall (that didn’t even sell burgers!) in Manhattan, Shake Shack has evolved into a burger eatery with a fine dining mentality, where high quality versions of the usual burger joint offerings are served up in a more upscale setting.

During a family trip to the US nearly three years ago, we decided to have our lunch at ShakeShack’s outlet along Hollywood Boulevard.

It seemed to be a popular joint as we had to line up for a few minutes before getting to the counter.

Shake Shack
Shake Shack
Shake Shack
Shake Shack

We tried an assortment of burgers such as the ShackBurger (ShakeShack’s famous cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce), the Shroom Burger (crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melter muenster and cheddar cheese topped with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce), and the SmokeShack (cheeseburger with Applewood smoked bacon, chopped cherry pepper and ShakeSauce) which we all found to be very tasty and filling enough to fuel us for the rest of our sightseeing that day.

Of course our order wouldn’t have been complete without ShakeShacks crinkle-cut fries and shakes.

Shake Shack
Shake Shack
Shake Shack
Shake Shack

It was among the foodie experiences that we had in the States that we wish could be replicated back home in the Philippines.

And wouldn’t you know it: by the time we got back to Manila, Shake Shack was already here!

It opened its first store in Bonifacio Global City in May 2019, a second branch in SM Mega Fashion Hall in December of the same year, a third one in Greenbelt Makati in October 2020, and finally, a fourth outlet in Alabang Town Center in July 2021.

Well, life got in the way so we haven’t been able to visit any of these local outlets from the time we got back, until Hubby and I went on an errand run in SM Megamall recently.

There, we espied Shake Shack’s sprawling premises while we were walking around, and decided to have lunch right then and there.

Shake Shack
Shake Shack

While I decided to go for a ShackBurger, Hubby went for a Chick’n Shack (crispy-fried chicken breast with lettuce, pickles and buttermilk herb mayo).

To complete our meal, we also got some crinkle-cut fries and softdrinks.

Shake Shack
Shake Shack

Because of COVID restrictions, there were not a lot of people in the place (only fully vaccinated people can dine in) and just a fraction of the store’s capacity is allowed to be used.

Now that the restrictions are loosening, I hope I can bring the kids over soon so we can relive one of our fun-filled adventures.

Shake Shack’s outlets are located in the following areas:

  • Central Square, Bonifacio Global City (open daily from 10am to 9pm | Tel +63 2 82553240)
  • Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall (open daily from 10am to 9pm | Tel +63 2 83664059)
  • Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center Makati (open daily from 10am to 9pm | Tel +63 2 79336824)
  • Corte de las Palmas, Alabang Town Center (open daily from 10am to 8pm)

Shake Shack also delivers via GrabFood and FoodPanda.

Chef Edmond Dannug brings back-to-basics comfort food via Heavenly Spiced

You would think that after honing his craft through stints at upscale hotel restaurant Amber in Hong Kong and as head chef of Enderun Events in Davao, Chef Edmond Dannug will bring his considerable skills to bear in whipping up complex French dishes when he decided to go into business.

But no.

Instead, he opted to offer comfort food – his personal favorites, actually – through the online store that he co-manages with his fiancee Jasmine Guillarte. They named it Heavenly Spiced.

Heavenly Spiced

“My cooking mentors always taught me that the best food are the simplest,” he shares.

Still, the dishes on offer at Heavenly Spiced are no run-of-the-mill viands. Their flavors have been enhanced through careful preparation and cooking techniques ingrained into culinary professionals, such as Chef Edmond. They come in large party trays that can serve six to eight people and are perfect for small gatherings or for a special family meal that you don’t want to slave over in the kitchen.

He started out with the Hainanese Chicken and Rice (Php850), widely considered as one of Singapore’s national dishes. Based on the Wenchang Chicken, a well-known dish in South China dating back to Qin Dynasty, this dish is painstakingly made by poaching a whole chicken in sub-boiling temperature, with some of the resulting stock combined with ginger, garlic and other flavorings to cook the flavorful rice that will accompany the dish. Chef Edmond completes this platter with bright green bokchoy and the three traditional dipping sauces for Hainanese Chicken: a red chili sauce, a thick and dark soy sauce, and a paste of freshly ground ginger.

Another of the chef’s comfort food faves is the Bourbon Glazed Barbecue Pork Ribs (Php1,400). Meat lovers would love to get a hold of this dish! Slow-smoked, falling-off-the-bone meat flavored with a sweet-savory bourbon glaze and partnered with umami corn cobs made for a finger-licking dish! It’s messy eating but there’s really no better way to enjoy it.

Chef Edmond recently expanded his menu to include Chicken Wings (Php900). Inspired by his favorite chicken chicken place Frankie’s, this dish is made with large pieces of chicken wings which are deep-fried then coated with a vinegar-based cayenne pepper glaze. They are then served with bleu cheese dipping sauce which made for a well-balanced combination of sweet, spicy and tangy flavors.

The chef’s newest creation which also joins Heavenly Spiced offerings is the Angus Burger (Php1500). Six hefty quarter-pound patties made with ground Angus beef are lightly seasoned and then grilled to medium doneness to bring out their beefy goodness. These are then placed in grilled brioche buns along with lettuce, tomato, battered onion rings and cheddar cheese then coated with the chef’s Bourbon Barbecue Glaze and served with a side of umami fries.
