Rabbitgirl’s Dairy Bread, Tomas Morato

Feeling hungry while working at home?

Sate your hunger with cheesy sandwiches from Rabbitgirl’s Dairy Bread!

What makes this sandwich kiosk different from other sandwich stations is its use of sourdough bread.

Considered one of the healthiest breads, sourdough bread is contains more nutrients that are usually degraded by fermentation process and is also prebiotic, making it more easily digestible than other breads.

Rabbitgirl’s Dairy Bread, Tomas Morato

During the enhanced community quarantine, Rabbitgirl’s Dairy Bread makes two of its best-selling cheese sandwiches available for pickup and delivery:

The Cheeseperience (Php90). This is Rabbitgirl’s take on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring rich, melted mozzarella and cheddar cheeses in a buttery sourdough toast, with a drizzle of maple honey, and served with a shot of tomato bisque.

Rabbitgirl Dairy Bread, Tomas Morato

Maple Bacon Melt (Php115). Baked bacon rashes marinated in a maple balsamic reduction, sandwiched between toasted sourdough slices and cheddar cheese, and served with a drizzle of maple honey and a shot of tomato bisque.

Rabbitgirl Dairy Bread, Tomas Morato

If you’re wondering what that tomato bisque, it is soup made with stewed fresh tomatoes, basil and carrots which serves as a tangy counterbalance to the resto’s savory sandwiches.

Of course, these sandwiches are best enjoyed when still hot and toasty, so here’s how to reheat them:

  • Sandwiches: place in the microwave oven for ten to fifteen seconds or for one to two minutes in a toaster oven.
  • Tomato Bisque: while still in its reusable cup, place in a container with a little bit of hot water and into the microwave oven for 15 seconds

Dessert drinks from Black Scoop, Tomas Morato

I admit: I do have a sweet tooth.

This is why I’m always on the lookout for ways to sate my craving for sweets.

Then one day, while I was running errands near my office, I came across this cafe along Tomas Morato called Black Scoop Cafe.

Founded on love for coffee, tea and ice cream, Black Scoop Cafe combines the choicest ingredients, technology and know-how to come up with fresh takes on drinks and desserts.

It’s no wonder, then, that I found myself returning to this cafe to get my sugar fix with:

Brown Sugar Latte (Php140 medium | Php150 large) with Cream Cheese. Chewy boba pearls cooked in brown sugar syrup that also lines the cup of this milky drink topped with a layer of frothy cream cheese.

Hershey’s Cream Cheese (Php140 medium | Php155 large). A chocolatey concoction made even more decadent by the cream cheese topping.

Fine Italian food at Amici, SM North

Who would have thought that an Italian missionary would establish a tasty culinary tradition in the Philippines?

Well that’s exactly what happened when Salesian Father Gianluigi Colombo decided to open a canteen (then called Amici di Don Bosco or “Friends of Don Bosco”) to cater to the workers of Don Bosco’s printing press.

Its initially simple menu of coffee and gelato which later expanded to include wood-fire oven baked pizzas and homemade pastas. Amici later became known for serving tasty and authentic Italian food prepared by priests grew and developed its own loyal following.

Today, Amici has 9 branches in Metro Manila, one of which is in SM City North EDSA where my fellow foodies and I headed for dinner after attending a few events.

There, we shared a meal which included:

Truffle Mushroom Dip (Php385). Truffle, porcini, shiitake and button mushrooms mixed together with caramelized onions in a rich creamy sauce. Dip the crisp pieces of pizza crust served with it and you’ll find yourself addicted to this.

Amici, SM North EDSA

Pesto Prosciutto (Php400). A hearty dish of penne pasta covered in creamy pesto sauce and topped with fried prosciutto.

Linguine al Prosciutto e Tartufo (Php380). Al dente linguine pasta tossed in a sauce of proscuitto, truffle oil, porcini and shiitake mushrooms.

Get your bowl of happiness at Hanamaruken

I wasn’t always a ramen lover.

Once upon a time, I wouldn’t be able to differentiate among ramen varieties, nor appreciate the artistry that goes into crafting and delicious bowl of ramen.

That changed when I first tasted Hanamaruken’s Happiness Ramen three years ago.

Thus started my #RamenPhase that’s showing no signs of fading away.

Before the enhanced community quarantine, I was lucky enough to take my fam out to dinner one Saturday night at the place where my love affair with ramen started: Hanamaruken at The Grove along C5.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Hanamaruken is a ramen chain that originated from Osaka, Japan which was established in 1982 by Takaku Arakawa who belonged to a family of butchers. By drawing from its founder’s background in butchery, Hanamaruken became known for ramen dishes that feature choice cuts of meat and uniquely flavored broth.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Hanamaruken, The Grove

There, the fam enjoyed a meal that included:

Signature Happiness Ramen (Php445 half | Php580 whole). Arakawa’s ramen masterpiece features a combination of shoyu (soy) and tonkotsu (pork bone) broth topped with ginormous piece of tender slow-braised pork bone rib. This is still my benchmark when it comes to ramen.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Pot Belly Ramen (Php410). Another showcase for the tonkotsu and shoyu broth combo topped with roasted pork belly.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Spicy Tobanjan Ramen (Php320). Tonkotsu broth spiced by tobanjan paste. Hubby liked it so much that he ordered extra noodles (Php80) to savor more of the spicy broth.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Gyoza (Php240). My daughter #ExhibitA will not consider a visit to any Japanese resto complete without these Japanese potstickers.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

Ebi Tempura (Php580). Large prawns battered and deep-fried to a beautiful golden brown and served with umami-rich tempura sauce.

Hanamaruken, The Grove

I look forward to tasting this kind of happiness again and again.

Momshie, grab a takeout from Baliwag

One of the challenges we moms face during this period of enhanced community quarantine is planning the family’s menu.

Stocking up on food items, hunting for that missing but all-important ingredient, adding twists on old recipes so that the little ones won’t get tired of eating the same viands week after week, tracking which refrigerated item is nearing its expiration date… All these can be quite overwhelming, huh?

So momshie, just this once, give yourself a break: order takeout from your nearby Baliwag Lechon Manok ATBP stand. (And chances are, wherever you are in the metro, there’s a Baliwag outlet near you.)

Have a Sweet #MomentOfSerenitea

Serenity is that feeling of peace and calmness from having an untroubled mind.

And soothing one’s thirst would go a long way towards soothing the mind.

Tea has long been touted as a way to relieve stress. For centuries, people have been drinking tea as an aid to meditation or to help achieve a peaceful state.

It’s no wonder then that tea brand Serenitea has made the achievement of inner peace its central concept. Established in the country in 2008, it helped usher in tea drinking amongst a coffee-drinking populace by brewing teas using an espresso machine and customizing drinks according to sweetness levels and by adding sinkers.

Serenitea, Greenhills

It recently launched its a new line of drinks – the Brown Sugar Series – which adds the luscious sweetness of brown sugar to its tea drinks. The Brown Sugar Frost (Php180), in particular, combined chewy pearls drenched in brown sugar syrup mixed with a rich and creamy premium farm-fresh milk topped with Serenitea’s Signature Cheese Frost and sprinkled with muscovado sugar.

Serenitea, Greenhills

It’s a truly indulgent treat that can chase your troubles away.

To bring you that moment of Zen that only Serenitea can give during these stressful times, Serenitea opened two of its branches – Congressional Town Center and The Exchange Regency Ortigas – for takeout and delivery via LalaFood.

Hassan Kababs & Steaks, Katipunan

Have a sudden and irresistible craving for Mediterranean food at an inconvenient time?

There’s no need to wait for the conventional mealtimes to have your taste of strong and fresh flavors of Mediterranean cuisine because Hassan Kababs & Steaks along Katipunan Avenue is open 24/7.

We went here during a night out with the extended family as this restaurant is highly recommended by my bro who found the food served quite delicious yet affordable.

Among the highlights of our meal are:

10″ Keema Pie (Php200). Flavorful bits of grilled ground beef and minced onions doused with strewn across a layer of melted cheese on top of a crisp pita bread crust. I think I can eat several of this all by myself.

Hassan Kabab and Steaks, Katipunan

Hassan’s flavors are bold and fuss-free. While the presentation of the food and the place may not be Instagrammabale, the resto is well worth a visit.

Personally, I’m just glad to discover there’s a place to go for my late-night kabab cravings.

Playful takes on Japanese cuisine at Soru Izakaya, Tomas Morato

The enjoyment of food need not be a sombre affair.

This is quite apparent when dining at Soru Izakaya, the Japanese restaurant hidden in Quezon City’s Tomas Morato suburbs.

Soru Izakaya, Tomas Morato

An izakaya is the Japanese version of the gastropub, a place where office workers can hang out after hours to have some drinks and a light meal.

At Soru Izakaya, fun permeates everything. The colorful interiors, for instance, are inspired by the aesthetic of bishoujo manga, traditional Japanese art as well as the bustling Tokyo nightlife.

The food, on the other hand, is no less playful. Together with fellow Zomato bloggers and foodies, I checked out Soru Izakaya’s unique takes on Japanese food which include:

A new Korean food haunt – Yoo’s Korean BBQ, Ortigas

For some time now, I’ve been singing the praises of one of my first and favorite Korean BBQ joints in the metro: Jang Ga Nae along Escriva Drive in Ortigas Center.

That was where I had my first real taste of Korean food like samgyeopsal, woosamgyup, bibimbap and tteokbokki. Whenever the fam had a craving for Korean food, Jang Ga Nae was on top of the list.

Imagine my family’s dismay late last year when we went there, eager for our Korean food fest, and then discovered that it was closed and the place was being renovated.

Well, months later, we got to meet its successor: Yoo’s Korean BBQ, which now occupies the space vacated by Jang Ga Nae.

Yoo’s Korean BBQ
Yoo’s Korean BBQ

It also offers many of our faves from Jang Ga Nae (apparently, it’s Jang Ga Nae under a different name… and maybe under new management?)

Whatever the reason for the change of name, we’re just glad we are still able to enjoy the Korean BBQ fare we love.

It has an unli offer which includes refillable servings of Bacon Pork Belly, Sliced Pork Belly, Chicken Fillet, Beef Shortplate and Beef Bulgogi for just Php445 per person, refillable banyan (side dishes included).

We also ordered our go-to Korean dishes such as Dolsot Bibimbap (mixed rice and veggies in a stone pot – Php350) and Jeukbokeum (spicy pan-fried pork – Php350).

After our very satisfying meal, we went to Yoo’s Korean Grocery next door and got ourselves some Korean ice cream. Yum!

With the metro under the Enhanced Community Quarantine, we were worried that our family’s enjoyment of Korean BBQ would be curtailed.

Thankfully, Yoo’s Korean Grocery offers pre-packed frozen meats and other items for pickup or delivery. The other day, Hubby and I got a 500g of Beef Bulgogi, a kilo of Fishcakes and a bag of Korean rice which we incorporated into our Samgyupsal-at-Home last night. We grilled the Beef Bulgogi along with some Bacon-Cut Pork Belly from the supermarket, while my daughter #ExhibitA whipped up some Gimbap (Korean sushi rolls) using the Korean rice and some Deokbokki (Spicy Fishcakes and Ricecakes).

Lunch break adventure at Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

Before the enhanced community quarantine, when the foremost non-work concern on my mind was where to venture of to lunch with my officemates, we decided on trying out the newly opened branch of Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken along Tomas Morato.

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato
Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato
Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

Peri-peri, also known as bird’s eye chili, is a type of chili grown in Southeastern Africa whose cultivation and culinary use was spread by the Portuguese to their colonial territories.

Today, it has defined a special way of preparing grilled chicken.

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken brings about its famed dish by marinating a whole chicken overnight in a special mixture of peri-peri chili, herbs and spices, then charcoal-grilling it to a gloriously golden hue.

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

This flavorful and juicy grilled chicken is best enjoyed with one or a combination of the restaurant’s eight signature sauces representing various gastronomic destinations, ranging from mildly sweet (Cajun Remoulade, Hoisin Sesame and Sweet Soy), medium spiciness (Garlic Brew, Spiced Vinegar and Mesquite BBQ) and hot (Chili Peppa and Harissa Exotica).

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

Our group decided on a Chicken Group Meal (Php799) which consisted of a whole Peri-Peri Chicken, four cups of Java Rice and four side dishes (we chose two mashed potatoes, a mac ‘n cheese and a coleslaw).

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

One of us was worried that the group meal won’t be enough for the whole group so he ordered a plate of Patatas Bravas (Php100).

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

As we finished our meal, our server gave us a taste of Peri Natas (Php140/box of four | Php199/box of six | Php360 box of 12). These are small egg custard tartlets that are popular in Portuguese colonies (I had my first taste of these in Macau).

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Tomas Morato

What an adventurous yet filling meal for our group!
